I'd like to modify some sprites for my mod, but can't get the "paint" files to be in .tga format.

If you're using the Paint program that comes with Windows, that one doesn't recognize targa bitmaps. You need to use some other, more powerful program.

I use GIMP, which is free, don't know what others prefer.

I use Paint Shop Pro.

If you want to do some more comlicated graphical editing and do it fast (colour swaps, retouching etc) then you need something fairly powerful like PSP even for little Dom3 sprites anyway.

IrfanView (already mentioned) is a great converter.

I would add my favorite paint programs here (I have most of those listed already)and Id add paint.net (thats the name of the program, its a free clone of fancier paints) BUT since you didnt ask that I will just say IrfanView is your best answer.
