View Full Version : Map A Map List

Ballbarian
April 14th, 2007, 11:01 AM
I started to compile a simple list of links to map threads some time ago, but never finished it. A recent post reminded me that it might be useful to share. Maybe it will help someone compile a sticky-worthy reference similar to the mod list.

1/2/08:
Zylithan has created a great website for collecting & providing feedback on maps at dom3maps.wikidot.com (http://dom3maps.wikidot.com/)
Be sure to check it out. If you see a map that deserves a review, <font color="blue">review it</font>! If your favorite map is missing from the list, <font color="blue">add it</font>!

ah, thats cause people arn't as sick of playing the same nations are they are as sick of playing the same map, over and over and over again :p

Sombre
April 15th, 2007, 10:55 AM
That's actually a damn good point. Dom3 has such variety in terms of nations that people aren't actually that excited to get new ones to play. If this was some other strat game and there were so many mod nations available people'd be doing backflips.

Mm, in Dom 2 I liked mods a lot more, except that they replaced nations, other than it was so exciting!
But now! it's like, hey look, "another" nation joy, I often find myself thinking, "you know this mod is alright, but I'm probably not going to leave on cause it kinda doesn't fit into the dominions scene." But that doesn't mean we should stop making mods! mods are great!

I'm very excited by quite a few of the new nation mods actually - but it's true, I just haven't got around to playing them yet, what with all the vanilla nations. For example, I discovered Machaka yesterday - I just never noticed them before!

I'd be quite keen to start a LA MP game using some of the more balanced new-nation mods soonish though.

Maybe because your link on Dom3minions.com is broken, and there aren't any of your maps in this forum? If you have any good Dom3 version maps, I'd try them out.

Well I meant in the Dom2 days. My favorite maps and mods never seemed to get listed in the official lists. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/happy.gif

Sorry about that link. I didnt actually do those pages. I should start working on that stuff. And setting up the daily updates so that the maps dir like I had for Dom2
Dom2 Random Maps (http://www.dom2minions.com/~dominion/Dominions2/RandomMaps/RandomMaps.html)
will be active again with Dom3 versions.

For now, I do have the Battle Sim
Battle Simulator map (http://www.dom3minions.com/docs/Mini_v3.zip)

And a Dom3 version of my popular Dom2 map altho I dont have it re-randomizing a daily version yet.
Poke in the Eye map (http://www.dom3minions.com/RandomMaps/Poke_Eye_v3.zip)

So far only one other chaotic craziness map and it has 1500 provinces. It crashes some peoples machines and takes so long to create a game that some people think its crashed. Thats why I shifted my attentions to the programs which modify the maps with pre-written provinces.
MegaMap zip (http://www.dom3minions.com/RandomMaps/MegaMap.zip)

I have one mod, just as crazy. It puts all of the nations into early era so you can play them in one game. It goes great with that 1500 province map.
Single Age mod (http://www.dom3minions.com/RandomMaps/SingleAge.zip)

I have one minor utility thing. A SaveGames .lnk file for Windows.
SaveGames link for Windows (http://www.dom3minions.com/docs/SavingSavedGames.zip)

Other than the daily randomizing maps and such, I also might do something to update one of my favorite mods from Dom2 days. Its kindof the opposite of the balance mod. Unless someone else does it first.
It can be found here...
Randomize Units mod (http://home.online.no/~rmoldskr/Dominions/)

Id also like to see some Dom3 versions of some strange chaoticized Dom2 maps...
Orania the Nasty Edition map (http://pi2r.homepage.dk/dominions2/scenarios/oraniane_1_0.zip)
Miirunst Extreme map (http://www.dom2minions.com/MiirunstX.shtml)

I might even get around to changing the old DomMap generator abit
Dominions 2 Map Generator project (http://www.dom2minions.com/dommap.shtml)
and various other old Dom2 projects if I cant get someone else to do them better.

ah, thats cause people arn't as sick of playing the same nations are they are as sick of playing the same map, over and over and over again :p

I feel guilty. I started playing Dom3 out of the bag with the Early Era vanilla nations and have just recently started playing Middle Era games. Once I have become familiar with all of the vanilla nations I know that I will be all over the mod nations like stink on stuff. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/wink.gif

Somehow I never make these lists.

Gandalf, I am so sorry. I thought of your many maps and projects, but when I compiled this map list my intention was to link to non dom3 generated maps with different graphical content. I am glad that you posted your list and details. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/happy.gif

No prob. Its not new. I know that my stuff doesnt categorize well.

All of my projects for Dom2 never seemed to get mentioned on sites or lists either. Especially the Illwinter site. My penchant for chaotic randoms tends to stand alone. Thats why the Dom2minions.com site provided space to mention all of the randoms, randomizer, mapgen projects that I or other people did.

Say.. there aren't any sixty-ish maps are there?
I can find maps for 2-4 players (45 provinces on land), and provinces with a recommended minimum six players (Aran, 96 land), but I'm having trouble finding a designed multiplayer map for the middle ground, comfortable for 4 to 7 players, perhaps. 60 to 80ish?

Thanks in advance.

Infinite Sands (http://forum.shrapnelgames.com//showthread.php?t=36063)
Put lots of work into this... the screenshot below really doesnt show off the beauty of the map zoomed in.

It's a desert map, so supply is low, and a few oasis provinces are worth much more than a number of sandy wastes, which could change some tactics.

"The Eight Gates"

STORY
-----------
While the Pantokrator ruled, there was relative peace in the world. Skirmishes would break out from time to time, but not major wars. The people were united under one god. Since his sudden dissappearance, the world has turned to Chaos. The various peoples of the world have each rallied under their local deities and are fighting for primacy. Even the world itself is being torn apart - rifts have opened up in the fabric of the world, swallowing land and lake alike into voids of nothingness. In the wake of this chaos, eight flavors of magical gates, previously only accessible to the Pantokrator and his highest servants, have opened up across the land. Any common man can travel the gates, crossing huge areas of land in a short time - but sometimes there is a horrible price for travelling the Gates.

With the people warring and the world itself in destruction, one supreme god must rise to power, to calm the world and to rule the heavens. Will it be you?

DETAILS
----------------------------------------------------------
Roughly 230 provinces, 10 water, rest land. Not wrap-around, but efforts have been made to reduce/eliminate the advantages of edges and corners. Start locations are not set, but are restricted to a set of provinces all of which are roughly balanced. A water player is allowed, but would likely be at a serious disadvantage.

The map has a lot of chokepoints, and a fairly low number of average neighbors. This is countered by The Eight Gates - a means of teleporting across the world. This means that despite the low average connectivity, there is no/little chance of getting boxed in because of myriad options for expansion/attack.

Preview of (a small part of) the overland map (without province borders). It's a swampy area with 4 flavors of gates visible. Clockwise from top left: water, life, blood (the pool of blood at the bottom), astral. The blood gates look different from the other 7 flavors of gate because blood magic is different from the 7 other types of magic in dom3.

I never said the real world is perfect, but anyone who's played on the listed world map knows a specific section of the map is 'seriously' unbalanced. It's not a small amount of unbalance it's a significant noticeable amount.

It's a good thing some countries don't do wars like they were done 100+ years ago... loot, rape, pillage, and kill everything not on your side. BTW... you should stop invading others.

Gang wars 1.00

The Story:

"You are a stranger in town, a strong, evil stranger and you want power, LOTS of power. The cityguard could be a way.. a LONG, SLOW way to power, and long and slow just isn't like you. The King isn't going to give you his power either, and you hate him for it already, ow yeah, he'll pay too. And religion.. is not the thing for you, except to be worshipped by your minions as they spread your gangs dominion over the city. Take the power you deserve. And the money. And the lives you need to take to get whatever else you want.TO PLAY THIS GAME:
1. create at least 4 nations
2. use The King, The Church and The Nobility as 3 of those and set them to computer controlled, do not choose The City Guard as a nation.
3. Create a slot for your own nation, set it on human.
4. If you want other gangs competing for power in the city create a maximum of 4 other nations.
5. Use an awake pretender (and some combat qualities might be usefull) as your gangleader carving your name in the annals of the city"
--
All water-nations, MA/LA Ermor and MA Tien Chi are disabled. The nations which are used as the resident powers in the city are MA Pythium/Man/Ulm and Marignon and are thus not playable either.

The Map:
the map looks like this: see first post

The map is out NOW!! please play it

The general idea behind the map:
You arrive in a city and start to creat a gang (nation) to take it over. The King in his castle obviously has troops too, as do the Church and the Nobility 2 powers already in the city, fighting for control within the city walls. On the gates the City Guard is posting and preventing scum like gangs like yours to enter the city. Obviously the city guard is at peace with everyone... as long as gangs don't try to cross the gates.

--&gt; The map will be is campaign/RP sort of map with a lot of pre-made quarters where specific people live (and fight to prevent you taking it over).
--&gt; You and (if you want) some opposing gangs start outside the walls, to cross the gate means fighting the guards. To cross the gates also means entering the domain of the Church and the Nobility.
--&gt; The king resides in the castle and is happy enough to stay there if undisturbed, but of course.. to be the boss of all means the king cannot be allowed to live. And who doesn't want to live in his nice castle
--&gt; There is a victory point in the Kings castle so playing for VP or cumulative VP is an option too. Personally I think playing for 10-15 cumulative VP would make the end game a nice "King of the Hill" play.

The new file is attached to this post, DL, play and enjoy

This is a map request, not exactly part of a map list.

My son and I would like to work on an SCA mod where the 17 North American SCA kingdoms would duke it out (so to speak) in D3 and possibly add the 2 non-North American kingdoms once we figure out how to get them in. However, neither one of us are terribly competent graphic artists.

What I would like is a Dominions-style map of North America of relatively large size running roughly from the Arctic Circle in the north to the US-Mexican border in the south. The Caribbean islands are not necessary but adding Hawaii would be a nice touch (not necessarily to scale). The provinces do not have to be created. We will do that based on SCA geography and resources. The final map should probably scaled sufficiently sized to be in the 500-750 province range when completed. Another version which has Europe, Australia and New Zealand added (but necessarily out of scale) would be welcome however we want to see if the concept works with the North American region.

Obviously, once we work on the mod we will post it so that it is available to all. It is our way of getting more of the medieval reenactment community involved in this game in a fun and unusual way.

Thanks in advance for the help.

Thanks for the help but it isn't quite what I'm looking for. A map done from a satellite image would look pretty bad for what we're trying to do. Also the map has the problems of too much Mexico and Caribbean and not enough Canada/Alaska which would cause gameplay problems with what we're going for. We're going for a medieval feel and also one that encompasses the geographic areas of the Society. When I create the provinces they will reflect the naming conventions, resources and population of the Society.

Something like the maps Jason Lutes did would be wondrous or even just in the style of the stock random maps in the game.

Thanks a lot for the help anyway.

Finding a satellite-based image that would make a good map, adding white dots for province centers and releasing an early version of your scenario would help a lot, IMHO. If someone likes your initial scenario, they might help you finish it, and if they already know what you'd like to have for geography, they'll have easier time making something you're happy with.

I think it would be relatively easy (== hard, but doable) to re-paint that into a map with spesific style. In fact, I think the mountain, forest etc icons used by the random maps have been released IIRC, so it might be possible to even do it yourself - any graphic program with layers would let you have the satellite image in one layer, and then you just paste the mountain icons on top of the mountains, trees on top of the forests etc, then put the beige ground color between the icons and the satellite image.

You might also want to look for antique maps of Northern America. This site would be a good start:

Unless they're over the size limit, the most straightforward way is to do as most of the others in this list have done and put them in a zip archive and post them directly in a new thread in this maps/mods subforum (using the file attachments feature.)

Thanks. I can do that. I just need to work out one little thing first - one map has a small island surrounded by sea that I want as a possible start site. I can't get the Province Editor to work (& I downloaded the visual basic per the readme.) I can almost figure out the code to modify a couple provinces manually, but there's still a lot of guessing. I can make a "known feature" site that allows the recruitment of amphibians, so the start wouldn't be completely isolated (If I can figure out which site does that), or I can play around with it until I can figure out how to make some amphibs recruitable naturally in a neighboring province.

(I'm proud of the appearance of the maps, but I depend on Semi-Random to add the flavor to it. But my problem requires order in this case, and not chaos.)

Islandwrap
&
Long Stretch

These are both small wrap-around maps with a long stripe of land surrounded by an equal part water. The water provinces are larger, though, so the land/sea balance is on par with the norm. You'll want to run these through Semi-Random, as I did very little tweaking of the provinces manually other than the appearance of the map.

Those are some nice looking maps wilphart, thanks for sharing them :)

Although think both of them might have too many water provinces (or too high of a land:water ratio) to be used that often in MP games, unless they were specialised Land v Water games or some such. Since playing water natons in MP games is not that popular. Shame, as IMO both of your maps are friendlier on the eyes than most regular maps.

Wasnt there, at somepoint, a map project from devs, or either one of them, titled something like "the map that will never be"?`

Whats up with that?

There's a map list on the wiki too, can the link be added to the OP?
