I'd like it if someone could clarify how, if at all, the neural combat net works. I've read that it doesn't work. I've also read that it only works if the ship with the greater experience is older. Which is it?

IIRC, what needs to happen for the Neural Net to work is that All ships in combat that have a Neural Net component will (after combat) have equal experiance the same as the highest experianced ship with a Neural Net.

Did that make any sense?

No, it didn't.

So it's no use during its first battle, but after that the less experienced ships have as much experience as the highest equipped one during the battle.

As long as all ships in question have the Neural Net, yes.

The Neural Combat Net has no effect on defense at all. On offense, I think the last test results were that each ship with a NCN gets the highest experience of all ships in the battle that: are owned by the same player, have a NCN of their own, and have a lower ship ID. Ship ID is assigned in order of construction, with replacement. New ships get the lowest available ship ID on completion and never change ID.

... and the actual experience rating doesn't change - just the attack ability during combat, right?

So for example, if the most experienced (and oldest) NCN ship is destroyed, or if its NCN is damaged, then its effect on the other older NCN ships with stop, correct?

Whether it stops the instant the NCN is damaged, or if the NCN effect lingers until the end of the combat has not been tested AFAIK.
