hello everybody ! Playing AT's STM 192.7.1 DE and having a great time of it until I hit maker 2426.8 . Tried to " creat a fleet " , hit icon and game and computer froze ! Restarted computer and game played different scenerios and everything worked fine until I tried to put a fleet together and same thing happened . Has anyone had this happen and if so how do I fix ? Thanks to anyone who can help - Alan

It is known that the fleet names run out after a while, but to my knowledge the game has never locked up like that due to fleets.

Most players don't even run out of names in a typical game...
Are you repeatedly creating and disbanding fleets for some reason?

Yes , I am in the process of putting small goups of ships together to guard warp points , protect some planets , do quick smash and bash attacks on neighboring systems and have small quick moblie forces in systems next to my enemies { and even my friends ! }

If you are just pushing small groups around, you can Shift-Click the ships. This lets you give the orders to all of them at once, without bothering with a fleet.

In a simultaneous game, the only thing you really need fleets for is to share supplies. And to manage 50-300 ship battlegroups http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/happy.gif

Some things to try:
- Wait another turn before making your fleet
- Reuse pre-existing fleets
- If you've got vast numbers of small fleets already, disband one first.
- Send the savegame (and a link to the mod) to Aaron.

My games also can lock up during fllet creation when there are too many fleets and you start with a high fleet name. I have found that if it starts to happen you can remove other unneeded fleets and then you can create some where needed.

I have not tested or troubleshoot the exact cause, but it has to do with number of fleets. Possibly also the starting fleet name and using a saved Empire file that had fleets created before it was saved.

The only workaround that I know of is saving before fleet creation when you know you are close to the limit or have had it lock up before in that game. Once locked I have never been able to get it to recover.

My freezing happen in Stock. But I also have fleets for grouping ships during training. All ships with the same percentage get put into the same fleet. With three training areas in a big game that is 20 fleets just sitting there.

Fleets are also good for the +20% or more experience they give.

Don't forget fleet training and experience! http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/smile.gif

I can vaguely remember that I had a similar problem with fleets quite a time ago. AFAIR I could not do anything with a certain fleet or the game would freeze. But that was only a problem with one specific fleet.

I wonder what the fleet number limit is? Perhaps Mrscrogg should count how many fleets he had when the game crashed...

To answer Captain Kwok's question - it was the 65th fleet grouping that froze the game

I guess 64 fleets at one time is the limit. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/tongue.gif

Its not. I just tested it and had 69 fleets without issue..

It could possibly be an issue with how the fleet names are generated. SEIV tries to create a name that is not already in use, and goes through part of the Greek alphabet to enumerate... I don't recall the exact progression, and am not near my SEIV computer at the moment, but it goes something like Alpha, Beta, Delta, Epsilon, Gamma, Kappa (alphabetical for us, but out-of-order for Greek http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/happy.gif ). Then it does Alpha Alpha, Alpha Beta, etc. I haven't seen it go beyond two greek letters, but have seen two greek letters with two spaces between instead of one. Could be that if you use default names, you run into problems when it tries to generate the next default with three letters, but only two end up being generated, and you have a duplicate. Crash (and burn).

I'll try to find last name of fleet grouping that I had before freezing

Could it be the total number of Fleets, Sat's and Unit groups? Maybe they all occupy array space and the combination of them all has a limit? http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/confused.gif

i had an issue with fleets in one game, i using the default names, they do run out, its been awile but ithink the number of fleets i had remaned unchanged or highr just started naming fleets (some fleets did have unique names before hang up).

I didn't rename in my test, and ended up with sillyness like:

Alpha Alpha Beta Fleet

Alpha (four spaces) Fleet

I often rename my fleets anyway, so that the names have some sort of meaning to me (or not). That takes care of the 'alpha alpha' sort of nonsense. I dispose of fleets that have outlived their purpose, and have never had this sort of issue.

When you save your Empire, it also saves something like the last used fleet name. When you start a new game and load in that empire, your fleet names no longer start out at "Alpha Fleet". I think my fleet names now start with "Alpha Bravo space space space Fleet". For the first fleet I make. :-( That is one reason I think it has this starting fleet also in the equation for when it locks up. Although I must admit that the number 64 sounds very suspicious. Even with Phoenix-D at 69 fleets. I think it might be a combo of several things.
