Well after a few months of not playing it since I got my new computer I decided to install and play Freelancer problem is the stupid thing does not recognize my video card (G-Force 5) and even the patch doesn't fix this.

Well the intro and all that runs fine but when it goes to load the main menu it crashes to desktop.

Can anyone help me out?

Well the first obvious thing to do is make sure your drivers are updated. If you drivers are updated and it still doesn't work try some third party drivers. I ran Freelancer fine on my 5200. Microsoft never patched the game so I can't suggest that.

A good place to ask for help is in the EFS forums. http://efs.proboards22.com/
Some of the best people I know online, all they do is play freelancer I am sure they can help you.

Well lame as it may sound my main fears are either downloading the wrong drivers or downloading bad 3rd party drivers.

I am redownloading the latest drivers from NVidia so I hope that helps. Oh and they did have a v1.1 patch http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/happy.gif

1.1 was server side fixes only so I don't really count it

Well I got the latest drivers and all that did was screw up my video so I had to do a system restore, and now I have the problem of it still not working http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/frown.gif

I don't know if this makes a difference but I have a Gforce FX5700 LE and I tried downloading the latest drivers from Nvidia but it screwed up my video.

Any ideas?

Update your DIRECT X driver from MICROSOFT. Should be 9c now I think.

I am running the latest Nvidia drivers (not that they have had any new drivers since 1777 or so) and seem to be ok with everything.

Freelance is a great game if you like flying around doing the same thing over and over and over and over and over and over again. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/happy.gif Get some of the community add-ons. Some of the ship packs are awsome.

LOL I played multi-player and tended to be the big evil Pirate http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/wink.gif

I tell you it's fun waiting for a clan cargo ship and it's escort and shutting down the lane on them then nailing both of them and snagging a few hundred gold to sell hehehe.

Ok here try these third party drivers:
http://www.driverheaven.net/~dhzer0point/

I am using these right now so I know they work.

Hi do I download all of those drivers or just some of them, I am not used to downloading 3rd party drivers so I'm not sure and I can't find any directions there.

ok here their server isn't working right so just get them here (http://downloads.guru3d.com/downloadget.php?id=1172&file=4&evp=8eb23966bae0f1c c619eaa361d16d5df)

Just hit I agree at the bottom and it will start downloading them. Then just install them like you would normal Nvidia drivers.

Get X2, or it's soon to come sequel, X3. It's made by http://www.egosoft.com and it so much more better than freelancer. It has about double the systems, vastly larger systems(in terms of interest), and more customizability. You can code scripts to change the game, such as add new ships.

Is that game even sold in the US? I've seen a dutch and english (UK) option but no US.

Okay how many dollars in a Euro? I know this probobly sounds stupid but I know it was 3.5 dollars for a Pound just dont know what the Euro went up to and I dont want to accidentally spend 60 dollars yah know http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/happy.gif

Well at least I was TOLD the british pound was 3.5 dollars I never actually found a way to check up on that

You want XE (http://www.xe.com/ucc/full.shtml) convert any currency into any other, 180 to play with.

I don't think its ever been $3.50 for a quid, or at least anytime recently. Try nearer $1.75, still I'd prefer you rate, makes every US import half price. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/wink.gif

Nothing will ever beat Freespace. TO bad they don't make games like that any more.... and make them multiplayer.

If only Freespace had been multiplayer.... ohhh boy the ride that would have been.

Freespace 2 seems to have multiplayer of some sort...

We could probably whip up scenarios based on famous SE4 battles, and fly around in them!

Yeah.
1) Switch to multiplayer mode when selecting your pilot.
2) On the main screen, go to options and set it up for a direct-connect TCP game.

I really wish that SF would have been more like Freespace, Freelance, and X2. That would have been so sweet.

You'd just spend your entire time in Ares or Erinyes, once you could afford them. That wouldn't be a bad thing, but they're all the more fun to fly for having spent so much time in Herc IIs.

FS2 had internet and LAN multiplayer. I know I played both of them, not sure if they're still going though. Well the LAN is of course.

Well AT that makes that game sound rather horrid I think I'd wait for X3 to come out and see reviews about that, although forging my own private empire and terrorizing entire systems has it's appeal http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/happy.gif

But I can do that with thousands of ships in SE4 http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/tongue.gif

Freelancer is so much more fun if you find a good mod. I have never had any major graphic problems so I can't help there.

What exactly is it that people like so much about Freespace? I played it for a time but it didn't seem like anything spectacular. I didn't think it was bad or anything but I didn't feel drawn by it either. Am I missing something? http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/confused.gif

Yeah a sense of taste http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/tongue.gif (lol ahahaha j/k)

Well Freespace 2 is much more compelling and manages to actually get an emotional reaction out of the player, I found myself more then once playing freespace 2 wanting to scream at the Damn shivans who blew my squadron out of the stars.

That and a lot of the missions in FS2 evoke a feeling of desperation (in a good way) where your sitting there going "Damn hold on one more minute just one more minute" while flak is exploding all around you and a major space battle is going on all around.

It's just a very visceral and excellently told story within the game.

Freespace had a strong story, compelling and movie quality about it. It made you feel like part of something. A cross between BSG/SW/Wing Commander/ and a real pilot all rolled up into one. It allowed for dynamic ship control, 360 3d space combat, and control over a squadran to you could send on missisions. I used mine to take on enemy ships hangers and I would go after the bombers to protect my ship.

It was just a load of kick *** fun to play.
