From what I've read of SE5, one of the new improvements over SE4 is 3D graphics; on the main site the features list: True 3D solar system.
3D space combat.
3D ground combat.
However, from the screenshots it looks like it's just 3D planets on the same old 2D hex grid for the system map and 3D ships on a 2D plane for space and ground combat. What's the deal?

No deal, that's just what it is. Real time rendered 3d graphics on a 2d plane.

What was that??? Did I just hear someone say "wow I play in Strategic only mode"
The moment I saw StarFury I had nightmares of someone deciding to include this awesome feature in SEV

No, you didn't.
Each "turn" is simply one second of nice, fair, balanced simultaneous move & fire action, at which point you can take half an hour to change all your orders if you wish.
In practice, however, strategic is the only way to play a serious game, for Obvious Reasons. (http://imagemodserver.mine.nu/other/MM/SE4/Mods/CarrierBattles/Tudran2_02.jpg)

How many times this year has SJ referenced the Battle of Tudran - 10? 15? 100?

Yeah, well, it is still damn impressive.

Meh. It is nothing compared to some battles they had in Return to Hell (2?) where there were so many ships that there were a lot of overlaps with 2 ships starting in the same square. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/stupid.gif

No, you did not. However, I technically could have, since I only really play SE4 in PBW mode. AI is just not a very satisfying opponent, and it doesn't respond well to my carefully RPed messages. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/frown.gif
