I saw boxes of Space Empires IV Deluxe tucked away on the bottom shelf of the strategy games section at J&R this weekend.

Well, here it is. Right next to Spartan: Total Warrior.

The box is pretty light. It doesn't feel like there's a very substantial manual in there. Details on the back are sparse. I'm not impressed with the packaging, but it's Space Empires in a retail store. That's something I never thought I'd see when I downloaded the shareware version of SEII all those years ago.

From the looks of it, I wouldn't call it real retail. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/frown.gif Nitche computer stores and back water garage stores is not Best Buy or Walmart. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/frown.gif I like to refer to it has Hidden Retail.

Ya, and you can buy all kinds "attachments" to simulate sexual intercourse on line. No one buys these sex toys, yet they had a billion in sales last year.
If SE IV had more sex in it, think of the sales it would have.

I bought the game at Game Stop a couple of months ago. You're right about the manual not being very substantial...there is not a manual at all; only the CD.
The packaging is not very impressive but I think they tried to avoid misleading new buyers as to the age of the game. I think this release was partly to prepare potential customers for Space Empires V. A customer might think,"Space Empires V?...oh yeah I remember seeing Space Empires IV a while back. This one looks alot better. I'll try it."

Wade's right, Space Empires IV has most likely reached about it's peak in sales by now and everything from here on in is to plant the brand name into brain-meats of unsuspecting folk with real lives and families.
And Atrocities.... uhm.... Why do you know so much about the playboy game and it's attachments? lol

I do block them, now. But only a year or so ago I was using IE and not FF.

J&R (http://www.jandr.com) isn't really what I'd call a niche store. At least not as small a niche as you're thinking of.

Looking at the image, it appears that Strategy First ships SE4 in either cases of 6 or 12. I'll lean towards 12 since they would want to move product faster - but looking at the image, I count only 11 copies of Space Empires IV left on the shelf.

I wonder if I formed my own internet store if I could get a dozen copies of SEIV Deluxe at cost... cost being $5.55 a game box.

Locally I spotted it at the Burreau en Gross store (Staples to the rest of Canada) Only 2 copies left on the shelf, so they might have actually sold a few.
When I get the chance I'll check out EB Games. Usually if one store has it the others do too.
