The "figurehead" is taken a little bit too far, I think. The segmented look to imitate the "clinkerbuilt" design of a viking longship is much more promising. It would be more effective if it were "longitudinal" like the original clinkerbuilt ships. Would be amusing to put a solar sail on them by default (and have the race always research solar harnessing and use them). The hammer as a space station design is pretty good.

Those are neat pictures. Doing them in 3D in Moray would be tough, at least for me. It would take a good Moray person to carve the head just right

Thanks for the encouraging responses.
Dracus: That was intentional, imagine seeing that coming towards you in battle=-)
Baron: Points taken on board. I have considered going horizontal rather than vertical but I think it would just accentuate the flawed perspective. I might try to do something with it when I get to the colouring stage. As for the figurehead, I know what you mean, I think I will experiment with some smaller ones. Oh, and I always intended to put sails on, although I wasn't necessarily going to put them into the AI. I might though...
I'll use this thread to give notification of updates to the page.

A small update - I've added a prototype racial portrait. Still no colour.
Haven't had much time to work on the ships lately, but I will be doing more soon. I haven't forgotten your suggestions either, Baron.

Vikings in space? Now that's an odd idea... I like it. ;-)
Hrmmm, maybe their AI should use boarding parties and troops...

Great Idea, it's an old classic.
The ships look cool and are certainly original.
I look forward to seeing the finished result.

Yeah, I can't wait to start work on the speech files, I intend to draw heavily on the legends and Gods to create mythological metaphors for game events:
"All the things in all the worlds wept for Baldur's death. I suspect you shall not be so well mourned."
...and so on.
I also intend to make frequent and innapropriate use of the ö character=-)

Yep the Vikings used Runes, but the language when translated into latinised script contains many letter variants including the seething th/dh sound.
The tears for Baldur phrase sounds good.
"No man is so generous he will jibe at accepting. A gift in return for a gift,
No man so rich that it really gives him
pain to be repaid."
"Better not to ask than to overpledge
As a gift demands a gift,
Better not to send than to slay too many."

OK, another new update is out. Lots of new images, and quite a few replacements. I'm also showing *all* of the images so far rather than a select few.
I've also added a few sub pages:
:A "what is this?" page for ppl who see my page but know nothing about space empires.
:a history page which shows what has been changed, and when. It also has some of the old images which I discarded.
:a notes page which shows my thought processes as I work on the shipset. Thought this might be interesting / useful.
:a mod data page. Details of this in the parallel thread "Modders and shipset creators - please read".
Feedback in this thread and/or the parallel thread as appropiate will be very much appreciated.
Oh, and you'll see I have come up with 2 designs for the fast courier. I can't decide which one I prefer - please voice your opinion here.

Thanks, it could be worth a look. I've been wondering names ile what to use, since I think Norse mythology has already been used for other shipsets. I was considering a list based on different beers, or maybe "pillage", "burn", "loot" etc, but it would be hard to think of enough of those without clashing with other lists.
Please post the list or mail it to me, I'll have a look.

Hello dogscoff,
thanks for bumping this thread. I didn't know it was actually you who is doing the Viking shipset (duh, I kind of feel stupid right now). Maybe my post in the other thread sounded a little odd. I thought I was talking about a third person...
Anyway, I've looked at the preview shipset. I love it! I also vote for Fast Courier #1. (Whats a FC anyway, which mod?)
<BLOCKQUOTE><font size="1" face="Verdana, Arial">quote:</font><HR>originally posted by dogscoff (in the Spiralus PBW thread):

ANyway, permission to use it is yours as soon as it's working. I'd also love some help with the AI files, although I'm more worried about the "clever" stuff (i design files, anger files) than the spech, which I already have some ideas for.
Anyway, we're getting off topic. Can we continue this conversation on the proper thread? I'll bump it to the top of the forum for you... <HR></BLOCKQUOTE>
Well, thanks a lot for your permission. I am sorry that I can't be much of assistance with the AI files. I only have this game for about a week now and have no experience with designing AI at all (always willing to learn, though). Maybe we should ask some of the expert modders about this (suicide_junkie: HEEEEELP !). All I can offer you is mostly moral support and my opinion on things.
Maybe the small and medium freighter should look somewhat more like the big one (which looks great). Right now they look more like the warships (destroyer, light cruiser). Anyway, if I can suppport you in any way, feel free to contact me (email in profile).
Keep up the good work,

Quik..vn: Thanks for the names. Probably not enough there for a full shipset, and the copyright thing makes me a little twitchy, but it's food for thought.
Rollo: Yeah I'd love to see your images. Post them or mail me (dogscoff@altavista.co.uk). You can even have some webspace for it if you want.
Thanks for the feedback too. The fast courier, corvette etc are to be used with Devnullmod. That mod doesn't even support additional images yet, but I'm hoping it soon will.
There are details of the mods supported on the site, as well as information about how and why I made each image and more besides. It's all linked to from the top of the main viking.htm page.
Oh, and don't worry about being an SEIV newbie - by the time I get the viking images finished you'll be an old veteran. (it's taking me ages to do them all=-)

Actually, if we were really antsy about copyright, a good chunk of races and shipsets (read: Star Trek-based) would not have been posted. I put the copyright info as a CYA for the post itself, since I copied and pasted straight from the CivII file.

The ravens are a good Idea. Odin had 2 pet Ravens which brought him news. Can't remember their names though, one of them might have been Skoggi. Doesn't matter, might use them on the racial or infantry pics (on a shield or something.)

Thank you Andres,
both for your work and your interest. I guess that will be entirely up to dogscoff, since I just do the AI and dogscoff does the graphics. Just let me point out a few things:
1. The AI files are still under construction and currently in testing. I will post any changes in them in the mod archive to keep everybody updated. Current Version is 0.91, but if the Lastest changes have the desired effect, I might be comfortable enough to go 1.0 in the next update for the AI http://www.shrapnelgames.com/ubb/images/icons/icon7.gif.
2. Currently the AI uses the generic (neutral) shipset with their own flag for testing purposes. So they can be already used and included in games. Using the painted pictures you did is fine with me. As I said before, it's up to dogscoff, if he feels comfortable with this. Right now, I personally still prefer to use the generic ships, because they remind me that there is still work to be done... http://www.shrapnelgames.com/ubb/images/icons/icon12.gif.
3. The current racename is Rollvik (short for Rollos Vikings). This is just a temporary name for testing and PBM use. It is the flag and ships I use for my PBM games.I did this to avoid confusion with the official Viking shipset. I guess, if we are going to use the painted pictures, we will have to make a new racename.
4. Have you played with the AI, yet? If yes, let me know what you think. Please post only praise here and keep criticism private (email) http://www.shrapnelgames.com/ubb/images/icons/icon12.gif. Just kidding, of course...

Did you try them before or after the 0.91patch? They were way too friendly before the patch. Partly, because I did name the settings file wrong, I guess. I am still not really familiar about the diplomacy and anger stuff. That is kind of hard to test also, I think, because it depends on so many different factors. I was concentrating on the research, designs and all that. Let me know, if you notice anything else http://www.shrapnelgames.com/ubb/images/icons/icon7.gif.
Btw, Andres, I visited your website today and really love the stuff I have seen there. I noticed that some of the shipsets don't have an AI, yet. If you are willing to give a newbie AI modder a chance, maybe we can do somthing together after the Vikings are done.

Most shipsets have AI, altough many are just copied from another shipset (not all are listed in the site, something I started doing later).
But sure, you can make AI files for any of my races.

Well, I'll have a look on the anger files again, but compared to other races they shouldn't be too nice. Maybe I am missing something. Do you know, if they were at war with somebody else? That would make them nicer towards you.
One thing the AI seems to ignore, is the maximum allowed treaty parameter. I have set that to T&R, but have seen the Vikings enter military alliances and partnerships in spite of that.

I've noticed a few mistakes on the image which I'll sort out tonight. See if you can spot them all=-)
Feedback would be appreciated, especially about which courier image to use. (I've only had one or two opinions on that so far)
There is also a flag image, which I haven't posted. To see that you'll have to wait for Rollo's next AI release (soon, I believe.)

I guess it depends on your translation and/or Version of norse oral history. In mine there is no mention of a "fleugalhorn". Also, that was Thor who drank from the oceans until the tides were created. This is just a generic Viking leader somwhere in the 25th Century.

Major graphical update (all ships and units) and much better AI to work under SE4 Version1.49.
Features: extra ship pictures for special ship sizes (Battlemoon). The AI will invade planets with troops and uses some other unconventional tactics.

The broken links on the website are deliberate. I didn't want to spoil this release by making all the images available too early.
I'll be updating the website soon. Also, you may have noticed a readme.htm file in the zip alongside the readme.txt - it's a good way of viewing the shipset.
I'm hoping to update the images again before the CD burn - there's still lots of work to do.

Good news about the battlemoon. Did you look at the other thread? We are still deciding what filename to use for the battlemoon images, so wait for a conclusion on that before changing your vehiclesize.txt or you might find that your mod isn't comaptible.
There's a lot to be said for hand-drawn. Sure, 3D is great for ships, but when it comes to things like racial portraits and ground based images, I think hand drawn is best. Perhap a "hybrid" shipset would be bset.

will you be able to do any graphics within the next 24 - 48 hours. If yes, I will hold off sending in the Vikings and will mail them to Tampa on Sunday. If no, I will send them to Mephisto today, so they'll be part of the Modpack.
Up to you.
Rollo
edit: sorry to contact and bug you in this way, but I thought you might be able to reply faster than by email.

Yes! I have no time tonight but hopefully tomorrow (Saturday) morning / afternoon I will be able to colour the mining ship and maybe I can get the new large transport and new small troop coloured as well.
(Old large transport > barge and old small troop > Infantry)
And you were right, contacting me like this is a good way of getting my attention, although in future my forum time wil be greatly reduced=-(
So yes, given another 24 hours from this post I can almost guarantee at least 2 more images. Maybe 3. Maybe more?
Why can't I ever get things done on time?

Hey Dogscoff,
any more pics coming? I'll be up another hour or so. If you have any more graphical tweaks, please send them to me. I will start putting the stuff together and send it in soon. Also check your email.
Cheers,
Rollo

Just to let everyone (Especially those of you who contact me by personal email) know that my home internet connection is currently screwed http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon8.gif
&*^$!!!ing windows.
Until I get time to restore it (Looks like a re-install might be necessary) I won't be doing any web page updates, mutltiplayer (I wanted to take part in the translatlantic showdown too http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon9.gif ) or emails.
I'm surruptitiously posting this in work hours but after tomorrow the office is closed for xmas and I will be reliant on my poorly modem.

OK... new Vikings are out.
From now on, Viking releases will be split into Vikings Classic (For 1.49) and Vikings Gold for obvious reasons.
So... Vikings classic 1.00 is now available. There are some new graphics on there (the same graphics that went out on the CD) but the AI files are the same as the Last release.
Can't be arsed to upload it to the forum just now, sorry. You'll have to go to my website (See .sig file)
Later=-)

*bump*
Did anyone download this? What do you think?
I'd like some feedback on the new small troop.
