I have had several ships involved in several space battles but still have an experience level of Novice (0%) How many engagements does it take to start gaining experience ??
Also, what is the experience scale in steps ??

Many thanks.

This is a tough one to answer.

I think that to get any experience in a battle, you have to shoot at and actually hit enemy ships with direct fire weapons. I know that missile-only ships can fight all year and never get any experience.

but it appears that shooting down enemy seekers with your point-defense systems does count, and will earn you experience.

The experence system is not very good at all. It could use some work to make it a little more realistic.

PD ships do appear to get exp from shooting down fighters and seekers. I believe missile armed ships do gain experience also, just very slowly. The relative sizes of the ships also seem to make a difference from what I've seen, a smaller ship seems to be more likely to gain or gains more experience from destroying a larger ship and the opposite appears true to me also.

I have a couple of ships at "Legendary" status; and every time one of them uses direct-fire weapons to destroy an enemy ship, experience goes up by 1%. I haven't figured out whether ships gain a full 1% for each fighter/satellite/seeker destroyed, but I know you get experience for it. (In fact, one trick is to build a PDC-heavy ship, use it to destroy lots of seekers to get experience up, then retrofit to another design; the experience stays even when the weapons change...)
