View Full Version : So, what time of day do you think the patch...

...is coming out?

I am personally hoping that since SF1 is based in the Eastern time zone, it will be available this evening for me here in Houston. But am I being too literal in hoping for it being released 'technically' on the 16th? It's not like it's a physical shipment, after all... Maybe someone can point this out to Aaron... :-)

Wow... with all the hue and cry about the patch, you'd think somebody would be interested in the release time... BTW, does anybody know where it would be released?

Malfador.com and strat first would post a link I expect. It will be reported here very shortly afterwards.

I go to Malfador to look and I click on the patch page and get a message telling me it isn't even out yet (the game).

Coulda fooled me when I got it 2 weeks ago.

but we all know how long it takes for new stuff on malfador site after all.

That's because it was sold early by a number of retailers. The official date was and still is today.

So is it Winter yet?

Malfador being in CA, I wouldn't expect to see it before 9AM Pacific Time at the earliest.

SEV is now showing as available for order from the SF online store (and they're throwing in Star Fury for free), so I guess that makes it "released".

heh whys everyone think the patch is gonna be today? I'd give it another week if I were you.

I sent an email request on Thursday for the patch, since I had the game by then. I got an email back from Aaron (I feel like George Lucas sent me an email!) saying that the patch will be released today, the 16th.

From SEV News section (http://www.spaceempires5.com/en-US/node)
Montreal, Canada. October 11th, 2006 -- We here at Malfador Machinations are very excited that Space Empires V is finally available for purchase. We've put a lot of work into this game, but the work hasn't stopped. We continue to work with our beta testers and plan on releasing improvements October 16th, 2006!

Well I still don't think it will be today, but I think I went a bit far with my next week comment. It will be this week but not today.

I didn’t think that was to strong. Aaron hasn’t been the most punctual person when it comes to timely releases of patches or updates to the MM site. He seems to have this funny habit of wanting to add just one more fix or feature before release.

I like the "Release Early, Release Often" philosophy.
Code::Blocks releases nightly builds.

Does anyone know why the pre-release version came with Space Empires IV Deluxe, but the "current" release comes with Starfury? I would've liked to have gotten Starfury for free instead...

Different stores. EB-Games is doing SEIV, SFI is doing Starfury, and Steam gave you $5 off.

I was hoping to play a game with the patch tonight... not looking promising on the east coast.

Will this patch make 1.0 games unplayable?

Captain Kwok
October 16th, 2006, 08:55 PM
I don't think so. I don't recall any changes that altered the order of the data files which usually results in a broken saved-game.

AngleWyrm

Maybe someone could accidentally leave a patched version (v1.01+) in a p2p shared directory.

That's what happened over at BSG:Beyond The Red Line.
They had been boasting with teaser trailers for a while.
Boy were they hot too!

Tick tock.... the end draws near... and lots of SE fans are squirming in their computer chairs... (including this one - and not just from the 'roids!!) http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/tongue.gif

Well, Mr. Kwok. Any insight on the patch release? Think it may be delayed a few days? Whats the talk around the Beta tester water cooler? http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/happy.gif

Word on the street is that we're waiting for Aaron...

TheBigBlueBox
October 16th, 2006, 09:21 PM
I realize that Aaron does most of his work alone and it's hard to update websites and post on forums...

But when your publisher announces 10/16 as the date for the patch, wouldn't it be fair to just announce that the patch would be delayed instead of just keeping us in suspence...

Combat Wombat

Heh you guys gotta learn how Aaron works, he supports the games forever and does a great job with the patches themselves but he has never been great with the patch deadlines. Refrence my previous statements as to when the patch will come.

Again I say... okay no problem, just make sure your publisher doesn't say the patch will be released on 10/16...

And you think the marketing guys at SFI aren't pulling their hair out right now? Or any marketing/sales worker who is faced with the stereotypical perfectionist engineer who will not allow release to happen exactly as announced? Aaron has always been more about the game itself than about the presentation of it. He'll release it when it's ready.

I don't get it? Why do we need a patch? The game is perfect as is!

I guess it is if you're idea of perfect is lots of crashes, dead AI, and non-working features...

You should keep your promises.

If the current patch is unplayable, then let us have whatever improvements were in 1.01 or something.

TheBigBlueBox
October 16th, 2006, 11:02 PM
They're up to at least 1.07 now according to the fix list...

Just release 1.07 now if the next build isn't ready!!

Also because of the many ways SE5 is distributed the patch release process may be longer than it has been for say SE4. Steam needs it own loving and so do the direct download people and then the cd people need some too. It may have taken longer than expected to get the patch distributed to the various places. This is some new ground for SE games and in the case of Steam is new ground for alot of the games industry sometimes there are just unexpected problems.

Solymr
October 16th, 2006, 11:33 PM
As far as I know, the downloaded SE5 is just a download of the setup file that comes on the CD. Patching them would just require a link on the site.

Edit: Actually, did anyone purchase the download version? If so, I'd like to know the size of the setup file to compare to the CD setup exe.

It's OK, Aaron will release the patch when it's ready. He has never let us down before.

Although it doesn't really matter to me if the patch is late because here in Canada we still don't have the game yet. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/wink.gif http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/fear.gif

Another good reason to release patches sooner rather than later is that bug reports will be current, instead of duplicated old news.

Another reason to release on time is it displays visible control and makes you look like a god.

So, we waited one extra day and got a newer release. Sounds like a fair trade to me.
