And in the global mad science league Taiwan shoots to the head of the field, leaping ahead of recently deposed South Korea, with this stunning breakthrough:

Its only a matter of time now before they bite someone, and launch the superhero age.

Followed by the superhero lawsuit age, as people complain about the bruises caused when a superhero stops a train before it reaches the break in the tracks and becomes a real wreck. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/tongue.gif

Which is why superheroes need to carry both a license to kill and to save.

Those green pigs look like they've been poisoned... oops, I guess I'm playing too much RPG's where you turn green when poisoned.

Of all the genetic things you could do to an animal why make it glow green in the dark?

That was explained in the article.
A genetic marker which makes stuff glow means you can see where stuff is going and what it is doing in a nondestructive way.
In actual use, you would only apply the marker to the specific thing you want to keep track of.

They want to take stem cells from the glowing pigs, and implant them into another pig, to be able to observe how they grow without needing to turn it into ham and bacon. They're banking that a better understanding of how stem cells work in pigs will lead to a better understanding of how they would work in humans. And since stem cells are the biggest buzz word in medical tech right now, if you understand them better, people will pay you lots of money to figure out actual practical uses for the things.

Stem cells could be great. Well actually they are great, when you start life(ish) as a bundle of cells, they're the cells you consist of. Cells that can grow into anything are of course very usefull. Need a new leg? Grow/clone some new stem cells from yourself and use them to grow a new, genetically identical, leg.
The problem, as it always is, is making that actually happen. You don't need to figure out the practical use of stem cells, we know what we want to use them for, we just can't do it. Hence the research.
But still, glowing pigs! Do you need a reason to meddle with nature when the results are this good? http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/laugh.gif

Oh, sure, you say that now; but what happens when these pigs grow thirty times their normal size and start eating your children???

Wow, two medals in one thread, either I'm onto something or I've been hanging around some genetically mutated projects too long. Now if you'll excuse me, I need to go find my glowing mice...........

Have any of you seen those "neon" fish in pet stores? Pretty freaky if you've a lot of them in one tank... but not as wierd as glowing pigs.

Glowing Pigs? Hookem up to the Hyperspace drive from Atrocities other post and we could start some interstellar psychological warfare. You give us anal probes? we give you glowing hyperspace swine!
