SEOUL, South Korea -- A 28-year-old South Korean man died of exhaustion in an Internet cafe after playing computer games non-stop for 49 hours, South Korean police said Wednesday.

Lee, a resident in the southern city of Taegu who was identified only by his last name, collapsed Friday after having eaten minimally and not sleeping, refusing to leave his keyboard while he played the battle simulation game Starcraft.

Lee was quickly moved to a hospital but died after a few hours, due to what doctors are presuming was a heart attack, police said.

Lee had been fired from his job last month because he kept missing work to play computer games, police said.

Computer games are enormously popular in South Korea, home to professional gamers who earn big money through sponsorships and television stations devoted to broadcasting matches.

I prefer to crush good, not evil http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/evil.gif http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/wink.gif

Seriously, if someone is that addicted, they need some professional help. Like a good kick in the *** and be told to grow up.

It's really sad, someone dying because of that.

Someone was asking if Starcraft was good a few months ago. It's good enough to have someone die of exhaustion playing.

It's good enough to have someone die of exhaustion playing.

5 years after its release.

First, it's hard to say whether or not that report is trustworthy or not. Second, it is quite sad that someone would be so addicted to something that they would die because of it.

I know someone who lives in Korea, and he said that gaming is taken extremely serious there.

He said they have internet cafes on nearly every corner, and that they can play for $1.00 - $1.50 an hour.

There was also something not long ago about a couple leaving their infant alone to go play World of Warcraft. The child died from it. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/frown.gif

This is the bad side of the entertainment industry.

Not that I'm saying the companies are responcible; it's just that nothing happens in a vaccuum.

Ok, the vaccum part confused me http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/confused.gif, but I agree.

It's especially troubling since it envolves a video game, since most people in charge seem to have a negative veiw on them to begin with.

The recent GTA: San Andreas is a perfect example.

If anybody has happened to check out the Original "Hot Coffee" mod then you'd know that what it was was just a playable scene where fully clothed chars mimed a few sexual acts. Albeit that is a bit extreme, it was never intended to be seen. Besides the game was rated Mature anyways. Which means parents were already warned that the game wasn't meant for younger children.

What really pissed people off was the later versions of the mod, in which other people wrote new char skins into it to make the women nude. Rockstar had nothing to do with that.

I don't get it, though. I mean, go ahead and kill that girl, cut her up with your knife, shoot her with your shotgun, drive her down, beat her up, whatever, but don't have sex with her!

As said by someone whose forum nick is awfully close to "Rape"..... http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/tongue.gif j/k

StarCraft's corrent fanbase is situated largely in Korea, I think. I wouldn't be at all surprised if over 50% of all people globally who regularly play StarCraft are Korean.

I think it's that way with most of the B.net games.

The story is bull****. If it is true, then he died playing a seven year old game and must have had a heart condition to begin with. I have played many 48 hour game fest before and I know of at least six others in my PCP circle. Also there were the 500 or so people who attended the old TribesCon lan parties... most of them played for three days without sleep.

AT, please tell me PCP doesnt stand for what I think it does. :p

Easy way to find out someone go grab starcraft and play for 50 or so hours straight.

Population Control Police or something like that.

I think if we used SEIV as an example half the forum has proved that it is possible without any noticeable adverse side-effects. I know I have. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/wink.gif

Maybe this wasn't the first time he had done that - That week. And the week before - And so on.

Although now that AT has brought that up, the story is starting to look a little threadbare.

Yes, I've done so myself, but even then I bet you took brief breaks for food and drink, or at least had some with you at the computer. Most internet cafes I've been in won't let you have food at the computer in case of an accident.

Besides we don't really know what this guy was doing up to that point. Maybe he had just finished another playing spree somewhere else, and after being kicked out for being there way to long, went to the one he died at.

Another thing, I think the statistic is that the human body can only live 2 days with out water. I may be off on that, but I think that's right.

Colonel
August 12th, 2005, 02:32 PM
its 3 possibly 4 days without water but by the third day you start to become a vegitable not able to do much.

Ah, thanks for the clarification. Like I said though, we have no idea what this person did up till Then

I have done that too, played a game continuously for 48 hours without sleeping, on many occasions. Every so often I'd eat and drink while continuing to play! Ah, the good old days when I was still in school, used to do that a lot. It's more difficult to do that now because I have work and don't get much holidays, still I can sometimes go continuous 24 hours or so. And no, I didn't die either.
