You go to work on a US holiday, and what do you get? Last pick of nations!

I'll take...well, if you're going to go down in flames, Abysia must be the right choice! Hey wait, they have *lighter* armor than in earlier ages?? Forget that...

OK, with all the undead running around, even though I played them in Council of Wyrms, Marignon is one of my favorites. Beest thou pious & chaste, or we shallst Inquisite thee. In boats!

Just a quick question about the rules: aren't 10 cumulative VPs a little bit low? I mean, if somebody manages to capture only two VPs early, then the whole game will just last 4 1/2 years. If somebody manages to capture 3 and later 4, the game will last only 2 1/2 years. That will make imprisoned pretenders more or less useless.

djo
October 10th, 2006, 06:04 PM
A bit late, but I'm in the fewer VP camp. I think it won't be easy to hang onto those VPs for year after year. 13 sounds fine to me. Non-capitols, if you please.

PashaDawg
October 10th, 2006, 09:04 PM
Thanks for pointing that out, Bluebird.

My hope was to set things up so that the game would likely end by around Turn 60 (5 years) with a chance that it would last longer. (Points are awarded every 12 turns, and so I don't think there can be 1/2 years.)

The original suggestion to me assumed that VP's would be in capitals only, but I don't want that because I believe it makes the capitals of newer players easy, cheap targets.

With that mind, maybe we should raise the winning score to 20.

1/3 of the total VP provinces would be 5. A player would have to be pretty successful early on to achieve that number of points by turn 48.

What do the other players think?

WraithLord
October 10th, 2006, 09:32 PM
I am for raising VP to 20.

Jurri
October 10th, 2006, 09:37 PM
I'd say 10 is plenty. Someone gets ahead, you pull him back to the gutter. (15 would be in line with the number of players and the number of VPs, though.)

Boron
October 10th, 2006, 09:45 PM
I vote for raising it to 25 or 30.

Imho the game should end in the turn 60-100 range http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/happy.gif.

It is not easy to "pull back" someone with cumulative VPs. There is only "being faster".

I am also for 20 points at least. 10 VPs is definelty too small. Also, I think the game starts in Spring, right? VPs are awareded in Summer, right? Thats why I wrote 1/2 years. It should be even less ...

Jurri
October 11th, 2006, 12:17 AM
Ah... I'm Mr. Popular it seems. It is certainly quite flattering to have my very own fanclub! I shall dub it 'Bottomfeeders - the Jurri fanclub' and Boron will be the chairman.

Bird: you can always stall someone back by taking his VPs away: that means he won't get any more points, while others are. Thus, he is pulled back relative to others. Especially since VPs are not in the capital provinces, they should be grabbable if you're dedicated enough. Not to mention that there are 12 whole turns to grab the VPs after scoring them once. That said, I've naturally not played with them yet, so I'm talking outta my *** here http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/happy.gif

You sure they're only counted every 12 months? Remember a _lot_ of things have been described as happening every season, every year, etc, when they occur every month.

Edit : Just tested, and it does occur each summer. Oddly, even with VPs in capitols, capitols don't display a VP symbol, when they probably should.

Jurri and I have considered the VP issue closely. Not that we are the big dogs on the block (or at least he isn't)... but here is what we figure:

There are 274 Prov total. 227 land & 47 sea. That is about 18 prov per VP. That's a lot. It will be hard to have a big empire early on.

In any case, after playing out a scenario, we figured that a 13 winning score would be better than 10. It will better ensure that the game does not end TOO quickly unless a player is the total cat's meow.

So, unless there are a lot of objections, the winning score will be 13. That is, DAWG'S LUCKY NUMBER 13!!!

I have it from a very reliable source that the sick blood-sucking "pretender" from Mictlan is addicted to wedgies. In fact, the mysterious hole in Mictlan's financial records was the direct result of the "pretender" from Mictlan shamelessly funding his habit by raiding Mictlan's treasury every weekend.

Ulm hereby moves that an independent committee be set up to investigate this closely on behalf of the Mictlan subjects, who are the real victims in this scandal!!

The media greatly exaggerates the expansiveness and overall evilness of Mictlan. You should instead look towards the VP-graphs for your vicious hatemongering! Just who are these guys who don't hesitate to grab the lead?

(Izaqyos, I hope you haven't suppressed the memory of the Ermor/Pythium showdown in the game before RAND http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/happy.gif That was fun, even if playing Ermor feels emptier inside.)

Look, man, how is it our fault that your people are turning to our religion? I think it's time for some serious introspection here.

I won't lie, the cult of Ganon has a very attractive benefit package.

Furthermore, I think it's completely disgraceful that you go around poking your big, fat nose into the affairs of the citizens of R'lyeh. What they do in the sanctity of their bedrooms is no business of yours whatsoever, and you'd do well to remember that.

As for them residing on the border, I'd like to take this time to inform you that we here in R'lyeh believe in freedom. Freedom of choice. Those people are there because they want to be there. Perhaps they admire the mountainous scenery or enjoy the brisk, coastal air. Unlike you, we don't pry into the private lives of our citizens, and frankly we'd rather you didn't, either. If you don't love freedom, that's your choice, but you'd better give us ours or there'll be hell to pay.

Good day, sir.

djo
October 25th, 2006, 07:58 PM
R'lyeh? Choice? Pfah! Why, it was not too many moons ago that I was walking down the street (one of our long, straight, beautifully paved underground streets), when a clean-cut gentleman in a white suit handed me some interesting literature in the form a self-published pamphlet. He was convinced that the end of the world was nigh, and that the apocalypse would come "gibbering, from the sea, in squamous, leprous, bulbous, creeping horror". As any sane man would do, I said, "Pshaw!" and walked on.

But then the frog-people started coming on-shore, with their odd languages, and odd cooking, and none of them working or paying taxes, either. Suddenly I realized the truth of what that kind gentleman was saying, and thus we swore: R'lyeh would be burned to the ground, or should be burned were it not underwater. That small point gave me some mental contortions for some time, I may say, until I realized we could do just as well by burying that twisted city under piles of very heavy rocks, of which we have many.

In conclusion, I think my carefully reasoned arguments will sway any intelligent man/woman/beast/wyrm/etc. of the essential truth of the matter: R'lyeh is evil, we are good, and...wait...no, that about sums it up.

Signing off,

Agartha

They will all rue the day...the dead came looking for the monkeys, and no one listened to their high-pitched girly-shrieks. The Agarthans called for aid, in their deep, manly, cavernous voices, but no one heeded our words. Near 500 madmen and squid stand on our borders, and no doubt thousands of dead stand on your borders, but still the others ignore us. They will regret it. When the end comes for them, they will wonder, why didn't we help Agartha? Why did we let them perish? Surely some kind neighbor will assist us, now that the hideous hordes of dead madmen slosh against our castle walls.

But those cries will not be answered, for you let all your neighbors die.

The moral of the story: the coastline of a penninsula 2 hops away from LA R'lyeh and its awake pretender is, to put it mildly, not a good starting position.

okiN
November 1st, 2006, 07:12 AM
If they are, then it is a war we know nothing about. We are merely mustering the forces who were standing idly by on Agartha's borders. No hostile action has been taken and there is no cause for alarm.

Edit: Correction! My scouts have just informed me that the vile Agarthans have launched an unprovoked sneak attack, violating the sanctity of R'lyehian soil.

We take this to be a declaration of war and will respond accordingly.

Yea, verily, a dastardly sneak attack of the highest order executed by thundering pachyderms.

In other news, the pathetic speck of lint known as Agartha is soon to be brushed from the face of the Earth. Their armies will be destroyed and their populace slaughtered like so many swine for a midsummer feast. Let them serve as an example to the world at large of the fate of those who would commit unprovoked aggression against the people of R'lyeh.

okiN said:and there is no cause for alarm.

Apparently we of Argatha have overly anxious personalities. We found the 500 illithids and mad dreamers and ghost king on our border to be rather alarming.

The attack was not a sneak attack. Elephants do not "sneak". It was an unprovoked attack.

Given that it's that time of year again, when the universe updates the score in the great game of life, we presumed to assume that, presumably, we were about to be attacked anyway.

In summary, R'lyeh bad, Agartha good. I hope that clears everything up.

okiN
November 1st, 2006, 06:36 PM
The illithids were just passing through, the dreamers were about to be ferried away to do battle with independent forces and the ghost king was searching for magic sites (Which he found, as you can see from the gem graph). Until this vile act of Agarthan aggression, that is.

Furthermore, I daresay any open act of aggression not preceded by a formal declaration of war is to be regarded as a sneak attack.

You were in no danger of being invaded. You had no reason to fret on behalf of your precious "victory point" given the great big fort you'd built on it.

And yet, you attacked.

R'lyeh, on the other hand, has taken no hostile measures against any nation and has tried its best to maintain friendly relations with all the peoples of the world.

I must say, as primitive as your Agarthan minds are, your twisted logic is entirely beyond our comprehension.

Hmm. I tend to agree with Jurri. The patch seems to have a bug that makes a nasty horror attack heros who are not horror marked. This could be very frustrating for some players.

What do other players think?

On one hand, I have already patched and would rather not deal with installing a 3.0 version. I think random rampaging horrors are a feature, not a bug.

On the other hand, I don't have any heroes, and I expect to be defeated very soon now.

Yes, simply because it's one of the patches that introduced more, bigger, problems than it fixed.

To prevent people crying and stop playing because their pretender dies in a horror attack in turn 2 i would prefer a start without the patch.

But here we've the problem that i'm not sure that all players could install a second 3.0 Version of the game.

An illwinter coment about a hotfix would be very good!

I have received all turns for turn 16, but I am going to delay hosting until Tuesday to give more time to discuss whether to patch or not patch. Players seem to be nearly equally split.

Some players would get fixes with the patch. Others are concerned that it creates more problems.

Ugh! Now, I am coming around to thinking it would be best to NOT use the patch. I know that is very inconvenient for some players. However, it sounds like the horror-bug could seriously frustrate players and spoil the fun.

I know that some players would benefit from the patch's fixes, but I think it is more appropriate to stay with the current "broken" game rather than introduce new problems.

Shovah32
November 6th, 2006, 03:20 PM
Well ive already patched aswell (several days ago) so i would prefer to either play with the patch or just wait until there is a fix for the horror bug (however small the fix maybe, just reducing the frequency might help) but in the end, its not up to me.

Jurri

It really is not that hard to revert your installation: you'll just need to install the game to a temp directory and copy the dom3.exe to your previous installation. You'll avoid inputting CD-keys, reinstalling maps and whatever, takes a couple of minutes at most, and even less if you can multitask something while the installer confirms itself and copies the files. Take the chance to make copies of both the patched executable and the unpatched one under dom301.exe and dom300.exe in your folder and make suitably named shortcuts to both while you're at it and you can play whichever version you need.

To not be willing to take that measly amount of trouble to secure the enjoyment of those who have valuable commanders on the HoF (like those fellas with their SC-pretenders) certainly sounds pretty petty to me. (Not to mention that having to avoid the HoF with your important commanders that aren't there yet makes for weird gameplay indeed.)

Even if we really fail to get folks to revert, I suggest you go ahead and continue hosting with the old version: At worst someone will get a [censored] up battle-replay when my turkeys attack, and at best no one will even notice.

It's fairly disturbing that Dreamlands of all things is fourth in income... Then again, I understand the population loss -effect of its dominion is not working quite as intended (as in, it doesn't scale with dominion), so I guess it's not that surprising after all. By way of conjecture, it's no wonder at all that they can afford to hire the mercenaries...

From what I can tell from my single singleplayer experience, the population loss is pretty much a nonfactor. I had a growth3 dominion and even with heavy 200% taxes usage for most of the game my pop was still at 15k at turn 80.

So dreamlands gets tons of freespawns, free prophets, lots of gold and those wonderful void thingies.

It was early morning on the fields of Fairgrove. The army of Man was on the march to retake the control over the farmlands from the evil forces of Mictlan. There were defenders and archers of Man. Even a small group of Wardens had joined the ranks. In total, the army was made up of roughy 120 men and was lead by Bluebird, the Brilliant God, and legitimate ruler of this province.

On the other side of the battlefield stood the forces of Mictlan. There was a large group (around 100) of local militia troops - not really worth to mention, except for their strange, colorful costumes and the slings that they were carrying. About half of them fled after the first blast of arrows hit them from the archers.

But then there were the actual forces of Mictlan, that had just arrived from a conquoring raid to the north. They were lead by Rumbler, the prophet of Mictlan - a former scout and vicious character that would do everything to please his foul master. The troops contained around a group of foul spawns, ugly inbreeds originating from Mictlan experiments, 30 eagle warriors and 11 jaguar warriors.

Jaguar and eagle warrior are fanatic fighters for the cause of Mictlan rulership. The were immediately blessed by the prophet, giving them supernatural powers beyond the forces of men: increased attack and defense skills, flaming weapons, magic resistance, quickness and - most important - a twist in faith that will yield the first hit aginst them useless.

The eagle warrior, now blessed, directly approached the archers and slaughtered them. Every body kept on fireing against these warriors, archers with arrow, wardens and defenders used their crossbows. There were heavy losses on both sides.

Then the jaguar warriors clashed with the wardens. The wardens gave their best, but it is hard to fight an enemy that will transform into a beast once he is killed. Mictlan militias were trying to help the jaguar warriors, but actually did more damage in the own rankes through the inpricise aim of their slings.

In the end - after most Wardens were dead - the tide turned and the defenders started rushing forwards. The Mictlan army was retreating. A hard-earned victory for Man. Now it is time to bury the dead.

Wait, you _don't_ like cumulative VPs? Best damn thing to happen to the game imo - makes for more of a dynamic game than before. Maybe it sucks in some ways to be the guy with 23 out of 25 CVPs, as everyone gangs up on you, but hey, it always sucks to get ganged up on - but after you lose your VPs, they should stop ganging on you.

Hmmm - actually, anyone else think the score graphs need a new display? How many VPs everyone has, as opposed to how close to winning by cumulative VPs?

We have now seen the true colors of R'lyeh--a cowardly yellow (with queasy pink accents). Whilst our defenders were piously studying the holy books, the aggressors managed to claw a hole in our castle walls. But did they dare to enter? Pfah! They did not. The mighty Agarthan war machine remains undefeated.

One thing we must note, however...in the past we would not have thought the mindless masses of mermen wise enough to make this kind of decision (saving their skins by not challenging us). We congratulate them on being slightly less stupid than we had imagined, and we apologize for any undeserved insults regarding their pea brains, we may in fact be as large as walnuts, or small plums.

Let them serve as an example to those who would do wrong by us in the future. The mercy and patience of R'lyeh are not without limits.

In R'lyeh, "patience" must be a synonym for "cowardice". For months we have awaited their assault, but instead all we hear are the annoying poets of R'lyeh reciting their national epics to the troops in the hopes that some of them will take heart and try to storm the castle.

Hey, guys, here's a thought. Don't go making threats if tiny little bacteria and viruses are killing more of us than your troops are.

Fear not, the entire membership of the August Society of Learned & Pious Necromancers are chanting day and night to prevent that eventuality. And unless R'lyeh makes a move, soon god will awaken, and then it's a whole new ballgame. I think. The worshippers are kind of hazy at this point as to what god looks like, or what his powers are. It's been a long while.

Anyway, it's kind of sad, really. Hundreds of foul slimy things outside the walls, afraid of a handful of old men (many of them diseased). You've got to wonder if R'lyeh has any sense of pride whatsoever. But who are we to tell them how to run an empire?

Looks like I'm too late to fill in for a slot, unless there's someone else who's gone missing? If there is another vacancy, Ygorl pointed me thisaway to fill in.

Hi Ewierl!

Sorry. We have filled the slot. But we'll keep you in mind if another slot opens. I know that Kissblade has been looking for a replacement for his Yomi in the Dawnstrike game that I am hosting, in case you're interested. If you're interested in that, let me know.

Yo, PashaDawg, is there any chance I could also put myself on the waiting list?

Hi Mind Elemental:

Sure thing. Also contact Kissblade. He is looking for a replacement for his Yomi in the Dawnstrike PBEM game.
