I keep seeing this notion on this board, but I killed several AI formation leaders over the weekend, and paid attention - it didn't slow them down one bit. In fact, they broke formation and therefore were better able to mob-attack.

It's a random "feature". It doesn't have to be the fleet leader, but often is. I sent a comment about this to MM a while ago, but I haven't been able to nail anything down as to why the heck it happens, other than an AI ship going BOOM.

What happens, however, I do know. You fire on an AI ship, and it explodes. When that happens and you hit end turn, the turn number remains the same and you take the turn again, effectively giving you double firepower for a turn (or cutting down the reload on missiles nicely).

Interesting. I noticed another thread here where folks mention losing a turn themselves, so it doesn't seem to be limited to the AI.

I don't think I've ever seen this myself, though. Hmmmm.

I always assumed it was the leader being destroyed caused the AI to freeze. It does seem very random, I've gone 15-20 combats without seeing it then will see it 2-3 times in a row.
