I have a ship with a heavy mount PPB V and it has a range of 6. An enemy space station has the same weapon and mount, but it has a range of 10. What is going on?

space stations have access to bigger mounts for their weapons than ships. Also does a crapload more damage... be carefull when attacking em

and a hint I learned the hard way when designing em... include multi-tracking components if you have em - when I 1st built one I, for some reason, thought they'd be like WPs and be able to target multiple targets - wrong - they are ships. verrrry upsetting at the time - dohhh

Also, I think Bases and WP get a built in range bonus on certain weapons. They will definately outrange you in almost any even tech situation.

Base mounts provide range bonuses as well as damage bonuses; Weapon Platforms, fortunately or unfortunately, do NOT receive range bonuses in the "standard" game. You can, of course, modify any or all of the mounts by editing "CompEnhancement.txt".

I had never noticed this.

I looked up this stuff in se4\data\CompEnhancements.txt. It looks like the range/to hit bonus is just for bases.

Large Base Mount adds 2 range and gets a 40% to hit bonus
Heavy Base Mount adds 4 range and gets a 60% to hit bonus
Massive Base Mount adds 6 range and gets an 80% to hit bonus

The base mount mods were added to prevent the missile dance being done on them and to simulate the fact that you can put a much bigger weapon on a base than you can on a ship.

It's odd that they did not increase the range of a WP. You can put an even bigger weapon on the planet than on a base.

Nah, I think it's just an oversight. Hundreds of thousands of lines of code in the main program, a megabyte or more of basic game data for things like basic planets and sectors and ships, and 20 AIs X a dozen files or so. It's adds up to a mass of detail that no single mind can fully comprehend at once, I suspect.

I've modified my own Compenhancement.txt to give WPs the save mount advantages as bases, but with even better size/power ratio since WPs only go to 600kt. It helps quite a bit for AI planetary defense. If I can get the AI to put a lot of satellites with PDC over important planets with lots of WPs on them, it may reach the point where you can't take them out without major losses.
