Does anyone know of a program (emulator?) that allows you to use CD-images on your hard drive instead of inserting CD's everytime you want to play? When I decide to click on Combat Flight Simulator I don't want to dig through my discs... I wanna shoot down Gerries...

Thx,
T

you could search for a noCD patch. but I think mentioning where to get them is not very allowed on these forums so I cant help you more than that.

What sort of CD burning software do you possess? Some, such as Nero, come with virtual drive applications and the ability to write to images instead of just a disk. There are some freeware alternatives out there if you do not own a suitable CD burner.

If i understood what you want, what you are searching for is a program like "Daemon Tools".... google it... itīs a completely legit and legal program (even if it can be used for ilegal purposes)...

I use Nero6, and yes it writes images to a "virtual image drive" but does not offer a way to use the images. I just looked at Game Jackal, and it appears by their description that it would do what I want. It seems that I would have to use their image-writer though. (They call it "creating a profile"; I assume it's the same thing.) I was hoping to use Nero images, but I can't see anything that'll do that...

Thanks for the replies, sorry for the delay, I was at Wizard World all weekend.

Just curious, did you happen to get Nero as part of a bundle when you bought your pc, and have since replaced or upgraded your CD drive? I had exactly the same problem you are describing with my Nero install and it took be three days of reading online manuals and forum postings before I figured out this was my problem. The copy of NERO I had was a special OEM license that was only useable with the combination of MB and CD drive that I bought it with. Even uninstalling and reinstalling doesn't help. I can make images and virtual CD's, but it won't burn anything.

Game Jackel doesn't make CD images; it acts as a generic no-CD patch.

It does indeed come with one. I'll tell ya how to use it on IRC, since you are there.

Fyron: I already knew how to make images using "Image Recorder" and I've done it in the past to make multiple burns of discs. But try as I may, I can find nothing in Nero that lets me "mount" an image as Drive n: and spin it up.

On a related note, I found a GREAT FREEWARE PROGRAM (http://www.daemon-tools.cc/dtcc/download.php?mode=ViewCategory&catid=5) that seems to work flawlessly. I haven't checked into CPU/RAM-hogging or anything, but I was able to game freely in Combat Flight Sim and Freespace II.

You can use that Nero Imagedrive program we talked about. Its pretty easy: set up a drive with it, then either mount the image in the program or by right clicking on the drive in Explorer. I forget the exact mechanism Nero uses. You left before I could tell you that part. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/happy.gif
