I'm playing a single player, simultaneous, game. I had some fighters with warheads as their only weapon but in combat they went rught up next to the planet and just sat there and let the planets defenses destroy them all. I had the strategy set for kamikaze.

I tried that once too. I think it's a bug. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/frown.gif

Check out your options settings for the Kamikaze strategy. You will probably find a couple settings contradicting each other if you look closely enough. (Though you would probably have to have a good familiarity with strategy tweaking to catch it. Ask Alneyan; he probably has the mathematical equation that explains it http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/wink.gif)

Last time I checked, my ships were unable to ram enemy planets, so I guess the same goes for fighters (I am pretty sure it was under 1.91).
Turin, I am the worst tactician in the world of SEIV, and couldn't come up with a working ship tactics if my live depended on it (I use the tactics Primitive recommended to me, and it seems to be working fine... most of the time... when the enemy is outnumbered... and outgunned).

Create a new strategy and set the primary movement strategy to "Ram". Then, go to Target Priorities and set the primary targeting priority to "Planets". Then, select only planets as possible targets in the list below. That might work.

Hmmm, let me write this one down http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/happy.gif. Thanks Ultima, now to see if it'll work.

Argh http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/mad.gif, didn't work. They immediatley went after the lone ship present, even though I set the only target as planets, and then retreated to the edge of the map, completely ignoring the planet! http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/mad.gif http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/firedevil.gif
Almost positive it's a bug. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/Sick.gif
Well that strategy is out the window. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/rolleyes.gif So much for researching fighters.

Can rams target planets? Can you even do it in Tactical? Try that before trying to change the simultaneous settings. It should also say "planets" as a possible targer for the warhead weapon. I don't have SEIV up so I can't check here.

You can do so in tactical, and you don't *need* a warhead to ram: an unarmed ship can ram just fine. Still, warheads can target anything except seekers.

Alneyan is correct. The reason I was trying to do it in a simultaneous game is I am going to be playing in a PBW game here at some point in time, and I'm trying to refine my tactics.

Alneyan is *always* correct. Inflated egos aside, I am not sure you really want to make your units ram: they will ram right to the bitter end, so you can lose a lot quickly... though it's not that much a problem if you only use small fighter stacks (a ram against a planet does not stop until the colony has been destroyed).
Of course, since the strategical AI will never try to ram planets, that point is moot.

You want to use fighters to ram planets? You'd better (didn't think of that earlier) stick a few Cluster Bombs on 'em, then you can actually use the same fighters in more than one battle! http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/tongue.gif
No, but really, I mean it. Try it out with Cluster Bombs and see if that'll work.
And that's only using fighters. If you were to take a Baseship (assuming you're playing stock), you could stick an entire battery of Planetary Napalm Bombs on it and glass a small to medium sized colony in a single volley.

Ya, cluster bomb fighters work quite well.

Thing is, I'm playing as pirates and don't really have the research base to get cluster bombs yet. I was using ship warheads in lue of rocket pods since I tried the pods and after one shot I lost the fighters anyway, so I figured I'd just have them ram the planet and get a little more dam out of them.
