I have an idea for a new racial tech area. This ability would allow a race to specialize in one tech field area like shields, armor, missiles ... etc. You would select the ability in the race design screen and at the same time select what field your race would specialize in. This ability would increase the damage, structure, shields and range by 25% and for missiles would increase the amount of damage they could take as well as increase their speed or if you specialized in say mineral extraction your minning facilities would mine 25% more. I would exclude the racial tech fields from being chosen for this ability, in fact I would make it so if you took this ability you couldnt select any of the other racial tech fields. Other possible benifits could be a 25% reduction in the cost of the items or in the amount of research it takes for each item. I think it would be a good idea to make this ability cost 2000 points.
What does everyone think?

I guess it's not implicitly a question of dislike, you can't implement this idea without hardcode changes because you need different component.txt files for each specialised race. Every idea which is related to hardcode changes should be (maybe, this is what I have learned from this forum) discussed later, when almost SEV is going to be ready for release... http://www.shrapnelgames.com/ubb/images/icons/icon12.gif

Just copy all the components in the file, and change the copies to require your new racial tech (level 1) and to require less maintenance / more range / more strength etc.

On a related topic, you could do something similar with Crystal tech races having double-strength components at extra mineral cost, organic tech races with components that cost all organics, low minerals. Something similar for radioactives (energy beings like the Eee?)

You can make that tech if you want, you just have to create all the components to go with it. It doesn't sound like a bad idea but it is a fair amount of work.
