So having observed Oceania's aggressive behaviour, I decide to bait a trap, I boost my border province with him to PD 30 and put the majority of my military might, plus a small army of mages there. I am confident he will attack and his knights of the depths will be utterly destroyed.
He attacked...but only 1 army (out of 2, less then half my force) and no mages turned up to fight. He trashed them. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/frown.gif
Why?
Well, I set the mages to site search and my prophet to preach. I got 'lucky' and discovered a site which turned up a castle, which of course mean't that by the time Oceania attacked only commanders/mages set to patrol would fight him...ARRRRGGHHHH!
So over half my army and my mages sat on there rear ends in the castle watching the 30 PD + other half my army be squished.
Now my 'new castle' is under siege, soon to be in Oceania's hands and I now have not got a big enough army to protect my mages long enough to destroy Oceania's forces. Especially as Oceania has brought up reinforcements.
Talk about 1 factor creating a utter military diaster...sheesh...the lesson of the day...when defending a province put all your forces on patrol.
I am going to scream in a dark room now...

When i played the game it started whit 2 battles across the world,
2 fishmen attacked some provinces in the midst of enemy grounds. 1 on caelum and 1 on jotum ground. They were not stealthy and im possitive they werrent there before. Thise is not possible.
Latter i noticed in my capital 2 Oceania tritons whit magic skills. non-commanders. No clue how they got there and why they got those skills.
No strange things happened in disadventage to me i think so i will keep on playing.

Indeed, I found it quite odd that a lone, non-stealthy fish-man bearing Oceania's colors attacked a province far from Oceania's territories. Ah well, we had fish soup, no worries. Good thing my first act as king of the giants was to put light province defense in all my territories though...;)

P.S. This is the prophet of Yomi elaborating on that -- we can make items of up to Construction 6, and will do so for a low, low 20% over the item's cost. (So we would charge 10+2 = 12 gems for a Skull Staff).

The Ermor senate has elected Nerongula as its new leader. "All must burn" was his first and only declaration. The mad elder has taken the title of Dictator and ordered all the senators to fight in the last regular Ermorian army. He also freed all the slaves of the Ermorian arenas and asked them to burn the immortal city.
(ooc : sorry to have played so stupidly in this game, I'm probably engaged in too much, and made a lot of mistakes, from my pretender design not adapted to a fast game to recent moves, as well as I've completly neglected diplomacy ; anyway this is the end for Ermor, I've just not turned it AI to see the results of the last battles, and for the pleasure of ending this suicide myself)

Gandalf the Niefel Jarl strode onto the battlefield, leading a host of lesser giants. His frosty gaze looked on as the boulder hurlers charged forward to take down the wall of the fortress. These pigeon half breeds would not last a minute even against the lesser giants. As bloody feathers flew though, a worrisome thing was seen. The Caelum Cyclops Jurri stood at the edge of the battlefield frantically enchanting himself. As the last of the chicken-men were ground under giant boots Jurri stepped forward with a hideous grin.
The large giant host charged forward, with only this lone creature between them and the castle it would not be long before the victory feast began. As they surrounded him though, it became apparent that this fight would not be so easily won. Their blows passed straight through the magically lucky, ethereal cyclops, and the few that managed to land bounced harmlessly off the granite-hard body. To make matters worse, he wielded a terrible sword which cut through stout giantish armor as if it were paper.
“Enough” said Gandalf, drawing his sword and striding forward, flanked by his personal body guard of niefel giants. Enough of his lesser cousins had fallen to this freak, it was time for him to take a personal hand. Lets see how he fared against the fury of the north.
As the mighty giant began to trade blows with the cyclops, it became apparent that there would be difficulties. Gandalf’s cold, iron blade mostly passed harmlessly through the Cyclops, and Jurri had had the foresight to equip a ring giving him immunity to the giant’s legendary cold aura. As Jurri’s magically sharp sword nicked Gandalf, he became enraged, and in a fury of blows managed to draw blood on the Cyclops, only to see the small wound quickly regenerate. The two hammered back and forth, each regenerating the damage the other one dealt until with one mighty blow Jurri’s awesomely sharp blade cleaved Gandalf’s ice ageis in twain and in a backstroke left a gaping chest wound.
As blood filled his lungs, Gandalf quickly began to tire, and without his shield blows began to land more frequently and with more viciousness. Finally, Gandalf stumbled and Jurri sent his head flying.
Meanwhile, all along the Caelum border a giantish wave broke. In every province not defended by a cyclops, chicken men stood no chance against niefel power. Even our disposable mercenaries had a mixed bag of success, though the little people are so fragile that the group which ran afoul an eagle king did not fare so well.
I call on all people who do not wish to be subject to Caelish rule by next summer to rise up and strike along the border. The brave giants will lead the charge and take the brunt of Caelish wrath but we cannot stand alone once their superior magics are brought to bear against us. Unsupported we will fall, and the whole world will be subjugated by this one-eyed freak.
Jurri
January 3rd, 2007, 04:39 PM
Hah, who says C'tis PD sucks? http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/happy.gif
The vile opportunistic giants have some mixed facts it seems. T'ien C'hi, the boring nation of those dull bureaucrats, took up arms against the glorious Caelians first, and the yellow-bellied giants were prompt to follow suit when they saw an undefended border. (Indeed, no forewarning even, despite agreements of peace (albeit unspecified), which is always a sign of a small heart.)
So, not only are the giants not leading the charge in the sense of being the first to soil my lands with their filthy existence, they are facing but some peasants in the hinterlands... How glorious you make it sound, bringing destruction to simple farmers! Too bad the benevolent and beautiful and not-freakish-at-all cyclops can't be everywhere to protect his peoples.
(Excellent write-up, Baalz! http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/happy.gif)
I think it should be noted that, by my calculations, unless you guys manage to reduce my VP-provinces by at least one before the next scoring, I will Ascend then... It will be beautiful, a world free of war and ugliness.

Great misfortune has influenced the very essence of the world.
There is yet a battle atlantis has to win from Oceania but our forces are getting weak, despite there unequalled battle moral and training. Another battles like thise and im on the loosing side.
The trading whit Yomi has only resulted in 6 odd thisstle maces while our forces are starving for brott. And so the final attack on atalantis is delayed.
In the north, Agartha main force is very succesfull in ignoring the Caelum victory location and making it harder for me to lunach a invasion on Caelum.
And that while a few monkeys are sieging the Agartha's castle. Witch kinda sums everything up they have now.
And for some odd reason, the new ruler of Ermor (The one who released the slaves and onrdered them to burn everything) has paid a stunning 28 gold pieces for "The Fishmen" mercenaries. Thise is truthly a bad omen. Soon the superior mental and reasoning capebileties of fishmen can be used against us!
Can the situation for Oceania get any worser?
Im willing to blame Jurri's huge dominion of misfortue witch started to affect the fate of thise cursed world.

Oh, poor, deluded Migaares... Oceania's situation can get far worse! And it will, once I have ensured that the other pests that bug me have gotten their share of divine wrath. Assuming I don't Ascend before that, in which case you'd be off the fish-hook, I suppose.

The Eagle Kings make for quite decent thugs if you're willing to invest a couple dozen gems. Quite decent indeed, capable of taking on hundreds of enemies as Ygorl can attest... Well, you've got one for a playmate now, so enjoy! http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/happy.gif

If only you had timed your next attack closer summer like I expected, the aforementioned Tel City would've been ready, with all manner of undead fiends ready to pounce on any siegers. 1 turn left I think. :/
We'll just have to work with what we have now. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/happy.gif

Perhaps in anticipation of Jurris's ascent, the world goes mad. Nations attack their neighbours without provocation, and the giants of Niefelheim march into the Land of Oni, heedless of what may await them...

Foolish Gaulois of Marverni, you will remove your armies south of the river or they will be destroyed. The crippling of your pretender "god" is only the beginning of your pain if you do not leave our lands at once.

Sounds like the world is on the brink of disintegration: The giants rampage random bystanders, Marverni pillage T'ien C'hi, Agartha crushinates the fishpeople. How fitting... You'll soon be blessed with an insane (courtesy of Ygorl) god, of which this must be an omen.

Question: In the event that Jurri does not ascend this summer, it seems likely that by the following summer there could quite possibly be more than one nation with sufficient VPs to win. Is the winner determined by whoever has the highest number of VPs? What about if there is a tie?

Haha, not to worry, my dear friend the lizard. As it turns out, the alliance of the Giants and their pink-flagged masters have failed in breaching the walls of even a single one of my VPs. So, the result would have been the same even if I had not claimed one of your VPs mine... As it stands, I'll even have a surplus of points.
The next and final scoring is this following turn, unless I'm mistaken, so these will be the last sets of orders... It's kind of anticlimactic that we know the result with certainty a turn beforehand (or 36 turns, like Meglobob (http://www.shrapnelcommunity.com/threads/showthreaded.php?Number=469999) http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/happy.gif), but that is an artifact of the fort-system.

Ah! Won my bet, knew Jurri would win (once I finally figured out culmative VP's that is), congratulations to Jurri on a masterful game and thanks to Pasha for his professional hosting.
I liked playing Atlantis, once I had got used to it, my first ever water nation. Things do seem to move slower when your a water nation than a land nation.
I blame my total failure mainly on Oceania, who was ruthless in his use of those knights of the deep early in the game. If I had started where R'lyeh was I would have been destroyed in exactly the same way Pasha was, probably earlier. Took me 23 massed mages with untold gems plus nearly 200 troops and alot of research to eventually defeat Oceania's army.
Also having Teraswaerto and Solo as neighbours (both good players) blunted my expansion on land to anything beyond 2 measly provinces.
Anyway enough excuses, good game everybody! http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/smile.gif

I agree, well done Jurri!
This is the first time for me playing for cumulative VP, too, and was a learning experience as well. It was lot of fun getting to meet several players I have never played against before.
Many thanks to Pasha for an excellent job hosting the game. With so many players to keep happy, this is an unenviable chore, but should he be willing to organize another VP game similar to this one, please count me in.

Congratulations and thanks from me also, to Jurri and Pasha.
I had my glorious plan of overtaking the VP race with superior research after who ever tried to grab too many VPs too early was taken down by, well, everyone. Somehow it didn't quite pan out. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/laugh.gif After seeing Jurri's skill firsthand it's easy to see why.

Yeah, I think everybody underestimated how soon we had to act against the leader for cumulative VPs, heck by the time I stepped in to sub it was almost too late already. Jurri employed some very effective stalling tactics, but I like to think I'd have been able to take possibly two of the VPs in one or two more turns. Well, at least I'd breach the walls and run in with half a dozen lighting resistant decked out thugs...can't really guess if that'd take out the wiley Jurri though. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/wink.gif Also in the "if I only had a few more turns" category was my failed attempt to grab Yomi's VP...that battle would have gone quite differently if I could have got my 100% fire resistant pretender (cyclops) out there in time who was scripted to cast curse of stones. For those of you who didn't see that, I had about 20 falling fires per turn dropped on my neifel giants (a huge amount of those half-snake mages), as they got jammed in the castle gate by summer lions. Ah well, in the end I snatched no VPs. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/wink.gif Well played game all around.

The other problem with cumulative VPs - or VPs of any kind - on a large map is that a lot of people will just be too far away to do anything about the leader. I was in that boat.
I'm sure Jurri thanks you for the attempt! http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/wink.gif Seriously, though, why the diversion of effort at this moment? Were you that sure that you'd be able to take down Jurri, making the question of who owned my VP non-moot?
And don't forget, even if you neutralised my hannya with fatigue, you'd have had to deal with five fully equipped, buffed, soul vortexing dai-oni. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/happy.gif
I'd like to thank all of you for the game, and Pasha for hosting! Baalz, you were a great customer and opponent, and I salute you. YC, if you're still around, ditto - and thanks for being a gracious loser!
ETA - Baalz, if you read this before you send in your turn, could you send your pretender to Province 78? I wanna see who'd win in this battle of the titans! http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/biggrin.gif

The reason I split my efforts was because I had an army close to your border (and your VP) who would not have been able to make it to any of Jurri's VPs before the game was decided. I figured I had a pretty low chance of taking the VP (I pretty much figured on heavy fire magic, though even still that was more than I expected). I thought though that if I caught you completely unexpectedly there was a small chance you might not have much in that province (didn't know if it was your home province) and I could hold it for the turn or two just long enough to get the VP for the year...which if I had been able to capture the two VP from Jurri would have put me in the running to win the following year. If I had managed to get those two VPs from Jurri it would likely mean his back was broken given the amount of people warring with him, so at that point I'd have a year to send the bulk of my army down to engage you. That's the way I hoped it would play out anyway. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/wink.gif
I sent my pretender to 78 for fun, though I will note that some of the gear I would have equipped him with got equipped instead on a Jarls who aren't on a labs (eye shield, boots of quickness, amulent of resiliance, copper plate).

Me, I'm just happy I was able to give some significant pain to the two nations that crippled my chances : burned about 6 of Oceania's temples, and then destroyed two of Kailasa's armies after I was down to being sieged in my capitol. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/happy.gif

ah well, I been following up on this just to see how my giants would turn out... seems like they were the nearly "runner-ups". glad you enjoyed it so much, I think the game would have turned out a lot differently if my giants hadn't have gone stale for like 6 turns (due to holidays, turn confusion, net problems... you name it, I just got fed up)... giants probably lost 3 extra turns mopping up the southern vp because stales allowed them time to build forts and spread their armies out.

Thanks for the game everyone!
It turned out somewhat quicker than expected... I did have a very nice starting position with plenty of VPs and amazon-provinces nearby. Indeed, I only had to dispatch CharonJr and bribe Ygorl to attain 4 VP-provinces, which turned out to be enough in the end since I got to scoring them so soon. I had 2 extra points in the final scoring, though, so there was quite a bit of leeway.
I don't think my walls would have been breached in the very near future, Baalz: I could always kill off your non-lightning-resistant sieging force little by little and strengthen my castle-defenses by multiple castings of Call of the Winds. It was pretty fun fighting a war that I could win just by defending, definitely a different experience from the usual kill or be killed kind of war. For once, I found the expensive mountain citadels and fortified cities a blessing; usually they are but a hindrance being so expensive and taking so long to build in comparison to other forts. (Normally you only need forts to build national commanders and troops, and the characteristics of the forts are wholly irrelevant.)
Ah, but anyways, it was a fun game (although I understand some folks were surprised by the victory condition - I hope it didn't take away from their enjoyment), with a lot of formidable showings from many players. Thanks again!
