View Full Version : Top 5 Games You Play
Atrocities
March 27th, 2001, 07:03 AM
1. SEIV
2. TRIBES
3. SOF
4. SimCity3000
5. BOTF
SEIV gets the top honors for many reasons. One, is the expandibility of the game. The mods and Aaron keep the good stuff coming. The challenge to be the ultimate lord over all that is known. (Yep, I am a power hungry ruthless dictator, hense the name Atrocities, is far more inticing than one would imagine)
Overall, this game has help my undivided attention since Nov 2000. I can not say enough about the hours I have spent playing it. Lets just say that if I got paid hourly to play it, I would be a very wealthy man.
I strongly suspect that even with the release of Tribes 2 later this week, SEIV will still be one of the games that I consistantly play. SEIV is a winner, and I am proud to be amoung those who play it.

It's hard for me to make it a top 5 ranking .. what I play depends too much on mood and other players .. some games are just not mp-able, other only playable that way http://www.shrapnelgames.com/ubb/images/icons/icon7.gif
SE4 (o.c.)
Stars! (MP/email only)
SteelPanthersWorldatWar (it's free)
MOO2
EF2000

BOTF (with my own mod)

In past years I would have had plenty of games scrambling for a top 5 but since I bought SE4 in December I have not played another game! My all time Favorites besides SE4 are
X-Com Apocolyspe (sp.?)
Alpha-Centuri
Panzer General
Fallout 2
Wizardry 1 (for apple II)
Jourin

1. SEIV
2. CTP1 with my own mod
3. Baldur's Gate I and II
4. Icewind Dale
5. SEIII
I tried BOTF and although it had a lot of potential, it had tooooo many bugs and design flaws and Micropose refused to support the game. Except for the graphics, I think SEIII is a better game so BOTF is no longer on my hard drive. Which is why I love SEIV!
Iron Giant

In no particular order --
SE4, Xconq, FO2.
SE4 we all know.
Xconq is a (primarily Unix, but also others now, methinks) VERY expandable open-source Strategic-Conquest-like game. Some of its expandability comes from what appears to be a Lisp-like (or perhaps it's full Lisp; I've not checked... but that would be overkill, methinks) interpreter built in.
FO2: damn fun RPG with a great sense of humor, and highly flexible character design.
Those are the only three I have which get a lot of playing time, aside from the occasional nostalgia game (_Neuromancer_, _Wasteland_, _Incunabula_ mostly).
Temptations (i.e. games not yet bought, but considered) that come to mind include CM:BO, TOAW:COW, and FO:T, but I really should be working on a thesis proposal instead... ;-)

Shame on you for saying such a thing. Apocalypse is one of the best (and most bugless) games out there and it certaintly have the Xcom feeling. TFTD however was just another copycat - Mythosgames had nothing to do with it (it used the same engine as UFO).
And don't even mention Interceptor (I really HATE microprose/hasbro - really, really hate them - right Richard?)
Mythos didn't cancel Dreamland Chronicles - they are just a little late.
Check it out at www.mythosgames.com (http://www.mythosgames.com) (sorry shrapnel).
I would really like to see a coproduction between Malfador and Mythos. They are both underground and great gamecreators.

se4
joust
imperialism 2
imperialism 1
grand theft auto 2
realize that part of that is because my monitor exploded and i am on a backup 14 incher that cant support many hi res games. I have been meaning to pickup thief2, system shock2, and deus-ex. I have B&W on preorder as well as a new monitor to play it on, so that one will soon top my list with hitman, which i have been waiting on a monitor to play. of course, after the initial fun of those games wears off, the list will probably be:
se4
joust
imperialism 2
imperialism 1
some other timekiller
Husky65
March 28th, 2001, 02:20 AM
1. SE IV
2. Rainbow Six Urban Operations

Heh... I don't really have too many games, but between my computer, my other computer, my friend's computers, the school's computers, and just about any other computer I manage to get within two feet of (not to mention any consoles), I can normally be found playing:
SEIV
SEIII
==Solitaire
==Freecell
==Minesweeper
==(gotta love the free windows games http://www.shrapnelgames.com/ubb/images/icons/icon7.gif
Conquer (think Risk, only not nearly as complex)
Tetris
Starcraft
Quake
Quake II
Quake III
Blood (quite bloody if you haven't played)
DukeNukem
Super Mario Brothers
Nibbles (AKA. "Snake", and many other things... depends who you ask)
Pong
Donkey Kong (the Atari one)
Q*Bert
Chessmaster
Utopia (Online)
Pinball (various Versions)
All the other games already mentioned in this thread and any games that will be mentioned after this post I would probably play if I had the opportunity. All of these are games that are even remotely electronic that I could think of in about two minute's time (which is why it's a bit unordered...). I didn't bother to try any other kind of game, because the list would just be too long http://www.shrapnelgames.com/ubb/images/icons/icon7.gif
I'll play just about anything. I'm easily amused...

Hey Windborne, could you fill us in on this game: (3) Deadlock:Planetary conquest
And yes Husky65, Deus Ex is an awsome game as well. MJ12 kicks arss. http://www.shrapnelgames.com/ubb/images/icons/icon7.gif

1- SEIV (duh...)
2- Hong Kong Mah Jong (9 dragons software)
3- Zangband
4- Alien Crossfire
5- ??? (too much time on SEIV)
Most of my truly perennial games are shareware: I have not a lot of luck with enjoying most 'pop' games. The other reason is I play my games mostly in hotel rooms while I travel, and I do not have a CD drive on my laptop...
Suicide Junkie
March 28th, 2001, 04:43 AM
Hmm. I'd have to say:
-SE4
-ST: Armada (not really stable, but fun with my realistic Borg mod & miscellaneous small fixes)
-AOE
-Gladiator (Cross between Gauntlet & FinalFantasy)
-Nick's SpaceWar (My own Really fancy Asteroids game)
Neat thing with writing your own game is that you can add all kinds of features:
eg:
- White "space background" toggle, so it looks like notepad work at first.
- Pause + Total invisibility for "x" seconds after emergency button is pressed (no taskbar, no tray icon - totally invisible & can't be restored until the time is up http://www.shrapnelgames.com/ubb/images/icons/icon7.gif)
- Automatically scales shield rendering detail to computer speed http://www.shrapnelgames.com/ubb/images/icons/icon7.gif

I only play 2 games:

I really enjoy SE IV, but I seldom have anytime to play it and when I do, I'm usually making my mod or shipset or website or something!
(See post "I never actually play")
Games I enjoy are SE IV, Sim City, NHL Hockey, Baseball Simulator 1.000...

March 30th, 2001, 06:43 PM
My top three games at the moment:
1. SPACE EMPIRES IV (although the ONLY way I have been playing it, of late, is hot seat -- can not wait until tcp/ip is implemented).
2. TOTAL ANNIHILATION: A great real time game that has never been equaled for gaming fun.
3. EUROPA UNIVERSALIS: Taking history from 1492 - 1792. And, the game CAN be played tcp/ip.

Fallout Tactics
Heart of Winter
SE IV (of course)
That's about it... although I track the AoW community since I enjoy making maps for it.
