is there a good way to test minefields in the simulator? Just trying to figure out how many mines I need in a field.

A simple answer to your question is to lay as many mines as you can per each field. It only takes one or two high tech mine sweepers to clear a large field so the more you have the greater the chance of taking out an enemy ship.

What is allot of mines? 100, 1000, 10,000?

And do mines require a warhead, or do they just add power?

Mines do require a warhead I believe.

They don't require them to build a mine, which is why I am a bit confused.

Mines 'ram' the opponent, and thus need structure. Just a bit of structure in itself won't do damage, which is where the warheads come in.
Of course... mines with no warheads do take less time to build... possibly use mine duds to mess with minesweepers, and in multiplayer games(and the rare mod with visible mines)freak the heck out of people when they see you have mines all over the place.

I just wanted to check, but with Minesweepers do you have to actively use them? Like give them a sweep order to do so?
If that's the case then how would the opponent ever get by mines if you always put them on the far side of wormholes.

Another Mine question, Is there a limit to the amount of mines allowed in 1 sector?
I ask because my fleet could sweep 110 mines, but I got damaged heading thru the warp point anyway. se5a?

In stock the limit is 100 per hex.

Mine fields are evil. Avoid them. Be wary of any empire that deploys them while holding a peace treaty with you! You might just wake up one day with your homeworld surrounded by mines and your former ally demanding your unconditional surrender. Followed soon afterward by your death, and public display of your severed head on a pole outside of your former palace.

A minesweeping ship will automatically sweep mines when it enters a sector. You don't have to give it an order to sweep mines.

You just run them into the minefield and they sweep automatically..
