Hi all, Ive been away from the game for over a year. Just wondering if the deluxe version is a worthwhile deal to download as its only $10. If so does anyone know if the download can be saved to a CD. Currently playing with Gold version. The announcment of V sparked my interest once again in the game.
Thanks all

If you already have a legit copy of SEIV Gold or classic you can upgrade to deluxe for free. Just download the patches and install.

Yep, you should be able to find the required patches there. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/cool.gif

Careful, or you might get some derision for not just waiting until SEV comes out..... http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/tongue.gif

Those people you should just ignore.
Stock sucks, but Se4 rules once you've got the latest mods.

I can confirm this works, wildcowboy. I just recently upgraded my SE4 Classic (i.e. pre-Gold) to the latest deluxe for free.
I did have a bit of weirdness with installing the patch. I wound up having to find my SE4 CD (that took some doing!), do a clean re-install, and then patch that.
I have to say I like it. There are a lot of nice little features added, and some old annoyances removed.
And I agree with Suicide that you should ignore the h8ers, although I cannot share his enthusiasm for mods, or his scorn for stock SE4 http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/happy.gif
So, let me know if you want a game, I'm rusty too http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/happy.gif

The same folks who keep saying "Don't bother anymore with SEIV, just switch over to SEV. It's all new and shiny !!!", both directly and indirectly...

Hmm, Wildcowboy hasn't been back for 2 days.
This tells us one of three things, either -
A) The upgrade went perfectly, and he's having too much fun to stop and come post here.
or
B) The upgrade was so hosed he gave up in disgust and went back to play World of Warcraft, disdaining to post further here.
or
C)The patch formatted his HD, and he's busy shrieking down the phoneline at Dell tech support, who are asking if he's checked to see that his computer is plugged in http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/wink.gif

I've seen plenty of posts to the effect of "SE4 will have much life in it left because it will take a while for SE5 to get a body of custom mods and such built up for it."

How about a Community Chaos Mod? Somebody makes an area list (Ships, troops, spying, etc.) and then makes it however they want. No consultation between contributors.
Might be fun to see what results, even if it doesn't get played much.

Here: have some chocolate covered derision http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/happy.gif At least its covered in chocolate!
I, for one, assumed that all the beta testers would have abandoned SEIV for the upgraded, new and improved, shiney, minty fresh experience that is SE5! The fact that the beta testers are saying that SEIV will not die soon, makes me very, very scared...
The only real "mod" I play is the balance mod (forget the name). Won't the base game keep me occupied long enough for the (assumed to be essential) balance mod to be created by my fellow gaming geeks?
I just thought that SEV would at least include the depth of SEIV out of the box. Now, I'm beginning to wonder....

Buy it at Gamestop and it will - you get a free copy of SE4 when you buy SE5 http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/wink.gif
Besides, Fyron's right - SE4 is a mature game, having 6 years worth of modding and strategic analysis under its belt. SE5 is new, potentially unbalanced, sparse in the mod department, etc. It's like choosing between Windows XP and Vista - do you go with the tried & true, or the "ooh, shiny"? http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/laugh.gif

First and foremost, my comment was intended as playful kidding http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/tongue.gif , but there HAS been quite a bit of commentary, across the various boards, to just bail on SEIV and immediately go with SEV.
I've seen quite a few comments discouraging any further development of new Shipsets or Mods for SEIV, nearly always with "Why not just wait for SEV, and do it then" attached.

Choosing between WinXP and Vista isn't choosing between "tried&true" and "ooh, shiney!", it's choosing between crap that has been left to dry and crap that's fresh from the pooper http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/tongue.gif

Never fear, after some tinkering and downloading of half a dozen different mods (Star Trek, great stuff) Ive been playing for all its worth. Now Ive got 12 days of leave Ive got to take before Oct. Hmmmmmmm!! Me thinks Ill need a shave and a haircut before I go back to work! Thanks for the help guys, Ive been been away from the game for some tiume trying new things but this is one I kinda drift back to everytime. As for SEV, Ive learned to wait a while on new games...got burnt real bad with MOO3 and Reach for the Stars.
Thanks all, Ill try to be more active, though the time for modding I fear is for not. I intend to try to learn anyway.

Neener neener! http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/tongue.gif
I didn't waste my money on either one http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/happy.gif
I took one look at the interview with the designer, where he talked about the changes to be expected in MOO3, and went, "Whoooey! that's sure going to suck unwashed monkey toes! No way am I wasting my money on that crap."
The corporate game industry of today is constitutionally incapable of re-creating any of the glories of the pre-corporate game world. Origins Systems is dead and gone. Nobody will ever make another Wing Commander Privateer. Sic transit gloria mundi.
But I do wonder what Steven and Grisel Barcia are doing these days http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/happy.gif
You want to hear one to make your spine crawl in horror? John Romero and Stevie Case are making mini-games for PDA's and cell phones. Lo, how the mighty have fallen http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/frown.gif

Steve Barcia was involved with Metroid Prime on the Gamecube... OK, that was a few years back, but much more recent than MOO2 http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/wink.gif

Ed, oh really? I suppose making console games is one step above doing games for PDA's and cellphones http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/wink.gif
I personally enjoyed MOM even more than MOO. I still play it sometimes http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/happy.gif

I wonder how long it will be until someone makes a MoM mod for Civ 4? There are working implementations of magic and spellcasting. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/laugh.gif

Someone needs to make a MoM mod for SEV.
Fyron
September 19th, 2006, 05:45 PM
Don't think that is really possible... unless you want to make "drones" into "spells." But even then, all you get are damaging spells (or summons).

I happened to go into a game store the other day, and lo and behold, they had SEIV Deluxe. Even though I have the original game and all of the latest patches, I went ahead and bought it. I was concerned, though, when it said that it was for W2000 and XP only, and that W98 and ME wouldn't be supported. Since those are the only 2 formats I've played the game on, should i be concerned? As soon as I get a working computer from this guy at work, I'll either have 98 or ME (depending on whether I can use my hard drive which had the ME on it). Also, what are the hardware requirements for SEV? I'm just hoping that this computer I'll be getting will play it.
