Well, peace is all in the eye of the beholder... "not shooting each other" treaties are generally what you want.

Given that you are hostile to each other, you might want to sign a ceasefire in neutral space, but still allow you to blow them out of the sky if they intrude into your space.

If things work out with that, you can extend the treaty later to cover trade, global ceasefire, and more.

There is no Cease Fire Option, what SJ means is, try to create a treaty with your enemy, just a basic one at first, one where you only have some type of non agression.

Go to Empires, press the empire you're at war with, press Send Message, select Propose Treaty from the list on the left, then use the Set Treaty Elements on the right. For a pure 'peace' treaty, just check the non-aggression field ( in all systems or in neutral space). Make a treaty name and then press ok and send the message.

Ah, non-aggression is the term, yeah.

The question really is "what is peace"?
If you avoid each other despite having no treaty, that's somewhat peaceful. If you only shoot intruders, and coexist outside, that's a little more peaceful. If you allow them to fly anywhere you don't have mines, that is even more.

I suggest "only in neutral space", mainly because you are at war right now. Do you really want to let their warships fly through your homesystem?
Treaties can be broken after all, and you shouldn't trust them yet.

The thing about the "only in neutral" space is that while, yes, you can attack their ships that come into your system, *they* can also attack you in your systems...

They can attack you in your system anyways.

The point of this is that you can shoot them down at the gates instead of letting them get into orbit of your homeworld before they declare war and glass it.

Meanwhile, you can play nice outside and even team up against a common enemy despite not trusting each other...

I can tell you are making these suggestions with PBW in mind...

Well, AIs are not trustworthy either. They'll Eorg your planets if you don't protect your borders.

I think a nessasary piece of information is that all treaties contain at least part of an implicit peace treaty.

Hmm...Didn't know that.

Narf did you ***-u-me (http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/eek.gif) that there had to be? Never had an empty treaty offer from the AI yet? Or did that problem get fixed?

You can always sign a treaty that prevents the use of biological weapons, but still have at each other like rabid wombats using regular guns.

You see I like that kind of thinking SJ. Bio weapons leave all those rotten bodies which makes the place really stink! So N-A-S-T-Y! http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/Sick.gif However if you nuke 'em there's no stink, it clears out all them ugly buildings they put up. And best of all it leaves a nice glow! And I know we all enjoy the after glow when we are done with our [i]business[/b]. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/wink.gif http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/redface.gif http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/biggrin.gif
