Stumbled across it completely by accident. Actually looks pretty fun. Takes the concept of building your own species to a whole new level.

I found out about it the day it was announced (gamespys E3 coverage) I mentioned it here and I for one fully intend to try it out. Been awhile since it was announced and I didn't know it had a website yet. I don't think it comes out anytime soon.

I had a thought. Perhaps when it comes out we could have a sort of Space Empires alliance. If we could figure out how to evolve into Phong and Eee and other SE races we could work together.

Eee and Phong working together? Have you gone mad, man? http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/wink.gif Might as well ask Queen Whatshername from the Sergetti to befriend her human neighbors [/stockAI]

Upon further review, this is an extremely ambitious project. For some reason I can't explain, I don't feel too good about it. It seems overly ambitious from what I can read about it, and if someone's gonna bite off a chunk of software that big, I'd be willing to bet it's either gonna sit in beta forever or be buggy as hell upon first release.
That being said, I'm a pessimist, and I don't know a whole lot about the game creator...

Okay, from what I've heard, the game isn't multiplayer. You won't be able to directly affect anyone else. Your creatures and stuff is sent to an online server, where it is then downloaded and added to each person's own private sandbox. New building styles/creatures are uploaded on a daily basis or so.
So basically, it's not multiplayer. It just uses other people's content to fill in so that your computer doesn't have to do all of the work.

It uses content generated by other players not so that your computer doesn't have to do the work, but so that the game uses content from other players. Lots of user-generated content makes games several orders of magnitude better. Just look at SE4 mods if you don't believe me. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/wink.gif

Yeah, that's kinda what I said. Hmmmm.
Anyway, I look forward to being able to make my own alien races. And hopefully export them for use with SE4/SE5. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/laugh.gif

It's incredible. The way it generates textures, landscape, creatures, etc., opens up countless possbilities if taken in use in other games too.

http://www.theprodukkt.com/ pioneered the technology way before Spore. And it's probally a lot smaller, too.

One thing I'd like to know is, he is talking about making the program so that you only need a small amount of code to represent your creatures. Just how much of a system would you need to run it?
