So I started a PBW with some friends a little while back and discovered a small galaxy with 4 people is a very short term game, where I had initially been planning for a more mid-term game.

We're playing Stock v1.20 and the main reason I'm doing well enough is that I invested in mines and have been pumping them out like crazy. The problem is one of the players has lvl 9 meson cannons and is absolutely decimating my ships. Right now I'm trying to catch up with Meson canons and Phased-Energy Weapons, but I'm still a few tech levels behind.

Any suggestions?

Well, you could hit him with some missiles (from outside of his weapons range, hopefully) in the short term, until he redesigns his fleets with more point defense... you should be able to kill off a decent part of his current fleet, and future ships won't be quite so deadly against your direct fire warships (less guns, more PD).

For the most part, Stock does not have many viable weapons, and if you fall behind in researching them you get burned hard.

The problem I should mention is that I started off the game focusing on missles, and it appears that in stock even lvl 1 PD is enough to trash my missles, so as long as he has 1 PD cannon my missles don't do squat.

Ah. That would be a problem then... stock missiles are really only good temporarily as a surprise weapon.

I suppose you'll just need to catch up with his blaster tech, at least to get the same range so you can fight back in combat.

The only defense that's holding me at this point is Large mounts on weapons platforms.

Atrocities Strategy For Success:

1. Don't play against players that are better than you.

Haha thanks. I'll keep that in mind. I don't think it's so much a concept of better is that my strategy wasn't the best choice with the size of galaxy we chose. Live and learn I suppose.

Live, er...

You'll probably want to move on to mods soon; balancemod is good, since it is stocklike, but better.

Balance mod will be our next game, but we're going to wait for PBW to patch up to v1.03.
