Manuk - Arcoscephale
cupido2 - Atlantis

Alternate: Reay
Nation Selection: Once the game is full I will randomly assign nations out. When signing up players may request up to TWO nations they DON’T want. These are nations you DO NOT want to play. Sign up in this thread.
After nations are assigned I’ll need you to email (or PM if you want to keep it private) your pretender password. This is because I’ve had issues with the Master Password working in the past AND so we can give your nation to another human player if you disappear. This is not optional.
Once I have your password I’ll send you the ip/port of the server where you can upload your pretender. Once everyone is uploaded I’ll send out an email listing everyone’s email contact for diplomacy purposes and add you to the game turn email notification list (unless you specify otherwise). Then the game starts.
Quickhost will be enabled. The first 12 turns will be set to have a 24 autohost – so expect to do at least a turn a day for the first couple weeks. After that the timer will increase to 48 hours though it is hoped that players will normally still be able to play every 24 hours, with the occasional missed day. As turns take longer in late game this might increase further. As players get eliminated we can be more flexible with extensions and extended absences, but not in the first few weeks.
A small version of the map we will be using is here (http://67.66.187.69/civproject/sos/radiance.jpg). The map has been tweaked to ensure (hopefully) that all players that start on land have at least four land neighbors and all players that start at sea have 3 sea neighbors. I have also tweaked the ocean connections so that separated sea provinces connect to each other across straits (hence all the seas are linked). This map is a result of lots of random generation and a wee bit of photoshopping.
Players who wish to surrender (resign) should simply let me know so we can find a replacement or turn the nation to AI. If you will be unavailable for longer than a few days please let me know. Failing to do you turn twice a in a row without letting us know will get you put on AI. If I think you are missing too many turns (e.g. 3 out of the last 6) I will put you on AI. Once I am eliminated (*coughisuckcough*) I’ll rely on the remaining players to tell me when something needs done with the game.

Nations are assigned on the front page! Now I need an email sent to velusion(@at@)sbcglobal.net with your pretender password (or you can PM me if you want to keep your email private). Once I get that Ill share the server IP/port with you and you can upload your pretender file.
Looks like we got a good mix of inexperienced and experienced players.
I've never played Pythium before but they share some troop similarities to Ermor (which I'm familiar with) so hopefully I won't be too lost.

So the server isn't overloaded come start time you can manually get the rather large map (6 meg zipped) now here (http://67.66.187.69/civproject/sos/radiance.zip).
Unzip the .tga file to your dominions3\maps folder.
This isn't required but I would suggest it.

Yes. The only time it will prompt you is if you have created multiple pretenders for the same nation/era. In that case it will ask you which one you want to use.
Just hit disconnect... you're ready to go. I'll make an annoucement once the game is started.

I know this isn't an "RP" game, but from time to time (If I last long enough that is)I will post small stories for the nation I'm playing. I do this for the same reason I play music : it is as much for the audience's enjoyment as it is for my own creative outlet. So while I write this solely for the pleasure of writing, I also hope some people will actually enjoy it. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/happy.gif
Deep within the effluvium mists of the swamps of C'tis there is a valley; a valley filled with the ancient and crumbling ziggurats of entombed Lizard Kings. All is still in this Valley of Death, no wind stirs it's reed-filled wrens. Even the constant droning of insects and other swamplife seems muted here. The only person - and don't ever make the mistake of calling him that to his face - that can be seen in this early morning backdrop is Shagruh'Kahn, Lizard Captain of the first regiment. Despite his heavy plate curaiss, he sluices through the stagnant pools with ease. A falchion hangs heavily from his side, his shield slung over his left shoulder tapping a soft *rap* on his armored back. He was a large lizardman, even by C'tis standards. He stalked towards one of the ziggurats, his yellow eyes intent on his destination. There tomb of Ignokt.
While not as majestically big as other tombs in the valley, this one was no less important. More than five centuries before, Ignokt had ruled a cult of Sauromancers that became the most powerful cult C'tis had seen. So powerful in fact that many of the entombed kings in this valley kept Ignokt around as their most trusted advisor. Ignokt was privy to all kingdom affairs and his success was seen as a very direct threat to the preistly sect that usually acted in advisory roles for the king. In deed, many viewed Ignokt as being the true king, since so often his ideas became Kingdom decrees. Despite many attempts on his life, Ignokt sat at the side of four successions of kings, his presence often the only constant in the fratricide that followed the oft untimely death of one ruler or another. But as he aged, Ignokt realized his power would soon cease with his death and so began preparations to return once his mortal shell ceased its functions of living. That was two hundred years ago. And that was why Shagru'Kahn came here now.
Shagru'Kahn was not surprised to see the tomb door opened nor was he surprised to see Khre'el-abubal inside. The king-priest was kneeling in the water that, even in here, seemed to cover all the surface of the kingdom. Many saw this as a good omen and fervently prayed for the spread of swampland to cover the earth. Khre'el-abubal seemed entranced before the sarcophagus at which he knelt, his purple robes swaying gently with his body as he chanted meditatively. Shagru'Kahn paused in the tomb doorway, absent-mindedly snatching up a foot long reptile that had scurried within his reach. He tore it's small body in two between his poweful jaws and swallowed the morsel in one gulp. For the first time, Khre'el-abubal took notice of the captains presence.
"It is almost time," the king-priest croaked dryly over his shoulder. Shagru'Kahn grunted in reply.
"But there are many who will not be pleased by this occurence," Khre'el-abubal continued. "The surrounding nations will attempt to stop his return."
Shagru'Kahn spat in contempt.
"Let them try. I've slain more numbers of their kind than I can remember. Their bodies will be swallowed by the waters of C'tis, decaying within her pools, giving it more life."
The captain thought of those surrounding 'peoples'- and he used that term very loosely - as a nuisance at the very least, as vermin meant for destruction at the very best. Just thinking of those 'humans' with their soft, pink flesh and their crunchable, sweet-marrow filled bones-
Shagru'Kahn stuffed the last half of swamp reptile into his now salivating gullet and swallowed once.
"He will come again," he stated further,"And when he does, I've no doubt that he willreward those who faithfully attended him before his revival."
Khre'el-abubal nodded and very nearly smiled, as near as his reptilian features would allow anyway.
"Yesss," he said softly, trailing his 's',"There is no doubt that his return is imminent. No doubt at all."

I mean, wouldn't you feel better attacking me if you thought the C'tissians were violent meat eaters who would gladly eat the people in your lands if given the chance? http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/wink.gif

The land of webs, fortune, and solitude, Fortu's blessed sanctum, has suprisingly been violated, and at such an early stage of this new era. Another nation has dared to assume a simple assassination attempt would go unnoticed, or unpunished (as witnessed by the would be assassin's death). While the lowly nation may not be revealed at this time, Fortu now knows whose lands he covets for his future playground.

I have to be the worst Dom player ever. Having SORELY misjudged the strength of neighboring indies, my beautiful lil' army of 70 or so troops gets wiped by them. Why? you may be asking (while laughing). Because, while I did notice that elephants were amongst their number, they were like, 3rd on the list of units, leaving me to believe that they had perhaps one or two and that the bulk would be militia and slingers.
Boy was I wrong!
I soon found myself against no less than 20 elephants, who proceeded to dance a jolly jig on my heavy troops, city guard, and swamp guard. My wonderous army, smashed into lizard jelly before my disbelieving eyes.
Mmmmm.....jelly.
Anywhos, I thought I would tell everyone, because I'm a masochist and enjoy pain. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/happy.gif

I share your pain.
Recently, I was rushed and crushed by massed elephants. I was playing LA Ulm and LA Patala was my nemesis.
When I say crushed, I do MEAN crushed, he conquered my capital, 20+ elephants trampled over my dozen black templars, 100+ crossbows/archers (all set to fire at large monsters btw), 30 infantry and 25 PD. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/frown.gif
Now thats pain...
Oh yea, Dom 3 just to be cruel and to add insult to injury by giving me a hero the next turn and a free fortress the turn after. All this by turn 13...

Shagru'Kahn was furious.
No. Check that.
He was beyond furious. There were not enough C'tissan curses to adequately describe the foul temper the newly anointed Lizard Lord was feeling. Not even his new harem of females could cool his now boiling blood. (Yes, an entire harem. Advancement within the ranks of the C'tis army had its perks.) He could not stop thinking of the blood and mud stained soldier that had been brought into his chambers, near death. But not so close that he could not tell his message: of the utter defeat of the First Battalion of the Grand Army. The neighboring province had resisted (all softies - as Shagu'Kahn called humans - had a habit of resisting) and they had fielded elephants -ELEPHANTS!!- the dying soldier was able to spit out.
Well, it wasn't even close. The army simply wasn't equipped to deal with such large creatures. Shagru'Kahn was sure the soldier was going to ramble on and on in this manner so he ended the discussion.
With a knife.
Buried to the hilt in the soldier's bottom jaw.
Not even this simple act of violence brought Shagru'Kahn any pleasure. He was so livid that he stalked out of his marble house,by now warm from the morning sun, without even bothering to throw on an under-shirt. While to humans such as us this may not seem a big deal, it was quite shocking to the reptilian citizenry of the bustling streets of C'tis.
The anger Shagru'Kahn felt had sent his blood rushing furiously throughout his body, making him seem to swell and grow larger. The scales covering his body had by now taken on an almost kaleidoscope effect of colors, different hues shifting with the sunlight reflecting off his skin. All of this was very similiar to the coming of age breeding mannerisms of virile young lizards. Most of the males he passed turned their heads to avoid eye contact; a few growled menacingly in their throats while pulling their mates closer to them. Many of the females also took notice, their nostrils flairing wide as he passed. More than a few embarrassingly slipt into the nearest enclosure to lay an egg. Anyother time, this would have made Shagru'Kahn's day.
Just not now.
The bustling crowds seemed to part before him of their own volition, as if his anger were pushing path ahead of him. He made a straight course to the High Holy Temple in the heart of C'tis. Once there, no guard dare stop him. His clawed feet clacked menacingly down the high arching marble hallways. He pushed open the antechamber doors leading to the Holy Conclave Chambers. Khre'el-abubal, prophet of the Most High Ignokt, spread his arms in greeting. Shagru'Kahn was too hot to bother with the proper formalities.
"A disturbing report from the front ,Prophet. Funny you did not forsee it coming."
Khre'el-abubal smiled (or seemed to, very hard to tell with reptilian features) and ignored the slight on his holy office.
"A minor set back Brother Kahn."
"Minor!" Shagru'kahn practically choked with rage. "I hardly call the decimation of the First Battalion MINOR!!" His voice echoed loudly and the hierodule priestess (being a prophet had its perks as well) crept back into the adjoining back room. Khre'el-abubal allowed the Lizard Lord to seethe before him for a bit.
"Finished yelling?" the prophet asked. Shagru'Kahn could only shake his head, muttering. "Good, because I have news that will make your message feel like a mere stubbing of the toe."
Shagru'Kahn looked perplexed up at his superior. "How-"
"SILENCE!!"
The prophet stood quite suddenly and Shagru'Kahn took an involuntary step back. It was Khre'el-abubal who appeared angry now.
"Your lack of respect will not be tolerated. You WILL remember your place!"
An overwhelming sense of awe swept over the Lizard Lord, along with the realization of just how much he had overstepped his bounds. He dropped heavily to his knees, head bowed to the ground. He had never prostrated himself to anyone before, and did not know why he would now. Something...was different.
"Forgive me." Shagru'Kahn did not believe he had said such words before. Now Khre'el-abubal didn't just smile, he grinned openly.
"You feel it, don't you, though you can't quite place what has changed, hmm?"
"No, my lord," Shagru'Kahn breathed.
"I am no longer your - sole - master."
Shagru'Kahn dared a glance up.
"Rise brother," the prophet continued, lifting his own head to the heavens, "Today is a new era for our kingdom. Today, Ignokt, Warrior Against the Sun, God of Many Names, Lord of this World, Prince of Courage and King of Terror, has awakened!"

And yet, this magical occurence is at the far end of the peninsula, because completely cutting this nation off from the rest of the world are wild forests filled with aggressive goat men.
Clashes between the two nations abound, as the Caelumites flutter delicately from battlefield to battlefield while the near unstoppable hordes of white centaurs march steadily upon the caelumite capitol.
It is now while the Pangaeans are locked in combat mortal with the Caelumites that both are at their weakest...

The half men of pangaea are greatly offended at seeing their beloved forests ravaged by the strange flying beasts with the frozen armor and frozen hearts. The blood spilled in the forests awakens the wrath of the ancient Paniis and all kind of dormant champions of the forest flock to pangaea's defense. Shagru'Kahn stared out across the expanse of the battlefield and wondered to himself, how did it all go wrong? His thoughts leading up to this penultimate battle often revisited the day that the Prophet, Khre'el-abubal, first told him of the awakening of Ignokt. At that time, the holy king priest had asked him if he felt something...different. And indeed, he had. But he knew now that what he felt was markedly different from what Khre'el-abubal had felt. The prophet had felt a change, perhaps a new golden age, for the kingdom of C'tis. He wished he felt the same. It took awhile, but Shagru'Kahn finally felt he had the word to describe the cold knot in his stomach.
He felt deceived.
He also knew that he was the only one to feel this way. Everyone, from the highest born noble to the most common of commoners was swept up in the euphoria of Ignokt's coming. No one questioned, like Shagru'Kahn did privately, why this 'god' spent all of his time locked in the study of the High Palace. Why this 'god' never saw any portents of impending battles. And did Shagru'Kahn mention that this 'god' looked like a corpse that had been left too long in the desert? All of this he noticed and yet spoke not a word, trusting in the knowledge of his superiors. Secure in the thought that others wiser and more capable knew better than he, as his life time of military training had conditioned him. And now...this.
An ocean dwelling race of creatures had been steadily invading C'tis borders for months. Kahn did the best he could with what he had. But his pleas for more troops seemingly went unheard. And now, here the enemy was, at the very doorstep of the city and still no sign of 'The Great Ignokt'. At least he had been allowed to field all available troops. But even this brought little comfort, as the enemy had easily twice his number. Shagru'Kahn was furious to see several regiments of 'softies' mixed in with the enemies forces. The surrounding humans had resisted from the very beginning and the lizard lord, had he had his way, would have simply put them to the sword and been done with it if he hadn't been stymied by his own superiors. Still, with a little luck, he thought, this could go well for him.
Besides his normal light infantry and his own handpicked squads of swamp guard, several battalions of heavy infantry and city guard were at his disposal as well. Several Marshmasters were there as well to lend magical might to his steel. He had also coerced the priestly order into opening the Serpent Pits and many large, sacred serpents slithered languidly among the troops. The mere sight of them made his heart swell with pride. Here was the living representation of C'tis. Too bad the ruling class had turned on the old traditions and preoccupied themselves with necromantic arts instead.
Ah well, Shagru'Kahn thought, no use complaining now.
A low but still audible shout from across the way, repeated down the enemies line, signalled the start of hostilities. Kahn barked out his own commands to advance and his officers shouted them in response. The two armies slowly marched toward eachother. First blood went to the invaders as the thin whine of missile fire riddled the ranks of the lizardmen infantry.
"Shields up you dogs!" Kahn shouted.
His troops advanced more slowly, more arrows peppering their ranks as they closed with the human light infantry that marched toward them. At thirty yards, the humans suddenly printed forward, hurling javelins. The heavier weight of the javelins broke through the lighter shields of the skirmishers, skewering them to the ground. The field was quickly becoming slick with the gore of battle. wit ha collective shout, Kahn's light infantry hurled their javelins in return, more than a few finding their mark.
With the smell of blood in his nostrils, Shagru'Kahn lept forward, shouting for his troops to charge now. The long, loping strides of the lizard men closed the gap quickly, taking the humans a little by surprise. Bodies clashed and the air was filled with shouts and magical bursts of energy and bright crimson blood. Kahn lingered near the front, yelling encouragement. He shoved his way forward between the spear thrusts of the two mortally locked armies. A pink face would flash into his view and he would chop visciously with his falchion. An arm here and another slash, always steadily advancing as he hacked and slashed forward. A clumsy spear thrust was easily turned by his shield and he buried his sword into the skull of the offending human. An eternity passed and still he tore a bloody swath of destruction through his adversaries. He could feel the surge of momentum and when the humans finally broke and ran, Kahn was the first to shake his sword in blood-soaked triumph, roaring to the heavens. The feeling was short lived as the tactics of the enemy soon became clear. As the human infantry routed, human archers resumed firing, cutting down many in their premature celebration. Shagru'Kahn had just enough sense to raise his own battered shield to protect himself when he heard the rumble of advancing cavalry.
Trident knights, the centaurs of the sea, came thundering forward. The sun glinted off their burnished barding and wickedly sharp tridents. Ichtasatyr troops followed in their wake and for the first time in his life, Shagru'Kahn felt the inevitability of his own mortality. His own troops were worn down from fighting the humans and these fresh reinforcements were simply too much.
Shagru'Kahn, in his pragmatic simple thinking, steeled what resolve was left within him and, shouting in defiance of the odds against him, lept full force into the oncoming wave of invaders.
From the city walls, Khre'el-abubal saw the figure of Shagru'Kahn confront two charging trident knights, their weapons lifting him bodily into the air and then crashing before them, broken forever. To bad, he thought. Kahn was one of the good ones. He would have lept into the mouth of the void for the good of C'tis and had essentially just done that very thing now. But now was not the time to be idle. Because while Shagru'Kahn might have thought himself alone in questioning the mantle of godhood claimed by Ignokt, Khre'el-abubal felt the same.
The Sauro-Lich was too involved in study and too late, Khre'el realized that was because magical study and administration were all Ignokt really knew. Granted, escaping the void and cheating death was quite impressive but not necessarily an edict for godhood. The former prophet quickly made his way through the now deserted city, all but the soldiery leaving the doomed city behind. Khre'el had much the same idea. Let these aquatic usurpers have that shriveled husk of a god, Ignokt. Passing through the water grates that emptied into the wider and untamed swamps, he climbed into a small canoe he had previously hidden and set out for the heart of the swamp. Once he looked back, as a reverberating concussive blast caught his attention. Each blast was accompanied by different hues of flashes, coloring the now dying light of the sky. Whatever hell Ignokt had unleashed on his enemies, Khre'el knew it would not be enough. He cut a lonely figure, his paddle dipping softly into the water, as the swamp slowly swallowed him in it's ever present mists.
Months from now, the miasma of C'tis will recede. The surrounding provinces will slowly revert to their original arid landscapes. And it will almost seem as if C'tis had never been.
Almost.

Spectator mode won't happen because this gives away crucial information about the players. You could ask Velusion about the master password, though. I don't know if the players will agree with it (and I doubt it), but it would be very cool if you could keep up your short stories, maybe by writing about things that are easily visible to all the players anyway (pretender awakenings, global enchantments, really big changes in the graphs) without giving away too much information.

Currently, if you want to do a turn in part without uploading it to the server, the only method is to connect, load a turn, quit game without saving, then open it locally - through 'play an existing game'. As long as you play locally, you can give orders and save & quit without uploading it to the server. Once you are finally done, end turn/save and quit, go network -> connect to server and your turn gets uploaded.

Hmmm... where to begin. Well we could begin with the proclamation Mictlan made (to all in this era of false gods, I would assume), that went something like - "The Lawgiver has declared that the men of Machaka are not human, having tainted their blood with the ichor of vermin. We have declared holy war blah blah blah" and so on. Yet was the Lawgiver present, or did he send his followers to the slaughter? Of course he wasn't present, he was too busy sleeping. Fortu, Prince of Volcanoes, god of Might, God of THIS World, King of Courage, was prepared (having awakened from his dark sleep long ago), and was already building his empire.
The proclamation was followed by an attack of great numbers, and resistance was immediately encountered, outside the castle walls on open ground. Fire was the theme, on both sides. First Machaka ignited their arrows, hoping to cause major damage to the enemy, then Mictlan does the same. Machaka was not worried, not at this point. But then fire was falling from the sky, appearing over his troops in sporadic fashion, burning spiders and warriors alike. And then it happened again. And again! How much fire could Mictlan throw? A lot, it seems. Machaka was launching bolts of magma at the enemy, and even giant flares were seen hitting the Mictlan troops, all while flaming arrows continued to hit the enemy force. But Machaka's fire was no where near the intensity of Mictlan's. Wolves were called from the forest edges to attack the enemy, hoping to distract and confuse, and even lightning was thrown into the troops, fired from a great bow wielded by a firbolg. But numbers appeared to be the answer to this battle - 600+ troops against 400+ troops. In the end Machaka did not have the numbers, and retreated into the country side (leaving the defenders in the castle to watch for sappers and prepare for a siege).
But Fortu is not worried, he has faith in his followers. Besides, the war has just begun. And he is pissed. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/mad.gif

Our scouts report a truly epic battle to our south. The forces of the spider riders march, drawn up in front of their false god to relieve the siege of their capital. A much larger Mictlan host encamped there marshals to meet them, though over half their number are all but naked slaves. But what is this? Apparently the large flock of turkeys accompanying Mictlan are not food stock, but sorcerers! They quickly form a huge communion while the fire priests enchant the archers with fire aether.
The initial volley of burning arrows inflict significant casualties in the weak, human host from Matchaka their feeble bodies charring from the mild fire. Nonplussed, the spider riders respond in kind and clouds of spinning blades fell among the loin cloth clad Mictlans as they also felt the sting of weak flesh being cleansed by the flame of burning arrows. The huge, terrible spiders charged forward towards ranks of trembling slaves. As the heavily blessed jaguar warriors ran towards their ominous jaws, the turkey communion finished its power ups, and the fire priests unleashed a pleasing warmth from the skies charring many a spider.
The spiders fell upon the Mictlan infantry with such terrible hunger that even the mighty Jaguar Warriors were seen to tremble as molten rocks rained down among the slaves. This was short lived however as the turkey communion began to rain much, much larger burning rocks from the heavens all among the Matchaka sorcerers, sending bodies flying hundreds of feet into the air. Boulder after boulder fell from the sky and rivers of fire poured down as unbelievable punishment was meted out to the spider riders. It seemed that this would be a fairly one sided battle as the Matchaka forces quickly dwindled. Then Fortu finished his battle enchantments and strode forward.
The mighty Scorpion King bellowed his fury and charged down the battlefield. Not a mortal present did not tremble as this terrifying godling barreled into the fray, surrounded by a burning ring and regenerating any wound to make it through his thick carapace. He drove into the Mictlan forces, heedless of the giant rocks falling from the sky, any one of which would have squished even his mighty form like the half bug he was. The Mictlan slaves had no stomach for this nightmare turned flesh and broke, leaving naught but archers between this burning manifestation of vengeance and the Mictlan mages who were now mostly too exhausted to cast spells.
Then, what is this? Tonatiuh, the prophet of Mictlan invoked a mighty Word of Power and all present watched in amazement as a star from the sky slowly grew into a burning, astral boulder twenty feet in diameter that drove straight from heaven into the paralyzed Fortu’s chest, destroying all trace of him.
Seeing the Matchaka army devastated, Baalz The Everburning, voice of the true god has decreed the time of the spider riders at an end, and hereby withdraws acknowledgment of them as a nation. Our forces move to annex the now unclaimed territories to our south. Mictlan has earned the right to spoils of war, and may claim what territories they may, but we advise them to respect the border we will shortly share. We hereby cede the underwater provinces formerly belonging to Matchaka to our starspawn neighbors in a gesture of goodwill, we will respect our shores as a boundary between our peoples that we may live in peace.
So speaks Baalz, The Everburning

Are we going to run the turn (since we are two hours past), or has there been some kind of extension for someone?

How come I had a stale turn?
There was 38 hrs left to host when I went bed last night, so I was going to do my turn in the morning. This was when I checked the server.
I wake up to find I had a stale turn. So what clock are we working too?
Velusion
March 18th, 2007, 04:17 AM
The server restarted (was down for about 5 min) yesterday due to a power failure, hence restarting the clock. I didn't notice it until I got back from work tonight myself and saw my emails asking me to host and read the forum.
It was actually about 56 hours between hosts. Not sure what the precedence is but I just forced the turn rather than have it go into the next day. If most people think I shouldn't have done that I can revert back. I was caught between people waiting the turn to host on schedule and the chance someone didn't realize 48 hours were almost up http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/frown.gif
I really wish there was a way to for the server to remember when the last hosting occurred, rather than time it to when the server starts. If I do happen to find out prior and change the timer I have to make sure and be around after it hosts to set the timer back or it might go too early...
Since we are at war now as penance I'll not move my armies this turn if we don't revert... I know it isn't he same as a stale... http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/frown.gif

All this is fair enough Velusion and as long as you do not move your armies for 1 turn then I am not bothered about rehosting. I think I am going down this game anyway, just want to give you a few decent battles before I do... http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/happy.gif http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/wink.gif
I knew the game had reset, I generally view this as a nice little break.
Can we have a definite rule on this please? Is the game ran to the server clock (like every other game I am in) or the thread clock? Then there's no misunderstanding in the future. I assume which ever you deciede will apply to tempest which I am in as well and has 2 clocks.

Actually this is what caused the problem. The server stats page was accurate. The reason it showed you missing a turn is because your turned in your turn over 48 hours ago from the last hosting, so it assumes you missed a turn. It can't take into effect that the server was reset.
Unless the reset happens often I'll just let the timer naturally expire from now on unless I hear a big outcry now.

Well, that's pretty crappy. Everyone should know that Manuk (Arcoscephale in this game) does not honor his treaties. After agreeing to a three turn notification NAP he has attacked without warning. Giving him the benefit of the doubt I asked him if he had forgotten we had the agreement and his response was:
"Yeah, I forgot, sorry.
But you didn't answer my request either. So I will stop my advance for 1 more turn but that's it."
FWIW, his request was that I stop my already in progress attack on Machaka. I hate to be the kind of guy who spreads dirt on somebody else, but nobody should negotiate with Manuk in good faith. He has used our NAP to build up a commanding research lead then attacked as soon as I committed my troops elsewhere. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/frown.gif

Hey man, I just think it's crappy to sign a NAP then break your word. It's not a matter of attacking me at an inconvenient time, its a matter of going back on your word...what's the point of signing the treaty? Had I realized you were not a man of your word and I needed to defend my border with you I would have deployed my troops differently. You took advantage of the fact that I trusted what you promised - that I would have a few turns to prepare for an attack from you.

Usually in most of these sorts of games I play you have to backstab someone at one at some point... though IMHO I would only risk it to completely clinch a victory or as a desperate move because you are about to be eliminated.
You have to take into account the other player might hold a grudge and retaliate unreasonably and your reputation will get soiled if you do it for anything other than to finish off the game.
Of course if Manuk goes on to win the game and avoids being "marked" in future games he probably made the right move... IMHO that is.

Or you could just be a man about it and admit that the reason Atlantis, Agartha, et al, are carving up Ermor like an apple pie right now is because you played poorly.
There is no rule in the rule book against breaking a treaty. You got pwned, dude.
I'm not saying that what you say above isn't true. It mostly is. But a master wargamer does not whine about his fate, even when he gets back-stabbed. There is certainly no need for you to become the neighborhood finger-ponter/tattle-teller about it. Reputations will become known over time whether or not you put in extra effort.
Take it as a sign of respect, Frank. They do you like that because they know they have to. Chalk it up in the loss column and move on.
We all play by the same rule book. It's all there in black and white. Drawing attention to one's losses is not necessarily the most glorious method of promoting one's reputation.

Baalz The Everburning has called for a cleansing against the oathbreakers. They shall be eliminated down to the last squalling child, their towns razed, their fields salted, and their libraries burned. There shall be naught but waste where once a nation stood. We offer the following to all we are currently engaged in hostilities with - a one sided three turn non aggression agreement. We will not move on anyone else's territories until at least three turns after the oathbreakers have been eliminated so long as our borders are respected. This is a one time offer to those we currently war with, and the only thing necessary to secure it is to not attack us for as many turns as you wish to maintain it. Take this opportunity to build up your armies, or war on other fronts, or ignore it and continue to attack the nation of Abyssia.
Furthermore, for any and all who loath oathbreakers as I do, or to those who have a mercenary's heart I proclaim that I will pay well for any offensive rituals that are rained down on the people of two faces. Our nation is rich in magic gems and forging abilities, and we will make it worth the while of any who will aid us in rebuking those who have no honor. Let the worms yearn for the cooler fires of the hell their souls will soon be cast into.

Anyone actually interested in the truth read the middle-way thread. Franks just a bad loser, I did NOT BREAK ANY PACT with him. Frank hates losing, no doubt he will spit his dummy out again at some future point when he is losing again or someone gets the better of him. He has already done it in several MP game threads.
I think its better if you simply accuse the nation of being a backstabber NOT a player. Otherwise you risk the thread being closed by forum moderators should it get out of hand. Remember people this is a GAME, not an excuse for personal attacks on people.

All I want to say here is that I think it makes both of you look bad when you carry things over from an old game and hold grudges. It looks bad to everyone when you yell to make a point or use negative language like "misdeed".
Please consider how much fun everyone in the community has playing this game. Please give thought to how unneccessary negativity can have an adverse effect on the general spirit of sportsmanship and good will around here. And if you feel the need to make a point, find a way to make it positive.
Keep it mature and gentlemanly, and try to couch your messages in diplomatic language, humor and positive wording while avoiding personal reference or reference to past games. Writing it in role-playing character is also fun and very appropriate for D3 and helps avoid this kind of bad crassness.
This is my last post in this thread. I don't want to add any fuel to a fire that should be allowed to burn out. Picking at the scab is not going to help it to heal over. (Sorry for the mixed metaphors).

Meta-gaming should NEVER be ignored when it comes to these types of games - especially if you play to win. Knowing your opponent and understanding his reasoning/value-system is a key part to any game that revolves around free-flowing diplomacy/negotiations. To ask people to ignore people's past behavior is akin to asking them to play with a handicap.
Me and Frank were just observing the game-theory behind the popular back-stab and evaluating it from a gaming perspective. I don't think either me or Frank are passing judgment on the moral character of anyone here (at least I wasn't) - just pointing out the obvious consequences to performing the act.
Some people do care about oaths/pacts in a game, others don't. Some people will hold grudges, others won't. Some people will make a big fuss about breaking a deal, others won't. Those facts will never change.

Frank. You don't know a thing of what happened and make an oppinion. Just should not.
If I have diplomatic messages going on and my neighbour don't answer them I just assumed he was hostile. The fact that he remembered me and old pact after the attack (wich I am not aware but it´s probably true) made me stop the advance to give him a turn to regroup.
Ganging on a weaker nation is disgusting and I see myself as a balancing factor, and balance is what I like of a game. Otherwise is plain boring.
I could attack him at the beggining of the game when he looked weak but I didn't to let him anjoy the game. I even discouraged Machaka to attack Abysia like he wanted (shmonk). And he can testify that.

i think that when one of your neighbour is attacked and defeated, or looks like he will be defeated soon you have to take as much of him or else the nation who conquered him will come out too strong and will now threaten you. so its not disgusting, but just a necessary strategic move.
btw. i dont understand, why here is so much controversy about backstabbing, its i tactical move, and you dont just gain from it, as when you break a NAP you become an outlaw and a your other neighbours might start fighting you as a preemptive strike.

Your words of contrition fall upon deaf ears, oathbreaker. Your fate is sealed and all know how far the nation of Arcoscephale can be trusted. As your lands burn around you and all men know you for false, you should consider that honoring the agreement you made would have cost you a mere three months. Bleat all you will about how weak the children of the Smoldercone are while your legacy turns to ash for you will get no quarter from us and all know that in future turnings of the wheel the words of Baalz can be trusted. I can not imagine any choosing to bed down in friendship with a serpent known to be poisonous regardless that his forked tongue proclaims how fair and balanced his treachery will be. So I listened to him and started looking at Mictlan instead, like a dummy (slaps forehead "Doh! Coulda had easier prey with Abysia, maybe"). Mictlan must have seen me comin' and launched a pre-emptive attack. Granted, it was not against my capital (as Abysia first claimed, minor mistake there), just an outpost. Learn the true story of Grebeg:
At last, Grebeg, the beautiful, vegetarian lady from Atlantia, stood shivering in front of the giant ice doors of Caelum. She had an urgent message from the careing beloved Godfather to the Lord of Caelum. Bloodthirsty monsters were seen in the ocean, heading to Caelum! The wise and old Godfather, who was called "Granddaddy Seaflowers" couldn't help but send his only daughter to warn the foreign people. He always said: Strangers are just friends you haven't met.
It was a dangerous journey and only her love and her joyous soul kept her alive, as Atlantis was without money, Granddaddy Seaflowers had nothing more to give to his daughter than his trust and love. (All money earned by the Godfather is donated to benevolent causes.)
She knocked at the icy doors and was lead to the Lord of Caelum. "Whaddas you buisness 'ear?" the Seraph barked "cant ya see we planning attack on the beasts o' Pangea? *@#°!$ !!" "My dear lord of Caelum" the maiden answered "Please I have urgent news of my Father, the good Godfather of Atlantis! Monsters are on their way to Caelum! We could help you fight them, but we need 300 gold for the care of the wounded, widows and orphans, because there will surely be injured or even dead Atlantians in the battle." "Mwuah wuah wuah!" the Seraph lauged "Only dead fish smell good. We luv teh smell of rotting fishes as much as of rotting Tien Chi's who we will fight after extinction of animalz of Pangea." "Oh no, my lord," the maiden said with widening eyes, "not the cute and lovely animals in Pangea and not the friendly, hardworking Tien Chi's!" "Oh yes, we love the meat and need the fur of the Pangean beasts to manufacture toiletpaper and furcoats against the cold. And to manufacture these, we need Tien Chi slaves. Mwuah hua hua. Otherwise we couldn't let open our fridges, that's where the cold comes from. Mwuah hua hua." "Oh no, think about the CO2-emissions and the energy-spoilage!" Grebeg shouted with tears in her eyes, "I begin to think that you are not a nice man." "How dare you!!" the Seraph shouted "for that insolence my evil army and I will destroy your temples, pillage your provinces and litter the coastlines with plastic-things from six-packs so all seals, dolphins and other cute animals will suffocate!" After being sexually harrassed by the Seraph, Grebeg was kicked out of the doors and left to herself. Silently crying, she began the long way home, while the evil army of Caelum began to drink all the beer they have robbed so far to gather the plastic-things and to get brave enough to attack the defensless province.
Poor Grebeg, please make her laugh again and donate 1000 gold to Granddaddy Seaflowers, Atlantis.

You can't. An enslaved hero becomes a non-commander during the course of the battle. That means that regardless of whether it lives or dies it won't have any magic items when the battle is complete or its life ends. That means that the chances of anyone getting any of its magic items is zero.
An enslavement cast upon a super combatant is a method of destroying all of its equipment, which is good news if you don't intend to win the battle.

Oh that is so very depressing. The one with no honor has golems so far up my butt I can taste clay, so I oh-so-cleverly empower and equip with penetration items 3 bad *** astral mages with a banner of the northern star scripted to cast opposition X5. Apparently, however, golems are not magic beings! Oh, the humanity! Not much my astral mages could do other than turn into toe jam under his fire/lighting/cold/poison immune lifeless/mindless/non-magical juggernaut. There was however much screaming at the screen until I figured out they weren't just choosing to ignore my scripting....;)
In related news, it seems unlikely at this point that I'll be able to come back against the oathbreaker, he back-stabbed me too good which made a great opportunity for my other two neighbors to engage in a land grab. I do have a couple dozen lightless lanterns, about twenty blood stones, 6 or so clams and a ring of sorcery looking for a good home before I'm eliminated and they will certainly be distributed to anyone who will join common cause against the guy who will be topping the charts once he finishes taking my territories by not honoring his word. Come on, nobody really wants him to win like that, do you?

Atlantis is just a little criminal sitting on the ground of the seas, waiting that one of the bordering nations takes pity to get down to kill him. But the Horselords of Tien Chi are Fighting Rlyeh abominations, and could use any Lightless Lanterns that are left.

The Godfather loves all living creatures and calling the foreign starfolk of R'lyeh "abominations" only because they look a bit different than what a Horselord sees during his days in the plains, is unbearable for us. But we will forgive your unthoughtful words about R'lyeh and ourselves, dear Lord of Tien Chi, because you just don't know better. And we don't want to think what you might have called the noble Abysians, if you had seen them.
And about the topic of getting down and kill me: We are not at war with any of our neighbours, not even with you. We just want to live in peace. Ask Caelum. They now know that and won't enter the oceans again. A friendly talk between a delegation of our Coral Guards and the Lord of Caelum in his capitol was the solution of the misunderstandings some month ago. We are glad to have this matter settled and won't give up the hope to make you understand the good intentions of the Godfather too. We will try hard and send our Coral Guards to revisit your capitol. Aaah sweet memories.

Meglo - I'm not sure if you are aware - but using stealth commanders to sneak non-stealth troops out of a besieged castle is a bug.
From Edi's List: BHV Non-stealthy Units Sneaking Out of Besieged Castles Non-stealthy units can sneak out of besieged castles. Requires stealthy commander. Give commander move orders out of castle and he will sneak. Add non-stealthy units and move orders change from sneak to move, but orders are executed on hosting anyway. Can be used to evacuate sieged castles to friendly nighboring provinces and/or attack neighboring hostile provinces. This seems to be a special case of the above issue.
Perhaps I'm wrong, but it looks like this is what you did to escape the seige of your capital.

Yea, I know, I read the thread but is it a bug or a WAD? Unless its been fixed, I consider it just part of the game mechanics. Also are there any rules against exploiting a bug?

I think I have a problem (bug!?) - for the last couple of turns, one of my castles does NOT produce any units - I wonder why. The production is set, there are no hostile units, there are plenty production points.... What is making me upset, that this is the castle closest to the frontline.... Have you had any similar problems before?

It specifically says in the rulebook that non-stealth troops cannot sneak with sneaking commanders. The GUI itself tells you that you are moving - not sneaking. Edi runs the official bug list and its on there. I'm not sure how you rationalize it not being a bug.
It's generally assumed to be at the minimum poor form at the worst cheating to exploit a bug.
With your bug exploit you stopped me from reinforcing or retreating with my main force with lead to the total collapse of my primary army.
Frankly - that's not cool or clever.

Well, the past 6 turns or so I have just been doing my 'duty' to the other players by fighting to the death. I cannot withstand your excellent master enslave strategy and your timing of your attack on Agartha was perfect. In order to balance out any damage I caused you by my use of the move/sneak bug I have set Agartha to AI, giving you a easy time conquering my remaining provinces.

As we complete turn 60 I've had a couple people tell me it is taking them along time to do their turns and I can sympathize (and sometimes relate).
So when we reach turn 70 (10 turns from now) we are going to move to a 72 hour turn clock. Hopefully most people can still complete their turns within 48 hours, but I want to give those people that are running a large empire time to manage their affairs properly.
For those who think 72 hours slow, take solace in that I might be starting up a new game soon! http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/happy.gif

I've gone to computer control. I think someone has been hacking my turn since key commands haven't been happening (I don't have a password on my turn, which was a noob mistake since this is my first MP game). Since I'm losing to the combined might of Arco and the rescued Machaka anyway, this kind of thing wasn't even necessary.

Foul Vapors? it was against the elemental that she killed.
K
April 28th, 2007, 10:22 PM
Actually, the issue that made me notice the hack was that several mages with their troops had been given orders to break siege at the same time and join that battle, and for some reason their orders had been changed. This isn't the first time in this particular game that I've given troops orders only to have different moves be made, things I wasn't even considering (and I'm not talking about battlefield scripting, which we all know is dynamic).
I'm not pointing any fingers or making any accusations, but I am bowing out.
