Each month at john-howe.com (professional illustrator, concept designer on LOTR) there is a themed fan-art competition. The top-five-rated images out of all submissions voted on get a permanent place in the website. Each month has a different theme, and January's was "On Wings Of Angels." I submitted a small pencil drawing of the Archangel Gabriel... and it actually ended up in the top 5 out of 58 submissions.

Thought I'd share my befuddled pleasure with my friends here.

Very good. I like the language around the border. Always picture Archangels as being more buff and with weapons and armour. Then again I'm currently playing a game with those kind of angles. Keep up the good work.

I like the way the wing comes out of the frame at the bottom. It kind of brings the picture to life.

Tengwar is the official name of Tolkien's "elvish" writing system. It was used to write Quenya (High-Elven) and Sindarin (Wood Elves).
So yeah... it looks elvish... lol

Tengwar *is* elvish. Or rather, one of the scripts used to write elvish. Tolkein devised it to work with his elvish languages Quenya and Sindarin, and I think the version he used in all the published Lord of the Rings works was the version "developed" by Feanor (put two dots above the e, I forgot the code for it). His earlier drafts he attributed to... some other elf I don't remember. He also made rune-scripts for elvish and dwarvish languages. (/offtopic)

Nice drawing, too!

[/off topic] Yes, those are Fëanoran tengwar (alt0235 http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/wink.gif ). The earlier writing system was called Serati and developed by Rumíl of Valinor (Isle of Teleri?) and was a vertical writing system. Only snippets of it exist for writing examples. The other two scripts developed by Tolkien for use outside "elf-dom" were Angerth and Cirth, and were used by Dwarves and Eastern Men.

Your ships and names make more sense now. Not that it hasn't been staring me in the face the whole time.

I like it!
