Friends! Americans! Countrymen! Lend me your ears!
Everyone go on over to the Official site www.spaceempires5.com (http://www.spaceempires5.com) and contribute your minds. It's time for a change. We have our own home now. You no longer have to be that brother in law sleeping on the couch, eating all the food, and drinking all the soda or beer.

Come! See the many qualities of our new home. Sure!, there are improvements that need to be done. In due time! Come lend your suggestions! Get in early into the Space Empires Universe.

I can not make you leave. But let it be known that the powers that own this place do not have to come down here to evict you. They can simply, and very effectively, bombard you from orbit! You will have no way to fight them!

Come home to your new place. We welcome you all with open arms.

Shrapnel will always be the official forums to me.

We've got:
- great forums
- friendly admins
- nice people
- most of a decade of history
Overall: Totally awesome, with 7+ years of empirical evidence.

The new place:
- weak forums
- unknown admin(s)
- shortly to be filled with flash-in-the-pan retail gamers
- zero history
Overall: Wouldn't be signed up there if I wasn't a beta

Yep, not moving. I might start to check in on the spaceempires5.com boards if they begin to... well, not suck. But, Shrapnel is the place to be.

And hey, I'm not leeching, I've bought other titles from them, and am thinking over a few more. But not for a while, my plate will be full of grad school, SEV, and Dom3 until the new year. Plus, we're all free advertising. We see all the other titles they have and perhaps buy them, and we bring more people to Shrapnel's site, who may also buy titles. I guess when I was overtly negative about the forum software there I was told that I was being un-constructive. I ask you, can you think of anything constructive to say about that antiquited POS forum software they have? No offense, free is a very good price indeed, but come one guys, if that site is too become the flagship site for the SE franchise, at least you could use some decent forum software.

Ok I checked out the forums you suggest and well..

Although I know little these days, that forum style/type is more appropriate for small-scale MUDing of the 100-200 person variety, not for what you can/will be faced with. EZboard for example is far more set up for your needs (or perhaps I too am used to a certain supposed "standard format" but..)

I have always liked the front end possibilities of the boardtype spaceempiresV.com is using but the user interface strikes me as lame.

Too much wasted space informing me of options I will almost never use between each post and that leads to less information between screens.

Tbh, I have never liked the way this forum is put together either ESPECIALLY it's completely utterly totally useless search function. IF I have to use +-etcetc parameters then it sucks. Period. Did I mention that searching for information in this format is weak/lame/almostimpossible>?

I fully desire someone to point out how much of a time wasting fool I have been in regards to this but you try searching for an exact match to mictlan blood strategies (dominions , soon to be 3) or how to use shields in SE and you might see what I mean.

I REALLY like how sanely moderated these forums are. Screw flames, if you light an inappropriate match here the users themselves let you know and then 1/100000 times the mods have to lock things. Spent time on many a board where A post saying "Roses are red" will end up in a ^%$$%# flame blast ending in recrimination and ridiculous flagrant name calling only to be locked by arbitrary mods of one side or another. The "toast" level in these forums is light "tan" and I like it.

Long winded way of saying that we currently have largely crappy software being used ingeniously.

But I heard it here, not on the "official" site which doesn't even have an up to date listing of any pertinant info on the game (release date, bugs fixed in the demo, etc).

Until that other site has more information (and a better BBS), I'll just stick here...

Only a occasional poster, so far less perspective than some of the seasoned players here. I come to this site for game advice, formulas and tips. For years, the advice and information has been good here. Since there has not a been a problem with Shrapnel, why suggest the move? So far there is nothing to suggest that the information will be better elsewhere. When there isn't an apparent reason for moving, it makes one wonder about other motives for suggesting a move.

SF: Wha?
SG: (confused) some of the fans were hanging out by the kegerator talking about it going gold over at your place.
SF: (more confused) I didn't see a posting about that at my place.
SG: Really? Aren't you publishing it?
SF: Yep, in 2006 but I didn't know it went gold.

I for one plan to visit both sites regularly, with a frequency depending on relative post volume. Currently I'm visiting Shrapnel daily and Strategy First weekly, on average. The only good reason I can think of to stop visiting here would be having insufficient time to follow multiple forums.

As far as BBS software goes, IMO UBB is the least bad commonly used software among the forums I've visited. The only Web interface I don't dislike was custom-coded by that site's Webmistress, but is reputedly a bear to maintain, and my preference for it seems to be a minority opinion among the regulars there.

Rollo

It is unlikely that I'll check any other SE forums or sites on a regular basis apart from this one.

Perhaps a split between SE4 and SE5 would be good, though. SE4 topics seem to get drowned pretty fast. And I don't really think there'll be less discussion once the full version of SE5 is out.

I have no plans to cease my activities here. First off, I'm actually somewhat known here, and in turn know many of the people here. I've visited many other forums, usually just a couple times, and I have never found one yet that can match the sheer amount of knowledge, maturity and dedication that the people who come here display on a day to day basis. No one denegrates newcomers to the game or forum, everyone is eager to share knowledge, and even the occasional instance where conversations become heated, people refrain from attacking others.

I don't want to leave, and I will not be leaving until this forum is eventually closed down, or until I die of old age. Hopefully the latter, since that shouldn't be for another 60-70 years!! http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/cool.gif

And you know what, I dont think I'm going to be evicted. Because this forum drives traffic and I'm not the only one who buys other Shrapnel games. Oh, and we self moderate.

Other forums, wither they are hosted by SFI, Fyron, or Aaron's dog, dont really thrill me. But by all means, go be a factious splitter. Go off and form the SE5 Peoples Front. Or the Peoples Front of SE5. Or whatever you're calling it this week. Splitter.

Speaking of other Shrapnel games, is the new ATF game not being published through Shrap? I saw a preview on Tacticular Cancer, and theres a beta-demo out on the developers site, but I dont see any mention of it here on Shrap.

I'm English, with Canadian citizenship, married to an American.

I'm proud to be British, English, UK-ish, canadian and semi-American.

And my head hurts.

That's OK, man. Nobody's perfect http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/wink.gif

OK, OK, "Ugly American" humor aside, what does nationality have to do with anything? Isn't that a rather irrelevant consideration in the world of internet games?

AGREE WITH YOU...............BTW. I'm not an American http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/wink.gif

So do I!

That's why I said it because the initial post was adressed to Americans and countrymen, which is in this context not appropriate IMO. You could get the impression (although I am sure that this was not the intention) that the new forum site invitation was restricted to American.

Yes, and nothing for us non-Americans to be annoyed about.

Suggesting leaving here on the other hand......

Ok. I'll explain. I considered the phrase when I used it. My view is that the words "Friends and countrymen" can apply to those who are not "Americans".

Mainly the title and creative speech was to grab attention(It sure did.Hehe.) to invite others to visit spaceempires5.com. It might have seemed to suggest permanently leaving Shrapnel but that was not what I meant. I agree that this is a good community and I visit here and other sites.

Plus, some other sites are still trying to become more presentable.

I may pop over and have a look around. But that certainly doesn't mean I would abandon this site.

Somehow, "OK! Let's Shut This Place Down!" has a rather..... permanent..... feel to it http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/firedevil.gif

I have to agree, opening a speech with "Shutting this place down..." doesn't come off as the best pitch for getting us to change.

ok, enough of this PC stuff. The site will be restricted to Romans only. All writing will be in Latin. (At least, as veteran SE players, we're all used to the Roman numerals! http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/happy.gif )

Gotta say I have no intention of going to the new site at this time. All the knowledge is here and quite honestly the community is here.

Even if I do little more then occasionally lurk anymore.
