Shadow ships are so dark that getting the white and black wavvy look of them has been difficult.

They look good, they just don't look menacing enough.
I dunno, maybe with a nebula background?

#2 looks fine to me.

2 is my favorite texture currently.

Looks good! http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/happy.gif Actually I like #1 better because it looks like the black color of the Shadow ships.

#2 definitely. The only problem I see is that the horizontal waves stick out more than the others. I'm not sure why. Is the texture stretched unevenly, or is it just a random chance thing?

I think its a doga thing. I can try and alter the texture a bit and see if I can get it too look better.

Didn't they have a redish texture to them? It's been a while since I saw them. They look awsome though. Can't wait to see the whole set.

I would choose #2 as well, AT.

My only nitpick about either is those little orange lights, ditch em if your going for authenticity. Then go for texture #1 http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/happy.gif

I say keep the lights. These images will be dark enough as is.

Here's an idea for making it more visible against a space backdrop... why not put some sort of glow or border enhancement on the image, so that it sort of looks like an outline of a ship? (That would be a cool effect for cloaked ships too, BTW... the ship with the little dotted circle around it used in SE4 is SO dorky http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/tongue.gif)

Neon ground effects for your pimped out battlecrab, eh? http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/cool.gif
This sounds like a great idea though. A faint background glow near the ship wouldn't blot out much of the actual background, but would make the ship visible against the starmap to improve gameplay.

I think what you need to do is use a metallic sheen on something that isn't quite black. There is a distinct 'gleam' about the surface of the shadow ships and I don't think a plain black can capture it. Maybe if you blend a very deep 'metallic' purple with black you can get the right look.
