View Full Version : Killing Cheesy Interface Sounds

I finally got fed up with those asinine sounds SE5 plays whenever you click a button, open a window, or generally use the interface. To me, they make the game feel really cheesy. Thus, I made some 1 ms silence wav files to replace them. They were made by recording a null line-in device, then cutting off all but .01 s of sound in windows' sound recorder. I tried just 0 kb .wav files, but the game raised an exception on them. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/wink.gif
With these null sounds, I think my SE5 experience is an order of magnitude more fun...
I think I got all of the offending sounds, but I might have missed some here and there. If so, I can update the zips. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/happy.gif
To install the sounds, extract this file into your SE5\Sounds directory, choosing yes to overwrite:
NullInterfaceSounds.zip (http://www.spaceempires.net/files/sev/mods/NullInterfaceSounds.zip)
I've also uploaded the original sound files for easy restoration of the stock sounds:
StockInterfaceSounds.zip (http://www.spaceempires.net/files/sev/mods/StockInterfaceSounds.zip)

Turn your speakers off. In fact I didn't know SE5 had sounds until this thread.

Uhh... that's not a viable solution. It means I can't play music, or listen to the good sounds, such as in combat.
EDIT:
Whoops, I forgot the "pick up component" sounds. Uploaded revised version. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/happy.gif I left the error sound intact, since that is the only indication the game gives you if you try to put a component into the wrong type of slot...

I agree with Baal, perhaps I shouild buy some speakers just to see what it sounds like.
IF - Won't it have been a lot easier just to turn off the "Allow Sounds" option in the settings.txt file?

Again, no, because that turns off _all_ sounds... that was clearly not the goal here. I only wanted to disable the annoying interface beeps, not all sounds...

Incidentally I once replaced some of the sounds in se4 with sounds from SFB 2 and Klingon academy, stuff like the cloaking device and photon torpedoes. I suppose I could do that with SE5, if I could find the disks. I guess I can only keep it to myself as they might not look kindly to giving them out. Fyron seems to have only removed the annoying ones, I wouldn't even know where to begin to make new sounds I didn't lift from somewhere else.

And thank you for doing it. I for one am greatful for your efforts here.

Yes - I plugged those silent wavs straight in too! Good work.
