Remote Mining

Remote Mining would fall under "Something Else," and yeah, me too; Shipyard/Repair at a planet or "waysystem" and remote mining at asteroid fields.

Yes, remote mining is a good use of starbases. Defense is a horrible use of bases because they are often horribly positioned. I wonder if adding combat movement to a base as an ability might help?

Bases are a very good way to boost the defenses of small planets where relatively few weapons platforms can be placed. If you are worried about positioning, try fighter bases. Just a huge cargo base with launch bays and a few minimal defenses, which is cheap, and the fighters can go where they need to be.

What bothers me about mining is that remote mining of asteroids is actually a very different technology from remote mining of planets but SE tech doesn't take note of the difference. For this reason I tend to completely ignore remote mining in SE.

Should space stations have little windows for people to use to view space or whatnot?

Remote Mining - Good
Planetary Defense - Bad
Warp Point Defense - Good (Those first-shot Massive Mount weapons from big bases do wonders to slow down the enemy.)

Mainly for shipyards, defense, and sphere world construction. Occasionally for storing units and population.

I voted for the first part of the poll and accidentally clicked OK before I voted for the question about windows, and now I can't go back and vote for the windows question.

didn't devnullmod have a base engine??

i'm still clueless about the windows question... how would that change game mechanics?

It wouldn't. I am just curious.

Base work for planet defense if you have enough (see: gritecon) or if they're on a warp point.

I like 'em full of fighters in a cloaking nebula, especially if its a shield depleteing nebula.

Windows? Kinda depends on the shipset style, but yeah, little glowing squares on the base do add ambviance, I 'spose.

I use bases for literally everything.

Planetary defense\Warp point Defenses- I use them all the time so I don't have to preoccupy my ships.

Remote mining- not as much but in every game I have atleast a couple around.

As for resupply- yes, all my bases act like that for me\

As for other things- Fighter bases, Drone Launchers, and then a few storage bases near my capital planets so I can have tons of supplies(ie: Fighters, drones, troops etc.) For my ships so I don't have to keep building them after the ships.

Bases are also good for population centers/cargo storage. If you have a planet that grows at 10% you can take the 10% per turn, of the population, and put them on the base. This way when you start colonizing you won't deplete your homeworld. This is especially true in the early game when your expanding like mad, AND all the benefits of the population will still be there. Giving these bases launch capacity is great for making them a defense base for fighters/drones. So many uses, so little time. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/happy.gif
