I downloaded the latest patch Last night (1.31) and the much anticipated Map Editor appears to be part of the latest beta load http://www.shrapnelgames.com/ubb/images/icons/icon7.gif.
Thought everyone would like to know this...

Very good news, thank you Richard. Any idea when it will be released for the general public?

Probably won't be for a bit now as we like to release patches once we get a decent amount of fixes and such in.

Can we get a list of fixes in this coming patch?
I hope the AI will finally be able to launch fighters offensively and use them through out a system.

This is the first beta load since 1.30 so no new fixes yet, just the ME.
I will keep you up to date when new loads come out.

Richard,
It would be good if in the next patch some of the races that have been tweaked by various people (eg the mod pack crew) were used as the base files.
The current basic game files such as Research and DesignCreation are really quite weak compared to what the modders are bringing out. Also, I have found that many of the other files that have been produced(eg Construction_Facilities and Construction_Vehicles) significantly improve the AI's play.
This will save the modders the effort of having to check their files for compatability (and trying to guess what subtle changes have been made) and the Users of having to overwrite the files that come with the patch.
Just a thought http://www.shrapnelgames.com/ubb/images/icons/icon7.gif
PS: It would also be helpful to the AI if the four item research queue bug was fixed. Early on, whilst research points are short and there are lots of theoretical techs to research, the block that forces the AI to have four items in the research queue puts them at a significant disadvantage to a human opponent. Whilst we can research Physics say, and then immediately put Shields at the front of our queue the next turn, the AI is forced to research the three other techs currently in the queue (usually including expensive theoretical techs) before it is allowed to research Shields.

Again if this is a priority I would drop Aaron a line as he is the one working on the patches http://www.shrapnelgames.com/ubb/images/icons/icon7.gif.

Great news on the coming map editor. I have been foaming at the mouth to get an accuarate starting solar system for Sol to go with all those Earth centered shipsets (Terrans, EA, EDF, NASA). It's getting a little tiring restarting the game 15 times in a row hoping to luck into a system layout that looks close.

Lion of High Park,
I created a mod and placed in the mod forum a new quadrantTypes and Systemtype file to allow you to created maps with a system that looks somewhat like Sol. The sizes may be off a bit and there are a lot of planets in it (2 huge, 2 large, 2 med, 6 small, 13 tiny , 1 asteroid) There is a double tiny planet system on the edge of the system and a couple of atomsphere moons.
SEIV may place an additonal planet in the system when it starts if it thinks it needs a new starting planet however.
I also included a delta file with the 2 changes if someone just wants to add it to thier files.
I attached a save game to give you a example of what it could look like. Go to Bandersnatch and look at that system

A map editor will be very usefull. Just want to ask though, will we be able to add ringworlds/sphereworlds will this editor?? That and select starting points(systems) for the races, or even starting planets?? (ie start the AI out with a ringworld for a challenge??).

WARNING!! Ungrateful-sounding comment follows.
A Map Editor will be good. But a SaveGameFile Editor would be MUCH better. (Unless this Map Editor is misnamed, and actually lets you set up everything, entire scenarios -- ships, resources, tech levels, etc.)

What does the map editor allow you to do?
(A) Does it allow you to plot out galaxy maps, Groups of star locations and the warp points linking them?
(b)does it allow you to create individual system maps and assign them to these positions?
(C) Does it let you have empty star positions for the computer to fill in as it sees fit with random systems?

I hope I'm not giving it all away, but you can place systems, stars, planets (including sw's and rw's)

Actually, one feature I'd like to have on a map editor would be the ability to designate homeworlds for various races on the map and such. Hopefully, this will be in the map editor.
