View Full Version : Mod Pretender: Ultimate Tyrant
Ragnarok-X

Hey,
this mod adds a new general pretender to the game, the Ultimate Tyrant.
For those that dont know him: Ultimate Tyrants are the most powerful kinds of the "Beholder" (Eye Tyrant) type creature.
Some may know them as "Evil Eyes".
He uses astral and blood magic and can usually solo provinces filled with militias only. He is very vulnerable to ranged attacks.
Add an air shield and he becomes a lot more versatile.
The pretender has 2 sprites and a extensive background, including a reference to D&D.
Have fun and merry x-mas.

Very nice. I'm working on a mod which will feature Beholders as underground cave-dwellers.

Thanks for the feedback http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/laugh.gif
Let me know once your mod is ready. I like Beholders a lot and i guess a Tyrant leading a bunch of Beholders out of the underground is just my taste ! http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/happy.gif

What I have in mind (vaguely) is Agarthans mainly using beholders for province defense. The beholders will have darkvision and fly, and they'll have the Paralyzation special ability. They'll be extremely expensive, and you'll only get one for PD-if and when we're able to modify PD, I'm hoping to make it so Agarthans get one at every 30 levels of PD. I may or may not make beholders immobile, haven't decided yet.

I thought about making the Tyrant flying as well, but decided against it. Otherwise, he would be pretty powerful with hold-hold-attack archers or hold-hold-attack rear. In addition, they levitate, they dont fly according to my info. And they arent that fast as well.
On what powerlevel do you see a normal beholder ? Same as a single heavy milita, cavalery, lamia more/less ?

They do levitate, which is where I got flying from-I want to make underground dangerous for archers, and beholders are one of the dangers. I'm also hoping that some creatures will be Underground-only, like some are Ocean-only. I think beholders are a touch more trouble than lamias. Maybe a little weaker than an unmodified Gorgon pretender, but not much weaker.

For regular beholders(i dont know a huge amount about them though) i would probably go with your pretenders stats but +2 strength, swap weakening gaze for mind burn(maybe enslave mind) and give disintigrating gaze 15an damage instead of 11 regular(well magic) damage.

For the beholder's gaze-remember they'll be quite expensive and province-immobile-I was planning on keeping the petrification gaze of the gorgon-which is extremely good, along with a bite. The anti-magic gaze would give them high MR. Prot and Def can be decent, but I think they'd have no more than 15 hp. Flying is an advantage, but it's also a disadvantage, since the beholder has to fly to it's enemies in order to attack them, and then BE attacked in order to use it's gaze. If it could sit back and snipe at enemies with disintegration and enslave mind etc. then it would be even more powerful in some ways, and not much different from an aboleth mindlord.

Only I may use this pretender, please modify accordingly!

That's true-only Tyrant is allowed to use the Ultimate Tyrant Pretender-it's got his name on it.
I'm gonna create my own version anyway for Agartha, just for balancing and theme issues. Ragnarok-X, would you mind if I possibly make use of your artwork? I can use my own if not.

No problem. If you want a modification to the existing artwork, let me know or do it yourself. I dont like the attack animations "eye" color that much. Maybe i will rework it sometime.

Thanks Ragnarok-X!
P.S. I haven't downloaded this mod yet, so I don't know what it looks like and don't have an opinion.

This mod is broken in 3.17.
Not sure why, but all the magicskill stopped working.

It's not just this mod. Apparently there's some kind of issue where, because 3.17 added so many new spellcasters, if you have too many mods enabled at once spellcasters start losing paths. I guess the number of magic paths you can have in a game is capped somehow. There's some discussion in the bug discussion thread in the main forum starting with post #612459 (http://www.shrapnelcommunity.com/threads/showflat.php?Number=612459) but there's no resolution yet.
In the meantime I would try turning off mods that you aren't using, which may make the tyrant start working again.
