Hard to define the TOP 5 for me, so I won't try. Here's a list of my all-time Favorites in no particular order:
-Master of Orion II: mainly for the multiplayer ability -- though that community has pretty much died out now =(. I LOVED the flexibility of that game. The AI sucked, but the options available in multiplayer when customizing races (especially with some player-created mods)and the major differences in gameplay that various racial abilities gave is so far unequalled by any game I've ever seen except MoM (see below).
-Space Empires IV: mainly because I love rules-tinkering. The AI is frankly pitiful and doesn't provide much of a challenge with any mod that I've found or created. But I keep playing and tinkering, so I must like it =) I just keep hoping that a lot of the underlying problems will be fixed in future patches...or better yet, that Aaron will answer my long-ago email volunteering my time to help write code in the game =)
-Asheron's Call: though I got out of this game a year or so ago due to addiction factor destroying my life =)
-Master of Magic: If this game had multiplayer ability, I would STILL be playing it.
-Alpha Centauri: I still love this game, though the AI could still be better. The multiplayer works...but not very well. *sigh* Relegated to a PBEM game at this point.
-Stars! Eagerly awaiting the sequel
-Might & Magic series and Heroes of Might & Magic: crappy graphics, but I still love 'em . I hope 3DO weathers it's current crisis and makes more of this series.
-Planescape Torment: The engine was decent, but I have never in my life seen a better storyline for a CRPG. Wow. I just wish they'd make expansions for that game (though they might have to use a different character..heh)
-Civilization: the game that began an entire genre (well, Civ I did anyway) deserves a mention in my list of Favorites, even though I hardly ever play it any more (Alpha Centauri and Civ:Call To Power are much better IMO).
There's LOTS more games that I've played, but I'd have to say those are probably my Favorites. Some of them I even still play =)

henk brouwer: If you like Scorched Earth, check out Worms. That game just rocks http://www.shrapnelgames.com/ubb/images/icons/icon7.gif
For me:
MW series
SE series
Worms series (Armeggedon being the only one I've played, but the others- II and World Party- are similar)
Mechcommander
Fighter's Anthology- I *really* wanted to like USAF, but I could never get it running right, stick didn't want to work. Not only that, it had problems at low altitudes, and guess which plane I used. Yup, the A-10.
Freespace 2

Hmm. Showing my age here... These are nearly all Amiga games from 1995 or earlier. They are all still as good to play now as ever though.
Best 5 (in order)
1> SEIV. Obviously. Not for what it is (an absorbing and challenging game) but for what it might yet be (an all- consuming substitute for real life)
2>Bullfrog God sims, ie Powermonger / populous: For the attention to detail and "real world" atmosphere. And that heartbeat that set your own pulse racing... Boomboom... boomboom.. boomboomboomboom... boomboomboomboom...
3> Llamatron 2112: Old (1990? 1991?) Amiga freeware game. With non-stop action, surreal sound effects and hypnotic strobing graphics to make you eyes bleed, playing this at night after a few beers is like some kind of mind altering drugs experience. Very addictive, especially in 2 plyr mode.
4>Speedball II, brutal deluxe. Just for the sheer style and quality of it. The ultra violence and the (literally) palm- blistering gamplay help as well=-) Doesn't matter how many times I complete it I still want to play again.
5>Wipeout 2097, For the speed, the music and the cool. It was historically groundbreaking in terms of changing attitudes towards gaming.
Further down the list would be
> Alien Breed series: Really atmospheric games- just like being in one of the aliens films, but without violating any of the copyrights=-)
>Elite/Frontier (For years these were unsurpassed in terms of absorbing the player)
>Worms (For those 4 people crowded around one monitor moments),
>Datastorm (little known defender clone on the amiga. One of the fastest games I've ever played.)
> Columns (you know that Tetris meets connect 4 thing - just for chilling out with, excellent thumb candy)
>Duke Nukem 3D (nostalgic reasons)
>and ooh... loads of others.

oh yea, MOM was one of the best games ever made, i used to play it on the c64. there are some modern console games that are cheap knock offs with spiffy graphics but no comparison on the content.

My top 5
1) Bloodwitch (amiga), I think it was called. A rpg that you could play 2 players at one screen.
2) Ports of Call. You transported and sold cargo all over the world. Brilliant game. (amiga)
3) Diablo 1 & 2.
4) Space Empires 4.
5) Boulder dash (c64) A realy addictive game. One of the first computer games I played.
Games that didnīt make it to top 5:
Defender of the crown(c64),Eye of the beholder 1 & 2, command and conquer 1, civ, Homm 3 and imperialism 2(multiplayer only).
I have probably forgot to mention allot of good games.

Leoric - I remember Defender OT Crown on the Amiga... brilliant game. Glorious graphics (at the time, anyway.)
I didn't realise we were going all the way back to the C64... anyone remember these:
Hades Nebula - perfectly balanced scrolling shoot 'em up.
RimRunner (I think) Something about giant lizards and ant people. Remember it being very very good.
Alien (C64 Version) - The game of the film - So scary I was afraid to play it on my own. (I was only a kid http://www.shrapnelgames.com/ubb/images/icons/icon7.gif)

I canīt say that I have played that Version of ALIEN.
The reason why Iīm going back to C64 and AMIGA is that there were more dept in the games than it is now.
Now days they are going for grafics only. It is a waste of my time and money.
