View Full Version : Custom Fleet Names?

It seemed when I started playing a mod (forget which) the fleet names came in a different order than the standard game. I've searched all the files, but can't find where this can be customized.

Was I just imagining the difference?

There is no mod capacity for altering fleet name behavior.

I don't believe that the name of a specific fleet actually has any bearing on how it's used or what it's purpose may be.

Didn't think it did.

I just hate when it starts getting into the" Alpha Alpha Beta Fleet" names. Be cool to have more than the limited greek alphabet. I generally rename them to "Attack Fleet 1" and such. =)

I wonder, is there a .txt file somewhere that the fleet names are defaulting from ? And if so, can it be changed ?

Doesn't matter unless you're lazy....

When you click the "Create Fleet" button, the text is even already highlighted for you.... just friggin type something...

I always give my fleets names to suit their purpose anyway, since the enemy can't see fleet names it makes it easier to keep track of them and know who's going where for what.

BK, that was the original question I started the thread with. =)

Why did you feel the need to get hostile?

I doubt that was his intent, it did not seem hostile to me. Probably just another case of plain text not conveying tone of voice.

That's what I do. I seldom ever use the " Alpha, Beta, Gamma... titles ( Never was into the whole Fratboy thing http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/tongue.gif ).

Generally I assign Fleet names either by task or by region.

No hostility was intended. My real life tone gets a bit vulgar at times depending on who I'm hangin' out with, and that should've just read: "When you click... the text is already highlighted so just type something."

Everyone knows that you can type your own fleet names. Why point out the obvious?

Okay, now you're just being pissy.

I think the fleet names are stored somewhere in your Empire file. Whenever I have saved my empire and used it again the fleet names start out where they were before the save. After a while they wrap and you have multiple spaces between the fleet letters.

I try not to use my keyboard much when playing and so almost always keep what names I am given. What I wouldn't give for an honest "Alpha Fleet" and not an "Alpha space space space space space Epsilon Gamma Fleet".

LOL

Now that you mention it, I recall seeing those spaces.

That's a definite wishlist item for se5: Specify a file from the designname folder (or whatever the equivalent in se5 will be) for fleets as well as one for ships.

Stupid Fleet Tricks

The best thing about fleet names to me is that no other player can see them. Your ship names are viewable to all so it isn't a good idea to name your minesweeper "Minesweeper v2.3". (save the name game for another thread). But you can safely name your fleets with names that help you manage without fear of another player using that to their advantage. I use a shorthand system for fleets that tells me from name alone what the function, composition, destination, and some other things like if it is now short on minesweeping or repair capability etc. I also change fleet names to update those things. You can also put single ships in fleets for this reason, in addition to giving it the fleet combat bonuses (in addition to the crew combat bonuses). I always create numerous 1-ship fleets at a fleet training planet so that as a minimum, I can give any new ship/fleet a fully trained fleet to "move into". You can even make a 1-ship fleet out of a mothballed ship at your training planets. The mothballed ship won't receive any crew training but the fleet will be trained up and ready for use at a moment's notice.

I've found that sometimes giving a fleet the name of the system where it was created or trained helps me to remember things like its history or experience level. I've named fleets 'retrofit fleet' at times when I wanted to send a large number of ships to a location with plenty of spaceyards for the job.
