(This may be a common practice, but what the heck, I think it's a cool idea)

I used to think that moons were kind of useless, there for flavoring, and to make remote mining better, but then it hit me. You could colonize them, build storage facilities, and fill them with Weapon Platforms.

Has anyone tried this?

That would be a kick in the pants!

You've prepared your invasion of Rukbat IV - an appartently easy target - and as you approach the target - BOOM! The fury of fire from Rukbat IV A rips your fleet apart.

AARGH.

Excellent Idea.

Of course, the fact that there were colonized would to noticiable on the solar system map, and on the tactical map.

and if the moons, as well as the plantets deployed satilites, you definitly get a layered defence.

Yup. I use that trick all the time. I always try and select a planet with one or more moons around it for my main military base in a given system, and load the moons up with defense platforms.

This works best if you use a race that breathes "none", so you can toss a Space Yard on each moon & pump out 1000's of missile defence sats, as well as having piles of Massive Mount WMGs on the moons.
And since you don't have to convert the moon's atmosphere, you can do this from turn 1 http://www.shrapnelgames.com/ubb/images/icons/icon7.gif

A very nice thing about moons is that if you colonize one in a system, the planet doesn't show up as colonized. Basically, you can see what is in the system without anyone knowing you are there. Well, they won't know you are there unless they click on planet. I had a heckuva time wiping out an enemy because he had colonized a moon. It took forever to finally find him.

I use moon exlusively for Intel bases. I colonize a moon, and then stick an Atomsphere Converter on it.

Once its converted, I take out the AC, and build nothing but intel related operations.

Or, I destroy the moon, and rebuild it. In many cases, it rebuilds with an atomsphere. http://www.shrapnelgames.com/ubb/images/icons/icon7.gif
