View Full Version : About the apparent lack of stock empires...

In SE4 there were stock empires, I can't seem to find any in se5 though. I Read that I can quickstart with each of the races, then save that as a default empire, but my question is does SE5 always spawn the same empire in a quickstart, or is it the same empire for each race(like if I keep picking terrans will they be the same terrans)?
Also will there ever be any official "stock" races?

What is unofficial about the races in the game already?

You can only pick them in quick games. The Empires are not available in the new game options.

Yep, weird. Sounds like a bug to me. Either a bug, or someone was rushing.

The quickstart races seem to be the same each time they are selected. If you save the empire and and load it for a new game though, there is a bug in which you get lots of extra research points.

The 14 main races always use the same traits and stuff as defined in their setup files. Only neutrals have randomally generated attributes etc.

I suspect even these are governed by the Default_Setup_Script file, in that if you add a new one but it isn't listed in the Racial Traits section of that, they won't choose it.

Definitely not a bug; there just aren't any default .emp files included with the game. Any .emp file you make can be selected normally.

And it's going to confuse and frustrate anyone who is playing SE or 4x for the first time. Did someone actually make a conscious decision to not include any default human player empires? And not provide a walkthru creating your first empire in the manual, or a tutorial? Or was it just over looked?

Even that is not a bug. A lacking feature, yes. But how is it an error in the game code?

Oh come Fyron. You know what im talking about. Call it bug, or a lacking feature. Its missing, and its an integral part of a game.

A bug is an existing feature that doesn't work or dosen't work right.
Besides, EMP files require stable racial setup options to make any sense at all to the game.

Doh. Okay i promise to differ between bug and lacking-feature from now on. Of course, there is a quite thin line between the two of them, regarding SEv.
However I didnt really know you guys are fans of nitpicking words when its obvious what im talking about. Cant you just admit it would just be normal to have premade empires, if only for flavour-reasons ?

Didn't I just say it is a lacking (missing) feature in my last post?

As beta testers, there is a very large distinction in our minds between bugs and missing features.
One is very much easier to get Aaron to work on than the other.

There ARE default human empires (at least from the demo, I've been too busy lately to install the full version http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/frown.gif ). Use the quickstart, and you can select one of the races to play.
I would say that it would be more confusing for new players to have multiple copies of the 'same' empire that correspond to different starting options. Or more confusing to have one empire file, and have error messages pop up saying the empire is, for example, using too many racial points. Or having pre-made empire files that use the minimum racial points, and new players complain about the AI or multiplayer humans "cheating" by having bonuses that they don't have.

I cannot recall anyone making this complaint about the 2000 point empires included in SE IV. Has anybody else heard this?
