Hmmm Space Battleship Yamato....
You'll probably find more with that name. Ridiculous anime with over the top everything. And much use of character shields.

Hello, instead of dooing a poor explanation, I will give you a link for a very good website that will explain all that is Star Blazers.
http://www.desslok.com/yamato.htm
You have to see the TV show series. It was not a little kids show, great story, it was released 3 years before Star Wars. You can order them from various sites, you can even rent them at Blockbuster (online).

Hmmm from what I read Legend of the Galactic heroes is vastly better, though the 1 million ship Imperial Invasion fleet was a little "impressive" compared to 200 systems having only 200 million people, and yet a fleet of 1 million warships (not the Entire Reichsflotte either) has 100 million soldiers.
Anyway lol I've found a site describing "Starblazers" and it sounds like they totally f%6ked with the story of Yamato yet kept all of the "Yamato" footage. Including that in Yamato "main characters died" while in Starblazer's they replaced the manned tanks with "drones" and the main characters that were wounded "will recover" and yet are never seen again. lol
Not to mention that the japs thought we Yanks were too dumb to remember the Yamato and decided not to let the Americans include that scene. Although having the Americans salute the sinking Yamato would probobly have had a lot of americans laughing since most of the pilots Cheered the destruction of the Yamato heh. Anyway They also have "American Style' attack runs taking place on the Yamato in space.....hmmm someone's still a little bitter methinks http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/happy.gif
But anyway that's just from what i read I never saw it so for all I know those few web sites were just BSing http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/happy.gif
