View Full Version : More Aquatic races?

As I work my way through my races folder and the SotAS racedir to fill in the wiki shipset list (http://wiki.spaceempires.net/index.php/Shipsets_for_SEIV) I have been refamiliarising myself with many shipsets I hadn't even looked at in 2 or 3 years.

Anyway, it occurs to me that there really aren't many underwater races. You've got the Sergetti and the Fazrah stock races, and my KanesS are semi-aquatic, but i can't think of even one more aquatic race.

With in the region of 300 shipsets out there, I find it surprising that no-one thought to create another underwater race.

Anyone want to prove me wrong on this?

BTW, if anyone wants to help me with the race list, please do. I've been going for about a week and I've managed about 20-30 races (which some help from violist).

It takes quite a while to look up a race, convert and upload the race_portrait and flag images, decide which categores they fit in, look up working download and preview locations, then research their role in fanfic and put the whole thing into a prperly-linked Wiki page...

I think one of KevinArisa's shipsets features a race of aquatic space-faring dolphins - the Oxidran?

And the Space Sharks. Don't know if the people are aquatic or not.

We need more variety in general. A race of squids would be a good tribute to the Gazurtoids of Starflight. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/happy.gif Heck, since a fan contribution doesn't have to worry so much about copyright restriction, why can't we actually have the Gazurtoids?

And why don't we have any insect races other than 'mantis/ant' creatures? (Klackon clones, basically.) There are all sorts of other possibilities. What about a race of 'ticks' who live off some sort of huge animal hosts? (A variant on the Que-Cappa perhaps, but more interesting than 'ants'...) What about a race of 'grubs' that don't finish their life-cycle for decades, doing all their 'civilization' activities in immature form and then reproducing only at the very end of their lives?

What about the Memnorak? They are spiders. Not quite insects, but still different from ants. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/wink.gif

The Cluk-Ruk are also aquatic, both in stock and my expanded shipset.

Yep, the Oxidran are friendly little dolphins. You can see them here.

SOTAS needs to be updated. If you are making a complete list, make sure to check SE.net, NASY, and my site. Several recent shipsets are either finished or nearing completion that arent yet mentioned at SOTAS.

Ugly and scary.

The're probably complete pacifists who can't understand why everyone keeps running away/loosing their lunch.

IT is one of the Shadow ships that I am working on. I have recieved a couple of emails from folks asking to make them in other colors. This one was just one of the colors that I opted for in order to keep the creepy ugly look.

I have no desire to make "more" star trek sets. I just wanted to finish the set that I had started last year.

Thanks, I had checked SotAS and noticed their absence.
Yes, it is planned to be a complete list but no, it's not me that's making it: It's "us". Anyone can edit the wiki, add pages, altar articles etc, so if you see a shipset of yours that's not mentioned: Add it!

What about a race of 'ticks'...?

Will they declare war with the bone-chilling message of:

"SPOOOOOOOOON!!"

Lol! How do you mod a race to be "nigh-invulnerable" anyway?

Add high emissive armor ability to their ships? Then, Shard Cannons and NSPs become their weakness (as neither damage type triggers emissive armor ability).

I am amused someone started this post. I recently have had a desire to find a shipset based on the Samurai Fighting Fish (AKA the BETA fish). The male would make a wonderful model for a shipset, or creature that actually lives and swims in space. Since space is a plasma, this is a feasible idea. Anyone know of any such shipsets? I know that a couple exists in which the ship set is the actual race - they have no need for ships, but they are not derived from fish. Two other great fish to base sets on would be the sting ray and the Angel Fish. Another question - are there any "Farscape" based races/ shipsets out there, specifically the Leviathon?

Ummm... well, not feasible at all actually, but that totally doesn't matter. The shipset you describe would be beautiful, and plenty of shipsets rely on far shakier science than that =-)

THe closest I can ome up with is the cephalopea (sp?) set, a gorgeous set of space squids that I haven#t seen in a few years now.

None that I'm aware of, but if I come across any in my comprehensive shipset-wikiing crusade I'll be sure to post here.

One of Kevin Arisa's versions of the Manai kind of looks like 'space fish'.

I take it you are not into fish aquariums ...

Being female, artistic, an animal lover, and I really like fish, I kinda thought a fish based race/ shipset would be unique, visually appeasing (depending on the fish type of course. There are some really cool and mean looking deep sea fish that live so deep in the sea there is no light. Ship sets based on these creatures would be sure to evoke terror in other races), and kinda cool.

And as Atrocities pointed out, a fish race would open up new enterprising options. Just think of the possibilities ..... :}

Edited: I have a ttached a fish pic. Can't you see a cool ship based on this design? Would it not look scary coming at ya?

Oh there is certainly nothing wrong with the idea of having more aquatic races. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/happy.gif The nice thing about the game is that races are only limited by ones imagination. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/happy.gif
