View Full Version : I Angered Someone

Atrocities
December 14th, 2005, 03:11 AM
In the last day I have had over 360 email virus emailed directly to my Atrocities email account with AE.net.

Since that is specifically used for SEIV, I can only conclude that someone within the community is very angry with me. This is the first time this account has ever received an email virus, and to have 360 plus emails in one day is a bit excessive.

Update, 401 now. My email address for AE.net is no longer valid.

If I was *that angry at you, I'd tell you.

* To clarify, I'm not angry at you. Theoretical.

Maybe some Star Trek fan is trying to make the Canon Cannon a reality http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/tongue.gif.

No, this started today. I have not had any angery ST fans on my back for sometime. I think this might be retalation for my post about the Iraq War on SE.net. I am over 650 emails now. They are all the same, sober@@ or something.

lol Atro you always think everyone hates you, chances are your publicly displayed email got picked up by some hackers email address farming bot and you got put on the list of people he spams virus emails at. Some post at se.net would not cause this. No offense to you but theres alot better political targets to attack http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/laugh.gif

Well the final tally is just under 700 emails. I have just finished deleting them all and am sweeping my system again to be sure none got by.

I beefed up my spam blocker, both on my end and on the AE.net server so hopefully this kind of thing won't become a regular issue. Tomorrow will tell the tail.

to my knownledge, I have never displayed this email publically in any form that could be considered an email address. It has only been used for SEIV gaming purposes. But never the less, its out there now. And to get nearly 700 emails in one day, well that has to be some kind of record?

Wait, I did post it once, the day before yestarday, on the chat channel. I wonder if thats what triggered it?

On the subject of weird email experiences a while ago I recieved an email demanding to know what had happened to someone's trainer shipment.

Now a few years back me and a mate had set up a free forum just as joke, I forget the exact reason. So after we finished with it it was found by scam merchants who fill it with offers for all sorts of 'genuine legit phone/trainer/Xbox/etc'. So I changed the layout a bit and added a nice motto

"Dodgy trainers and mobiles available since quite recently.
Helping part fools from money since 1999."

And yet I still get the odd email from people who's stuff hasn't turned up or want some info on the stuff advertised. The message I take from this: some people are stupid. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/happy.gif

It could be that someone with that address cached on their system has a mailer bot. And is sending out seed mail to every address in their book.

700 emails from one infecty is unlikely. No this was some kind of fluke or an attack. Why me?

It would be within the normal range for a small address book.

Yeah, it's probably a spambot that infected someone else's computer. Not someone who hates you. If somebody hated you, you would get closer to 250,000 emails, not a measly 700.

The email spam filter, and the email filter seem to be working. I have gotten no further virus emails. If you email me and it does not get through, please let me know here. Thanks.

He didn't specify how long the strand was. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/wink.gif For all we know this particular strand is measured in kilometers.

Well, a RNA strand is more likely to be in the nanometres of length... http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/tongue.gif

http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/frown.gif I seem to have forgotten my biology. Well at least I was only off by a few orders of magnitude! http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/tongue.gif http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/cool.gif

A quick note about your SE email getting out - I did a search yesterday for my name (it is not a typical name and I wanted to see if it picked it up from my business website). I was surprised to the seach turn up my forum user profile! I guess I'm an idiot when it comes to the PC community - everyone else probably knows this - but I did not know that anyone could access the user profiles via search engines. LSNED.

Well, maybe he used a strand from a retrovirus. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/tongue.gif

But you have to go for DNA to get the loong ones. (IIRC the average human chromosome would be 9 *meters* long completely unwrapped..)

That's nothing. See what happened when we started discussing a worm a while back:
