I know that SE4 used .bmp format because pretty much anyone has software that can edit them. However, they also take a RIDICULOUS amount of hard drive space. SEIV Gold + 4 mods (Proportions, Star Trek, B5, Star Wars Rebellion) eats up a hefty 1.34 GB.

So is there any word as to whether SE5 will be able to accept JPEG or GIF images? I'm sure that would cut the size of the game down considerably, by just converting any existing .bmp files to .jpg.

I hope it won't be able to accept GIF files... PNG or JPG, doable. But GIF? Think of the pixels!

SE:V has images in both .bmp and .jpg formats. Overall, it uses up more disk space because there are many more UI-type elements that can modded. As per Fyron's warning, I agree that say no to GIFs. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/tongue.gif

I should also point out that it is possible to make 8 bit PNG images that are smaller than GIF, and have the same colors.

I'd go for gifs if I could animate them but alas it wont be the case no matter how many times I suggest it

Animated gifs would indeed make a wonderful thing.

PNG can't be animated, it has two related formats MNG and APNG that can be animated but aren't widely supported.

Well unless the game shows the animations it doesn't do any of us a damn bit of good http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/frown.gif
