When creating a new unit with an entirely new image, is it really necessary to create a new graphic for that unit in every single empire-images directory with the proper title and whatnot, or is there an easier way to do this?
Any help whatsoever would be appreciated.

What are you asking? If your changing the bmp graphic for one race you DO NOT have to change it for all races.
If you are adding a new troop entry to the the vehicle size files in the DATA folder then all you have to do is set the defualt image to an exsiting image say TroopLarge. Race files that do not have your new image will use the Large Troop image by defualt.

You can also add an image to the deafult race... I did that for P&N's battlemoons, so that any race without a picture for it got the image of that one Huge/Vaccuum world that looks vaguely like the deathstar.

Ah, Suicide Junky had the answer I was looking for.
Much thanks.

The main problem is that whatever image you use must look good beside even the oddest looking shipsets.
If you can use the alternate bitmap entry to point to the nearest stock image, you'll be guaranteed to get something matching the shipset at least.

This is thie kind of thing the neostandard was designed for. You'll find a lot of shipsets these days come with "spare" images for modders to use - for example fightermhuge, fightermassive, troophuge, troopinfantry. Those shipsets that lack the extra images can be directed to an alternative image, or they can use the generic ones.

Neo-standard ship set compatiblity list is way out of date though.
