View Full Version : OT: The old faces are returning!

With the release of the SE5 demo, I've been seeing a few of the old faces around again, after long absences. It is truly good to see. Lets start a list of those returning from long absences (or long lurking sessions). Off the top of my head, I can think of two:
- Matryx, I presume the author of the ever useful SEIV mod launcher.
- Aiken
Please feel free to add names to the list, especially your own if you're coming back after a long absence!

Umm..does a five minute absence count?

I've never done much more than lurk...and take a few cat naps...but I'm hear again. Gotta pick up on the juicy SEV discussions...

I was here during the VERY early days of SE4 and there is actually even an early mod of mine still posted around here somewhere I think.
I've changed computers and email so I had to create a new screen name, but used to post as 'Talenn'.

Yes I remember you Talenn.
It's a bit like at the end of Bab5 where they go around waking up the elder races for the final confrontation...

I was here late SEIII and very early SEIV. I made a shipset called the Scrin Victory Fleet that's still floating around. I was Arbiter051 back in the day (I think.)

Thanks for the welcome back =)
Incidentally, I pretty much sit 24/7 on our IRC room, even if I don't speak much during the day I can often be reached that way, and yes I tend to lurk more than post.

Well my face is not really OLD http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/happy.gif
But it's good to see that SE 5 arouse interest amongst both old-timers and new gamers. I'd rather greet the last ones, cause new people bring new ideas and hope for further community development.
PS: Fresh blood at last! (c) Some kind game.

I was looking through some old papers in my attic office and found some stuff I had printed off about SEIV. It was dated 2001 and was maybe from an email mailing list, or maybe it was a how-to-play guide that consisted of comments from a variety of people. Many names I don't see here.

Dubious Strategy Guide, perhaps?

Ah, I remember seeing Talenn on these boards, many years back. I wonder if Dubious will be back. Every so often Tampa Gamer pops up, so its safe to say he will be back as well.
Nice to see the old guard coming back. If you look through the oldest archives of these boards, some of the names really bring back memories. Hope we see more of those guys.

Hey guys, its nice to still be remembered after all this time! http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/wink.gif
I honestly dont even remember who TDM referred to. I think it was Tampa Gamer, Daynarr or something close, and Mephisto?
This is almost like the Blues Brother..."I'm getting the band back together"... http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/wink.gif
I'm looking forward to SE5, but I'm a little skeptical now because of the demo. The crashes and instability are quite worrisome, as are the reports that the AI is still pretty random and lame.
My group of friends actually kept playing my own heavily modded SE4 until quite recently when some of the patches somehow broke TCP/IP play for us. I'm hoping SE5 is more stable in that regard as that was truly the best way for us to play it.
Great to see everyone still here though (or returning here as well)!

Tampa Gamer, Devnull and Mephisto, if I remember right.

Devnull's a mod. Talenn/Joe is right, it's Daynarr. Kinda creepy, me knowing stuff like that when I haven't even spent half as much time on the boards as most people have..... http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/wink.gif

Devnullicus started the Devnull mod.
Uncle_Joe:
You can still play SE4 TCP/IP if you set up a virtual LAN with Hamachi.

Hmm, I might have to look into that one day...But trying to get my friends to all get on the same page with something like that would be like pulling teeth methinx! http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/wink.gif
Any ideas why SE4 suddenly developed TCP/IP problems in the later patches? We played a LOT before SF took over and those patches came out. But after 1.94 or so, we were never able to reliably connect.
Thanks for the suggestion though. If SE5 doesnt pan out, then perhaps I'll look into that.

The first deluxe patch broke TCP/IP, but the next one should have fixed it.
Just out of curiosity, why not use PBW to autohost your games?
Fyron
September 23rd, 2006, 03:36 AM
SE4 is unable to traverse two sides of NAT routers. If you only have one side (player OR host), you can get it to work, I think. But with routers all around? http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/frown.gif

Hey Uncle_Joe/Talenn, your old screen name is not forgotten here as well!
(and for the record, yes the "D" is/was Daynarr, not Devnull)
Uncle_Joe
September 24th, 2006, 01:36 PM
Hey TG,
Yep, I thought I remembered Daynarr. Is he still around here?
I'm hoping to get back into SE once SE5 is released but at the moment, the demo is basically unplayable for me so I'll have to reserve judgement. Is there a planned 'TDM' modpack for SE5 yet? http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/wink.gif
Fyron/SJ:
Assuming you guys are beta-testers, has SE5 cleaned up the TCP/IP coding? I just think its odd that SE4 worked forever until 'patched' and then never again reliably. I'm hoping that doesnt represent a change in the coding structure that carries on into SE5's MP connectivity.

Hrmm... I was around way back when... I guess... I think the memory is failing in old age! http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/tongue.gif
The SEV demo is very promising. Many bugs as yet... more like a limited open beta than an actual demo. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/wink.gif
But the actual game play, I like for the most part. The AI is lame but then in the locked/grayed out controls for starting a new game the AI is locked in medium, and if it follows the SEIV pattern that means the AI isn't running on all cylinders in the demo with missing ministers and all.

Nope, it was me, Devnullicus http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/happy.gif (though, I don't think I was the "D" in TDM). I usually go by Devnull, actually, but the name was taken on these boards already, so I used Devnullicus.
Oh, and hi guys! I've been playing the demo and I have to say I'm pretty hooked again. Sadly, I'm already thinking about possible mods. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/happy.gif

Yeah, it's been a while. I'm still around, though, and looking forward to SE5.
As for devnullmod, yeah, I've gone through it and I'm pretty happy with how it was maintained. Hell, I'm just happy it was maintained at all! Kudos to those who took up the maintenance and expansion of the mod! (Geoschmo, Rollo, and anyone else who helped..thanks!)

I'm still here lurking off and on though I haven't posted in a long time and I'm pretty sure most here may not remember me at all.
I've been playing the SEV demo lately and will get the game when it comes out. For the modding potential if nothing else.
Dom3 also looks mighty tempting to me.
These are great boards here and I have a real fond spot for them and for Shrapnel.

Ah yes, Tradewars, with the "Ferrengi" space pirates from "Ferrengal"... the things they do to (somehow successfully) avoid lawsuits http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/rolleyes.gif
Then there were the inevitable players with godlike trade empires but godawful names like "Dickweed" (an actual one I still remember! http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/eek.gif) or some sort of wacko "hacker's guild" style name with like 300 punctuation characters and special "guild markings" in several colors, along the lines of "--==([[TH3 |<i||4z]]) bobafett69 ==--" http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/tongue.gif
But yes, it was fun http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/laugh.gif Even when "Dickweed" blew up my wimpy (albeit juicy) "CargoTran 3000" in his "Imperial Death Frigate of Warp Interdiction and +10 to Stealth and Dark Resistance" or whatever it was http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/tongue.gif
