I've updated game to 1.17 and added Balance Mod . If I do quick game all the different empires are listed for me to pick from . If I do a new game were I get to pick everything { maps, empires, characteristics , so forth } I can't pull down list for empires to pick from , what am I doing wrong ? No list shows - is there a key I'm missing to activate list ?

The game unfortunately comes with no prebuilt empire files. It's fairly easy to create one, though - just start a quickstart game with the same tech and race points you intend to play with, then save your empire file from in the game! (Or build your own custom empires, like I do! http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/wink.gif)

for the AI empires just make sure that random AI empires (or whatever it's called) is on.

They generate when you start the game.

that's where the problem is - the file doesn't seem to generate - it tells me to pick a human empire but there is no empires to pick from !

As a player you make your own empire file.

so for someone dense like me ,it's not like SE4 where you call up empires and pick one for human use - in SE5 you actually have to make a empire for your use and the AI will fill in for game use

For your first game, yes. After that you can save your empire file and use that.

I think there are various good reasons why Aaron did it this way. Most of which appear to be for the benefit of modders. Well, this is my current opinion since my experience is pretty much limited to modding and testing my own mod at this point.

Don’t feel dense, or if your going to don’t feel alone! You can have a seat here with me, and SJ can share the stories of my density…

Oh!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

That’s why I didn’t see the lines! Man now I feel dense! That one was right in front of my nose the whole time.

mrscrogg, I am sending an "rar" file (159 kb) of all the "stock ais". They have been saved as zero tech point empires & I also removed the password "MASTER". Just save each empire in the "SavedEmpires" folder & you can than choose the Races you want to confront or play.

The only difference between the two games is that SE5 did not come with stock empire files. In SE4, it was usually a much better idea to make your own empire file, rather than use one of the stock ones.

Taking the other side of this I think Aaron created an additional frustration by not having base races for the player to choose from. This confounded me for a few minutes. I noodled it out because of my experience with SEIV. Someone new to the SE series is likely to be frustrated for a longer period of time. I know you told me you don't read manuals but I do, and so do a lot of folks new to a game or game type, even manuals with teeny tiny print like this one. I don't recall seeing this mentioned in the manual or covered in the tutorial. He should have included at least one stock race, and offered some comment in the manual or tutorial about creating/modifying more. It's a small thing perhaps, but one of many small things with the game that explains the negative press and scores from fan sites. At least to me.

I'll keep saying it, without this site and some of it's members (like you!) http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/wink.gif , this game would die a MOO3 like death.

Well, not being in the manual isn’t all that good; he should have at least mentioned it and/or that new players should use the quick start races. I agree with Fyron though that many of the new players in SE4 complained about the stock races. I can’t seem to recall the memories clearly enough to risk paraphrasing but I want to say the debates ran opposite these. As for us members helping to carry the game I can’t (and don’t want to) argue that either. I would like to say that the game supports itself; however, at this point there are still too many problems big and small. I think I’m painting myself into a corner but better to be honest. Members who are frustrated are going to have-to have faith that Aaron will patch the game and modders will generate toys galore to play with. All of that will make up for the problems now. That’s not a promise it’s a guarantee, just look at SE4 when it first came out to the final version and everything that was put out in between.

We might want to post these in the mods download sections here and at spaceempires.net...

I wouldn’t qualify that as a mod although I do have a section it would fall under. Still I think something as minor as default empires is not necessary. Best to just wait till other members ask for it; I really don’t see a demand to warrant the addition.

There is no longer a link to the rar, so its kind of a moot point now. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/wink.gif

I have a quick question. Can somebody give me a reason to research engines higher than level 5 other than it allows you to store more supplies? Also is there any documentation giving the statisics for a component does outside of the game?

Yeah, Components.txt.
