View Full Version : Space Food Empires - PBW Test Games
Captain Kwok
June 29th, 2005, 12:14 PM
Greetings!
I'm looking for players to test the next version of the Space Food Empires mod when it comes out so I'll be setting up two pbw games with 5 players in a small galaxy and 48hr auto turns.
The restriction for the games will be that you'll have to use one of the default empire files as I need to make sure they are decently balanced.
The objectives of the games are to address play-balance issues and fix bugs plus have some fun.
The games are listed as Space Food Empires 001 and 002.
Please e-mail or post your pbw user name and the race you'd like to play and I will add you to the appropriate game when I set them up. I'm hoping to start the game within two weeks, when the next version of the mod is out. Note there is a copy of this thread at SE.net: http://www.spaceempires.net/home/modules.php?name=Forums&file=viewtopic&p=4710#4710
To view more details about your prospective empire choice, visit the Space Food Empires site. The empire and technology pages are up to date, and the ship pages will have current details by the end of Thursday June 30th.

The version to be used will be 0.20 when it's released. I have a number of days off starting tomorrow so I'm aiming to finish it off by the end of the weekend. It's significantly different from the current 0.11 available at the website so it probably won't be much help to download that one.

I went with two games because I need all 10 races tested and a single 10-player game would move much slower than two games of 5 players. And yes I think I will get enough players for both. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/tongue.gif

Tesco,
I've assigned you to the Vegetable Dominion in game 1 and the Broccoli Collective in game 2. Both races are generally evil. As mentioned previously, all empire files will be distributed by me! Mo ha ha!
You guys can also check out the website to sneak a peek at what's in the mod or learn more about the race you'll be using, as all of the pages are now fully up-to-date to version 0.20 with the exception of the Vegetable Dominion ship page - which I'll be finishing off later today as I finalize their ship details. Ok, there's a little minor updating of new racial traits on the empire pages themselves too. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/tongue.gif
Speaking of ver 0.20, it's almost done and since the games are more or less filled up - it looks like next weekend (i.e. Saturday) we can start.

If you check the first post in the thread you can see for yourself if someone has signed up for the Corn, which they haven't yet. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/tongue.gif
The next version isn't quite ready yet so as long as somebody signs up by Saturday there shouldn't be any problem.
I think I will make both games 1 planet starts at medium tech and low research cost.

Greetings.
Just a little bump to advertise the last available position in game 2 for the Corn Confederacy.
On a side note I loaded version 0.20 for the first time with no errors, so I'll be tweaking things for a couple more days and making sure that no serious bugs have squirted through.

Sir Fyron has yielded to my badgering and will suit up in the final slot as the Corn Confederacy. I still have to work out a few minor issues with the next version that will be used in the game.
I'll be posting the games for you to join tomorrow on PBW. I'll be sure to post here to let you know.

Greetings!
I've been testing the mod version we'll be using and it looks pretty good. I've already caught a number of little bugs and will spend the next couple of days putting the final touches on it. You can check out what your empire configuration will be at the website (http://sfe.captainkwok.net/home.php) as I've posted those details already. They're in the empires section.
It looks like we're still on schedule to start this saturday. At that time I'll compose a lengthy e-mail with a few tips and requests for the testing.
Thanks!

No. It'll be a download from my site likely tomorrow. It's about a 8Mb zip/rar these days.

You can find the version we'll be using for the game here:
http://sfe.captainkwok.net/downloads.php
All you have to do is just upload the the default 2000 point empire file for the race you'll be using to pbw. I'll have the mod posted on pbw shortly and we'll be up and running.

I took a look at the mod, why are the colony modules 3500kt?
Did you make them that large on purpose?
Captain Kwok
July 18th, 2005, 11:56 AM
Check the component description, it tells you that the module requires the use of the colony mount to be sized to a colony ship hull. This is to restrict the use of colony modules to colony ships only.

Ed Kolis
July 18th, 2005, 07:56 PM
Just take the default empire file for your race, assign a password, save it as something else, and upload it.
Captain Kwok
July 19th, 2005, 02:50 AM
For some odd reason I couldn't download the empire files from pbw (graphic or text) so I just added the default ones I had. Please be sure to password protect your file on the first turn if you wish to do so.
Anyway the game has started! Check your pbw e-mails as I will send out some brief instructions.
Thanks!

July 19th, 2005, 03:42 AM
Oops.
One quick note - please do not use large mounts with weapons labelled as torpedoes - I forgot to restrict these mounts to direct fire beam weapons only. This will be corrected in the next patch.

Can you post comments and stuff in the SE.net forums? Perhaps I will get Fyron to create a subforum for the games.
From Ed's post at PBW.
Ed Kolis said:
We can't use heavy mounts on torpedoes but light mounts are OK? Not to mentino using mounts on FAT bombs...
There sure are a lot of component categories, which is rather confusing - how about lumping the weapons together at the end of the list like this: "Weapons - Pulse" instead of "Pulse Weapons"?
The design name lists are rather short...
The glucose pods say they need to be "repair" rather than "repaired" after each use...
Something weird is going on here... I added a Sensor Pod to my explorer hull, then added Combat Sensors, and the attack rating shot up 2% when I added the combat sensors... as if the ability only partially stacked! Did you perhaps use a negative minus-to-attack ability for part of the Combat Sensors' ability instead of a positive plus-to-attack ability for the whole thing?
The Nectar Extractors have the same pic as teh Protein Harvesters, not as the Carb Collectors as I'd expect...
Why can reactors and auxiliary control be placed on bases?
Light mounts are fine. The main reason I am restricting large mounts on torpedoes because they are heavy damage weapons already and the 2x damage mount is too unbalancing against small ships. Bombs are fine because they only target planets.
I will rename the weapon groups with the weapon prefix like I did in the tech area file. Thanks for pointing that out.
The design name files are WIPs. Some of them are much longer now (100-200 names), but weren't when I released it.
A lot of the images are just placeholder images for now. I will work on fixing those issues with similar or duplicates.
There is nothing wierd with the sensor pod. If you read the description it says it does not stack with combat sensors. What you are witnessing with the 2% difference is that the sensor pod has a 2% lower attack bonus since it is a combo component with long range scanners versus the dedicate combat sensors. When you have both on a design, it will the one with the highest value (combat sensors, +2% more) since they have the same family number.
I am toying with the idea of having bases joining fleets for supply - that and sometimes I forget to restrict these things to ships and drones. Speaking of drones I didn't add those in the last patch did I? Crap!

Beep Beep Tesco. Let's get those turns in!
Also, we should be updating to the next version (0.21) by the weekend. It's just a minor patch that fixes a few of the items you've guys picked up on and adds pollution/unhappiness factors to industrial facilities.
Captain Kwok
July 30th, 2005, 10:38 AM
PBW is currently down for an indefinite amount of time, hopefully it will be back on in a short rather than long while. In any case, we'll be moving to the next version (0.21) which I'm finalizing right now. The biggest addition in this patch is the industrial pollution and unhappiness. You can check out the general facilities page for a preview of that: http://sfe.captainkwok.net/tech/generalfacilities.php

Has the 'pollution' and happiness decrease ever been in a mod before...that is very cool...and very appropriate...I may consider borrowing this concept... http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/tongue.gif

I believe SJ came up with the concept and Fyron has since added them to the Adamant mod, and I suppose SJ's latest effort, Carrier Battles, probably has it too.
Fyron
July 31st, 2005, 01:17 PM
GritEcon didn't have pollution. It made facilities require workforce (organics) and power (radioactives) to operate by using negative point generation abilities, at fixed rates. Carrier Battles has the pollution though. Hmm... ModWorks could use a Pollution mod, and one based on the overworking = unhappiness model in Adamant.
Captain Kwok
August 1st, 2005, 01:19 PM
Please finish the current turn with version 0.20 of the mod and when PBW comes back online, I'll execute the turn with version 0.21!
You shouldn't have to worry all that much about pollution and unhappiness on your homeworld as I didn't modify the homeworld facilities at this time. However, you'll need to keep an eye on your colonies. Do note that troops can increase population happiness at the moment, but this might not be so in the future so you should be prepared to build happiness facilities.

Due to some RL issues, one of the players has had to opt out of the pbw test game Space Food Empires 002.
This means I'm looking for a replacement for the Carrot Imperium. Anyone interested?
Captain Kwok
August 4th, 2005, 09:06 PM
Bump.
I'm still looking for a hardy volunteer to take over the Carrot Imperium. It's still very early in the game (turn 5), so there wouldn't much time involved in switching over to your play style! Plus, a new update for the mod is ready to be applied that adds some neat stuff.
The game is listed on pbw as 'Space Food Empires 002'.
