I know that most aren't going to sift through a 200+ page book about the shifting of economics from Woolworth era Chicago to the global conglomerate WalMart.

Anyway, WalMart is the biggest employer in the US, after government on a local/state/national level. It also encourages practices to keep low-level employee turnover high (around 40% per year) to keep prices low, compared to a place like Costco (around 20%), which offers better benefits to its employees. Not dispicable, but worth examining.
