A while back, someone asked Mephisto why his AI research files research troops weapons so much later after researching troops. He replied back that troops make your people happy.

In my current game, I designed a small troop with nothing but the troop cockpit. Each small troop costs just 120 resources to build. So, I can easily build 10 in just one turn on every planet, and that's what I've done. Now, all my planets are Jubilant.

How do they do if they are attacked.

Basically, they just provide more hitpoints & block weapons, so your militia survives longer!

I'd suggest adding some armor or a shield on your unarmed units. The price won't go up much, and you'll get them to survive a lot more damage. The combat will end in a stalemate, and next turn, any dead militia will be back, and can continue the fight against the enemy.

when I say a lot more, I mean, with a small shield III, Sixty-Five TIMES more damage http://www.shrapnelgames.com/ubb/images/icons/icon7.gif

Wow, I'll have to start using this trick http://www.shrapnelgames.com/ubb/images/icons/icon12.gif

Good point about the shielding. Of course, with my play style, if the AI gets past my ships, I pretty much write off the planet as I never build weapon platforms or satellites. http://www.shrapnelgames.com/ubb/images/icons/icon7.gif

Of course, with the AI's playstyle, the groung defence is pretty unimportant. Against a human who would be more likely to try capturing the planet, it will help.

Cool trick, I like to use troops so I would wind up and load the wrong ines and drop em so you can guess what will happen http://www.shrapnelgames.com/ubb/images/icons/icon9.gif

Hm, thats a nice idea - create l. troop with only armor and shields, and add some l. troops with weapons. L. troops get hit, small fire back.

Just look at the happiness types file.

Bloodthirsty & peaceful get +0.3 happiness per troop
Neutral races are not affected by troops.

Which Version of the happiness file is that. My Version of 1.30 shows .2 increase for all happiness types and 1.19 shows .1 increase for all happiness types.

If they take away troop happiness from neutrals there will be virtully no way to keep neutrals at happy or jubilant

I started this topic was because I thought it was interesting that 'empty' troops seemed to provide the same happiness benefit as fully loaded troops. (Once again, I gained that impression from reading Mephisto's comments.)

In fact, I would be willing to bet that you are better off building ten small troops rather than the same cost in fully decked out large troops. I'm betting the game assigns a certain happiness improvement on a per troop basis.
