View Full Version : Not sure I'm into SEV demo

I'm trying to get into SEV but I'm having a tough time. The interface makes it difficult to read. I like the ship design but I'm not sure if the deck levels make a difference. There are almost to many buttons now. What I hate the most is the system screens. They are just too clustered and some times names overlap details. Modding is going to be a pain now. Can anyone figure out the formulas for each weapon?

I'm still going to give it a chance.

The deck levels are for extra space only; SE5 actually has fewer buttons on the main screen which is part of the problem (SE4 had 40, SE5 has around 30).

Fyron has a program out to make the forumla's for you. Once you get the hang of them I think they'll offer a lot more flexibility than the SE4 system.

EDIT: to improve the system screen a bit, go into Empire Options, click System Display. I personally hide all the names except for the warp points, reduce the empire flag size to Medium, and show only the Empty Construction Que, Has Spaceyard and Can Resupply icons. Cleans things up a little.

I have to disagree with your modding comment, SEV is much more modder friendly, I'm really looking forward to modding SEV.

Check out the 'Questions about modding SEV' thread for a weapon fomula tool.

The decks are just there to provide more slots in case you need them. In most of the shipsets it doesn't usually come close, but for some of the narrow sets you might fill a copy of decks.

The formulas for weapons are not that difficult - it's just a little cluttered with the variables in them that makes hard to understand. There's a question thread that deciphers the formula.

For most files, it's actually easier/faster to mod than SE:IV.

Example: to make the anti-proton beam in SE5, you fill out ONE component entry. In SE4 you needed twelve of them.

I'll try making those adjustments in the demo.

That's good hear able a formula gen. I'll check that out later on.

I've been using thorfrog for a long time so I figured it was time to update.

The demo is definitely growing on me... but the bugs and UI are probably going to keep me just watching the patch info for a while. However, when I get my hands of the Spore creature editor, I'll definitely want to start making my own SEV races... so that means not much more than a 6 month wait and see. Hmmm... I wonder if the UFO models from Spore will be able to be converted to SEV ship formats.

I've been playing the SEV demo for a few days now and I'm liking it more and more as I get used to the interface. If you had asked me two days ago, I would have said I'm not going to buy SEV unless they do a lot of changes to make it more friendly to use. But now after playing it for several hours, it's becoming easier to navigate around and I will definitely buy the full version when it comes out next month. Sure, there's little bugs and annoyances but I can live with those; hopefully they will be fixed eventually in patches like what Aaron did with SEIV.

Im finding it playable now that Ive gotten the answer to about a dozen questions. I think that Strat 1st should definetly do a rewrite of the readme file in the demo as soon as possible with some of the FAQ's we are seeing here
Just IMHO

Se5 definitely has a learning curve to the basic UI, which is something of a shame.

The track record wasn't good there though. Else we wouldn't have a 100-page "newbie FAQ" for SE4. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/wink.gif

I'm also liking it better than the first few days. But the never ending processing of turns its a hassle- even with autosave each turn on.

The other problem is the UI. If we could minimize the lower half and let's say call up the map or the button panel when needed would be a nice option.
