Description: This modification changes the look of the original SE V UI to a darker style.

Installation:

1. ( Optional ) Backup the "UI" folder inside ...\SpaceEmpiresV\Pictures
2. Move the DarkUIMod.rar archive to your main SE V folder and extract it, answer yes to overwrite files if prompted.
3. Play the game with any mods.

Repeat step 2 and 3 with any mod update archives.

Game patches will override some UI elements, so you should reinstall the mod after installing an update.

The download is 24'ish MB.

Have you considered making the UI more transparent as well?

It's certainly possible. I'm not sure where I'd use it, though. Got any examples of where you think it'd be fitting?

Any plans to reduce the "bubbliness" of the buttons? Such would go along with the darker theme, I think.

Yeah, I'm trying to come up with something 'flatter'. Working on the small blue ones for now, not sure if I should do something about the larger buttons yet( i.e. "Close" and the likes ).

What % of the UI files are included? I was curious to see how big an UI mod would be...

130 of 180'ish MB total. They compress pretty well, so probably around 30mb for the entire thing.

Hi there,

This looks great, but I am having a problem. I'm running an existing game with v1.20 and Balance Mod 1.02.

I installed the Dark UI 1.03 and the 1.04 update. The main screen looks fine, but when I browse my Ships List, I get a CTD with a 'stream error'. Reverting my Pictures\UI folder removes the problem once again. Has anyone else seen this?

I hope I can get to the bottom of it - this UI is a great improvement!

Oooh, this is in fact a known issue: for some reason saving the main UI parts directly from photoshop would cause the game to crash with a stream error upon entering the screens, so I had to start copy-pasting into paint and saving them from there, which removed the problem. Since all files should be saved correctly, I'm not sure why you'd be having problems. Let me check it out.

Alright, think I've found it. Looks like running the game in higher resolutions than 1280 x 800 will crash it when opening certain screens with the UI installed. I'll see what I can do, but it's sort of annoying since I've no idea what's causing the crash.

Problem fixed, just re-download the 1.04 update and install it again.

Try saving as "OS/2" format in Photoshop. The "Windows" format makes weird file headers that SE4/5 does not understand.

Thanks Fyron, that should save me some extra work. Strange how it only seem to matter with the full-screen UI parts, though.

Aha! Everything is fine for me now with 1.05. That was a quick turnaround! Thanks for putting your time into this, I really like the results.

Incidentally I spotted something else you can update if you are striving for perfection! http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/wink.gif On the Designs screen, when you select "Create Design", the sub-menus between there and the main design screen are not skinned as of 1.05. It's the smallest of small points since you see those so rarely, but I'll bring it to your attention in case you're unaware.

I would have posted this last night, but once I confirmed 1.05 was working I was "forced" to play some more turns of my game to deal with an incursion into one of my systems... before you know it, it's 2AM and I had to go straight to bed!!! I'm sure you understand http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/happy.gif

Strange, they should be. You did reinstall the mod after installing the SE 1.25 patch? I'll have a look into it at any rate, as I need to repack the 1.05 version.

Hi again,

After I upgraded to SEV 1.25 and reinstalled the UI everything is spot on this time. Thanks again, I much prefer your changes over the defaults. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/happy.gif

I'm sorry: I only deleted my own post( following yours ) about the update, since it was no longer relevant. I appreciate your thoughts and feedback.

The next update is coming along more slowly, as I've been wasting alot of time. I'll see if I can have it ready in a day or two.

Where did that come from? I think anyone enjoys a little praise for their work. Lets be good to each other in this sub-forum. Take any disagreements to the main forum and give those moderators the headache! http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/biggrin.gif http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/eek.gif LOL http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/eek.gif http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/biggrin.gif

Edited: Is this the one you are talking about?

I just noticed this- Nice touch with the Babylon 5 council chamber pic for the Alliance screen. Still looking to see if anything else pops up. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/happy.gif

Hah, yeah, there's also one in the planet construction screen. Been trying to find some relevant and fitting sci-fi pictures to replace the others, but it's proving more difficult than I expected; especially to prevent it from feeling 'out of place'.
