The AI never uses its fighters in-system. It always attacks with a carrier. The AI could do some serious damage if it launched and used fighters from its carriers and bases strategically.

I have strongly suggested this to Aaron a while back, but he didn't add it in the Last two patches. I hope he adds this to the AI in the next patch.
E-mail him and push for it.

I emailed him a week or so ago suggesting that you be able to split up fighters and satellites and put them into fleets so they have a formation of sorts. (Suggested a 'ring' formation for satellites and bases).
Got a response saying he liked the idea, so I hope that means it'll show up in a future patch.
(It was either that or the suggestion that the AI periodically jettison old weapon platforms and build new ones using the latest tech. I hate running into homeworlds with DUC I's and CSM I's defending them.)

"What do -you- want?" "I'd like to live -just- long enough to be there when they cut off your head and stick it on a pike as a warning to the next ten generations that some favors come with too high a price. I would look up into your lifeless eyes and wave like this..." *waggle* "...can you and your associates arrange that for me, Mr. Morden?"

It would be nice if they taught the AI how to properly use troops too, and to attack with fleets.
